Maybe I'm retarded here but how the hell do eForm 1s work? Am I supposed to eventually get an approved/rejected email? Every YouTube tutorial was at least like 12mo outdated and the site had changed at least 2-3 times since IIRC.Previous(?): >>64955436
>>65201390After you submit your eForm, it will be shuttled to your in progress tab in your eForms account. You will receive an email from NFA Branch (the email will be from eforms.notifications) that your application is Submitted and you will receive your permit/control number.>now you wait You will receive an email regarding your Application Status Change for that permit/control number, whether you were approved, approved with conditions, or denied. If you are approved with conditions, those will be contextualized in your form with your electronic stamp. If you are denied, you will receive an explanation about why you were denied so you can resubmit. It is important that you check your emails, because sometimes you will receive an email from an NFA examiner about something missing in your submission. For example, one NFA examiner in particular, named Carol, is known for being very polite and allowing you to submit corrected documentation instead of outright denying you. She has emailed me before to fix something in my submission for an SBR Form 1. She is very nice to speak with.
>>65201411Luv me Carol.
>>65201426Didn't she retire?
>>65201411>For example, one NFA examiner in particular, named Carol, is known for being very polite and allowing you to submit corrected documentation instead of outright denying you.God bless that woman, I fucked up SBRing my MP5 back in '19 and she helped me get everything sorted in about five minutes.
>>65201411>one NFA examiner in particularStore tiem>be me, doing stuff with Gemtech,>the Doc Dater / Kel / Greg Latka days>the NFA examiners were in DC>one NFA examiner was infamous>Lucretia Fountain (?, probably have the name wrong)>she liked to start her desk clean every Monday>so she would shred unprocessed paperwork Friday afternoon>over dinner at one of Dan Shea's Small Arms Review shows folks finally figured it out>so an 07 Manuf (like Gemtech) would time sending their forms to arrive in DC Monday or TuesdayNFA used to really, really, really suck. The key was moving NFA Branch and the examiners beyond the reach of the DC Metro.
>>65201435I had heard something like that, but I know there was a really big push for the examiners to anonymize themselves. I have only spoken to 2 examiners. One being Carol, probably the most famous examiner, and the other was an actual ATF agent "on loan" to the NFA branch. That was a really weird one, he called me on his personal cell to discuss my form. I thought it was total BS before he gave me his ATF Gov email to confirm and he literally read me the info from my Eforms account. Was a really nice guy and moved my Form 1 right along after fixing something with my submission.
>>65201459My experience with her was I was Form 1 SBRing my Griffin Armament 300 blk and I didn't catch that my wife didn't sign her RPQ. After she signed and I scanned and uploaded, it was fixed within 30 minutes.May God bless that woman and her patience.
>>65201411Oh shit, I didn't see that until now. Thanks anon. My browser absolutely fucked the formatting and the search section had been jumbled into an unreadable unrecognizable mess. Fixed it now, and I can confirm it's created and submitted. I got my eMail a while ago and just didn't know how to check up on it. Literally had to just read the login page to find out that same info so IDK how it didn't hit me before that I was missing something.
>>65201461I've heard some fucked up stories from my SOT about the absolute clusterfuck it was dealing with the DC crew. This is a distant hand account (Me -> my FFL -> his ATF rep witnessing), but there was an examiner's office that was from the floor to the top of their desk with paper copy forms, with the only "available" floorspace being from the door to their chair at the desk. The examiner said their "goal" for the day was to get a stack done (like 4 physical feet of paperwork), but for every 1 stack they get done, 3 more arrive and were assigned. The agent lamented it was a sisyphian task and they would leave the office with more paperwork than when they arrived, regardless how long they spent in the office. The one good thing they said was that when there was that much paperwork, they got OT, so examiners were spending like 16 hours in the office and banging them out, which is why sometimes a couple years ago you would get random approvals at no shit 3am. The weirdest approval that I ever got was at 4:30am, i swear that examiner was in in his pajamas looking at my form 1
>>65201486That's okay anon, I'm glad I could help. My advice is that any time you sign in to a .gov website, disable any and all ad/popup blockers, you will totally fuck with their formatting. I know it might take a while for everything to get approved, but it is important to keep in mind that the biggest choke point for your forms to be confirmed is not actually the ATF but the FBI and your fingerprints. Please don't email or call the ATF asking where your order is in the queue. It takes a while (now that they're free, my fastest form 1 was 36 hours, my slowest was 2 weeks).
>>65201390Something interesting related to this thread: The ATF is also considering dropping marking requirements on certain guns, say factory marked firearms with all their info on them. So no more [your name], [your address] laser engravings on most Form 1'd guns, maybe?>1140-AA70: Allowing Makers to Adopt Certain Markings for National Firearms Act - NPRM>ATF is proposing to allow individuals who make National Firearms Act (NFA) firearms by altering existing firearms to adopt markings already applied by the original manufacturer rather than applying additional, redundant markings. Because the original importer and manufacturer’s serial number and markings are already required by statute and regulation, this proposal eliminates a duplicative regulatory requirement while ensuring NFA marking requirements are satisfied. ATF has previously accommodated this practice through individual variances; this proposed rule codifies that accommodation into regulation to provide consistent, clear guidance across the industry.https://www.atf.gov/rules-and-regulations/atf-launches-new-era-reform/clarify#17PNo clue when the comment period is.
>>65201496>Please don't email or call the ATF asking where your order is in the queue. It takes a while (now that they're free, my fastest form 1 was 36 hours, my slowest was 2 weeks).Couldn't even if I wanted to. From their eForm login page:>Status updates will not be provided by phone or email for any forms submitted in 2026 unless they have been pending for more than 60-days; however, users can log into eForms and utilize the search bars (preferably using the eForms ID or internal control number) to see the current status of an application submitted through eForms.I've waited much longer on form 4s anyways so anything under 2 months feels like a blessing! I've just never form 1'd before so I'm used to getting my notification from my LGS and am completely clueless how to use eForms otherwise.
>>65201507The laser engraving isn't that much of a pain in the balls as long as you put it in a not annoying spot. The guy I use puts it on the lower inside the trigger guard. Pic rel for reference
>>65201525Oh cool, then you're no stranger to the wait. The best part about doing Form 1s is that you aren't waiting around for your FFL to call you to say pick it up, you're notified immediately that you're good to go. What's your project that finally convinced you to foray in to Form 1?
>>65201527All depends on the gun and finish IMO. ARs and AKs, maybe MP5s already have had every location possible experimented on. I have some I can only think of one or two locations to engrave and whether they have a rail installed changes where I can and can't mark them. I have some coated or painted guns that I know would need to be re-touched to prevent the factory finish from peeling after engraving too, so this could be huge if I want to Form 1 them.
>>65201488>I've heard some fucked up stories from my SOT about the absolute clusterfuck it was dealing with the DC crew. The first big step towards making NFA less of a cocksmack was relocating that branch to WV. Truly an overlooked part of the overall process of easing the burden.
>>65201531>What's your project that finally convinced you to foray in to Form 1?SBRing a rifle I love. Pin and weld just ain't the same! Cleaning sucks. The added length sucks. My gunsmith that did the job sucked and I couldn't be sure of my accuracy anymore. That was a $200 mistake lol.
>>65201550So when you do a Form 1, there is a law enforcement agency portion of your paperwork. Now, keep in mind, years ago the ATF changed this requirement to a "notification only" system, where you DO NOT have to submit evidence you submitted anything. You can choose your: chief of police, elected sheriff, state police colonel, or your attorney general of the state you reside to mail these documents.Or your notification form can get "lost in the mail".Obviously I do not, under any circumstance, recommend this final option. It would be against the law. But it would save you the money for a post office stamp.
I wonder if Capitol Armory will branch out into home delivered firearms if/when the ATF starts allowing them.I hope not. My wallet will never recover.
>>65201507>>65201527this is honestly the biggest hurdle. Also what rules are they dropping?
>>65201562>Obviously I do not, under any circumstance, recommend this final option. It would be against the law. But it would save you the money for a post office stamp.Eh, I think it's stupid to take the risk over something so minor, but also I thought about it the first time and I actually want my state attorney general to constantly get reminded that lots of voters are getting this stuff and are therefore likely to care about it. I feel like it's a good passive way to quietly help make sure they'll always have second thoughts about fucking with it, even though in my state that seems very unlikely.
>>65203020A couple things are changing or have changed. Unironically check YT and watch some Washington Law or someone who isn't that Armed Scholar guy who just uploads "ATF LITERALLY DESTROYED" clickbait over and over. I'm sure there's some I'm missing but:>1140-AA96: Importing Dual-Use Frames, Receivers, or Barrels - NPRMNo more MG barrel import ban, we've been able to import AK, G3, etc. barrels again. "Dual use" receiver part may make this even more interesting IIRC.>1140-AA97: Importing Training Rounds - NPRMNot quite as exciting but IIRC this greatly opens options for cheap training ammo like that blue plastic 7.62x51? There's been more coming up but that page doesn't seem to show all I can vaguely remember hearing about.
>>65203020They are flirting with the idea (not set in stone yet, they opened it up to Administrative comments) to get rid of the engraving requirement on Form 1 SBRs. Which makes sense, because when they were doing the pistol brace amnesty program, for as shortlived as it was, they didn't require it. So basically, you have a ton of SBRs that are engraved and a ton that are not engraved floating around in the wild.>>65203041Every time I see that guy I get pissed off, I don't know why
>>65203036I agree, but to play devil's advocate, there is not way for them (ATF) to confirm. I try to go to my PD and I try to give the chief the papers, his secretary takes them, says "we have been notified" and shreds them at her desk with me standing there.
>>65203020>removing CLEO notification, 2025R-15Pyoutube.com/watch?v=uxrj11qrIhM>repeal pistol brace rule, repeal NFA transport requirements, remove some import restricted countries from the restricted list, and some other rules that may or may not be interesting to youyoutube.com/watch?v=9LBKDFqB-5g
>>65203052>I agree, but to play devil's advocate, there is not way for them (ATF) to confirm.Of course there CAN be. Sure, in some cases it may just get shredded, but police/AGs are not required to shred them by law, and remember anon a lot of people may live in places where there are sticklers for rules or paper filing, or where they're more grabber and like to keep stuff just in case they can use it. You rarely know for certain. And even if it gets shredded doesn't mean there was no record made of it being delivered right? It'd be easy to have an excel sheet of "received copy of form 1 for John Doe on July 1" over and over. Or run it through a scanner before the shredder. Finally, don't forget that things change from time to time at the top too. Imagine some hyper proggie manages to get elected a decade down the line, and they direct their new people at the ATF to once again crack down on any violations they can no matter how small. Some states might fight being asked to turn over records but they'd probably lose, and other states would be happy to just comply. At that point comparing two databases is trivial.I mean, I'm no stickler for all the rules all the time at all, but somethings have such a low cost (1 postage stamp) vs even a tiny risk that dunno, doesn't feel worthwhile to fuck with. Maybe if I was 50 years older and could reasonably go "who fucking cares what happens in a decade" lol.
>>65203076Based even better. If it's just officially had the rules changed we don't even need to think about it anymore.
When should we know about the change to the engraving rules? It looks like the comment period is until July 6, 2026. I might just go ahead and get mine engraved so Ican go ahead and convert mine if its going to be next year or something
>>65201411Based Carol is /ourgirl/
