>USS Gambier Bay about to be sunk by the yamato How could ww2 generals use battleship more effectively?
Turn them int scrap metal for aircraft carriers, destroyers and submarines.
>>65197035They couldn’t really. A lot of Leyte actions were effectively suicide plays on Japan’s part. The battleships weren’t used much earlier because it was known they weren’t likely to make a return journey. Hiei and Kirishima were used for bombardment missions it was thought they could survive but did not come back. The Yamatos weren’t sent down the slot for lack of speed and fuel oil. It was thought air power would get them on their return trip. Battleships weren’t used much most useful when planes weren’t around, but that rarely happened so they were rarely able to be used for anything, and that dynamic of being both to valuable and too vulnerable to risk easily extended to every major power.
Even with the Yamato's large rangefinder, they mistook the smoke screen released by Gambier Bay for a direct hit.
Fast Battleships for bullying softer targets, then more carrier fleets for strategic dominance.
>>65197035You're not curious about what the admirals could have done better?
>>65197197>Generals>WW2>Japs>famous for the IJA v. IJN disputesLet him cook
>>65197035Leyte gulf is a nice example, use a decoy to distract your enemy and sneak in with the battleships to melee range. it's a risky gambit with a lot of quirks and requires luck and boldness, though.
>>65197197Let him cook. I bet the IJA wouldn't have withdrawn prematurely from engaging Taffy 3.
>>65198359an IJA commander would've straight up ordered a boarding attack on the closest enemy ship
>>65197035Yamato didn't hit anything.
>>65199141Then what sank the CVE's that went down?
>>65199141one of her main gun shells literally split a destroyer in half
>>65199709Other ships. Duh.>>65200398Possible, not likely.
>>65197090I really like this picture.
>>65197078>Hiei and Kirishima were used for bombardment missions it was thought they could survive but did not come back.Kirishima ran into two battleships. The other two ships of the class, Kongō and Haruna, managed to successfully bombard Henderson field.

>>65199709The only ship sunk by gunfire was Bay , the other was sank by a Kamikaze. >>65199141Later Historical records does say that Yamato's primary battery is what crippled bay and at least one of her secondary batteries took out Hoel.
