Pentomic divisions were a PR stunt. Every new general likes to reorganize the ToE and claim it's to fit a new paradigm in warfare. The pentomic division was particularly egregious though, as it made no sense and clearly didn't fit its stated mission of enhancing resilience in the face of nuclear war.

Cant you elaborate on this? Small nukes were entirely possible in the 60s (the davy crocket was a decade old), so I guess youre referring to the personal gear, which apart from the rocket pack was entirely possible as well. The comms would have been the size of a cereal box, the NODs would have required a separate battery (PNW57s had just been adopted, very similar form factor to the pentomic goggles), as would the rifle scope, but as far as I can see it was all plausible within the time frame

Pentomic divisions were based on nukes, if nukes are good for wars we should be more in line with the pentomic army than the WW2 army with frontlines, logistics chains and all. Looking at CBRN capabilities of militaries in general, they seem to be somewhat prepared but honestly lacking for an actual all out war desu.
If the pentomic divisions actually got their core weapon of widely available tactical nukes like the davy crockett and widespread radios on an individual level, they would have likely been actually viable in the atomic battlefield even without the novel concepts like the foxhole diggers, jetpacks, armour or NV and the biological weapons in tow with the concept would funnel resources into protective equipment. There's a chance you would have portable radiation guns to disinfect points of interest from bioweapons and to a lesser degree

However this weapon was something else, the ruskies didn't die or get sick, i mean physically sick, they got em in the brains, poor bastards.

Whenever the bomb was detonated and a cloud of thin smoke contacted them, nothing happened at first, then their clothes started melting, then they curled up to ball and started convulsing, only to get back up, half molten clothing and all and started attacking each other, they didn't seem to want to kill though, far worse, they were trying to rape each other with every bit of strength. We watched them for a bit but they ultimately found it fruitless to attack each other as every one of them was as deranged as the other, they started forming groups in their crazed mental state and started hunting, a few of the locals were caught by them, only to be brutualized,horrifyingly starting from the men. You could smell and hear them, burning, flesh and screams of frustration. We met up with some of the remaining forces in the area and started trying to contact command. Reports came in of the other weapons used, men bleeding, defecating and convulsing to death on both sides. Genetic immunities, vulnurabilities. Differing levels of necessary protection, all on top of the incoming nuclear fallout and the casualties incurred by the nukes themselves. We had couple stragglers meet up with us, an Lt and an engineer from Heilbronn base to note. After command was throughly nuked and any semblence of the war had broken down to local fighting, we decided not to sit around for fallout and head south for concrete buildings and ultimately, hopefully, reach somewhere less polluted like the alps. Lt. got lost on the way, despite no hostile contacts, we found him dead in a commie den, poor guy went out from shock, probably the reason for no hostile contacts. The engineer, after seeing Heilbronn and probably his family alongside it in ruins, took the easy way out with some explosives and a hell of a lot of dead commies.

I thought about adding a point on the end about the alps being contaminated due to being a rain barrier but decided against it as i don't really know if that would be the case. Also thoguht about a DDR tank crew being used for a ride since the US troops would have immunity bar slavic descent and the DDR fags would have a good ride with the US divisions lack of motorization since they would rely on helis a lot more. The premise is
