We'd also check for any mold before filling and we'd make sure the containers were dry before storing them. We (meaning myself, the big booty latina SPC under me, and our Warrant Officer) took sanitation very seriously. If the company was to get sick due to a food/water borne illnes we could catch an Article and a bad NCOER and it would fuck up our warrants' career progression.

Technically on paper they are supposed to. It actually happening in the real world is another matter, but usually no. Regardless if you are drinking from them you usually don't really have better options so might as well not think about things outside of your control.
