Were Stone Age Aztec weapons any match for conquistadors?I remember reading claims that their stone club swords could decapitate horses, and their cotton armour could withstand blades.

>>65218535Anon obviously not. They lost.
>>65218535their obsidian blades were devastating but would shatter against steel. so they targeted the Spaniards' unarmored legs
>>65218535Obsidian is sharp as a motherfucker, and while it does shatter when hitting bone, I could definitely see a lucky swing hitting between the vertebrae taking off a horse's headAs for the armor, textile can definitely stop a slash, the Aztec design was effectively a gambeson
>>65218535The Aztec weren't stonage but they focused on gay weak luxury metals like gold and bronze due to ancient globohomo pochtec influence. Even the Maya were up to their duplicitous nature and often had them taxed into slavery or just killed.

>>65218535The Conquistadors won by forming alliances with native tribes who hated the Aztecs. Most of the fighting were done by the natives vs natives. Also, the Conquistadors semi-inadvertantly spread smallpox to the natives, who without natural immunity, had 90% (NINETY PERCENT) fatality rate. The natives had their revenge by giving syphylis in return, which was the era's AIDS.
historically the Aztecs sort of raised a slave revolt against the already crumbling aztec empire. Contextually the aztecs were being attacked by giants, ghosts, lighting throwing wizards, thousands of them were getting sick and falling down dead, they had no idea how to kill the giant flying lighting throwing dog, arrows didn't really seem to work.Tactically, the aztecs lacked anti cavalry weapons, and kind of metal armor, even if if were one group of spanish fighting another with native weapons, low poundage bows weren't going to work, a spear is not a pike, palisades will not stop an arquebus. nowhere to run, hide, can't win with a direct assault.

>>65218557Anon you know they had leg armor, right? Full plate was still in use.
>>65219110Basically none of them had full armor, anon. Cortez was fielding an army of adventurers, not a force of hardened regular infantry.Even then, leg armor wasn't very common among regular Infantry to begin with, a d any they had was likely discarded by anyone who wasn't mounted, because leg armor sucks when you're marching on a good day, a d would be murderously tiring to deal with in that environment. You'd need to substantially up your water intake just to keep pace, and it WILL tire you the fuck out, especially when you're, say, trying to get the fuck away from tenochitlan after shit went south.
>>65219110None of them wore full pl8. That would be a death sentence for Yuro in a foreign equatorial jungle. Plus, most Conquistadors were not rich, especially the rank and file. They were men who left the continent because they were willing to risk their unsatisfactory lives for a chance at gold and glory.
If you want a good book about what the experience was like for the Spanish read "Discovery and Conquest of Mexico 1517-1521". The common narrative, espoused by poltards and the like, that the Spanish came in like gods and started destroying everyone with ease is far from the truth. They only got through the whole ordeal by the skin of their teeth, and had things gone slightly different, and had they been slightly less lucky, they would have all perished and we'd be living in an alternate timeline.

Mesoamerica anon here, were there an posts in the last Conquistador vs Indigenous thread (desuarchive.org/k/thread/65139782/) that I never got around to replying to that people want me to answer, debunk, or clarify on?>>652185351st that image is inaccurate AI slop. Aztec women did not dress that scantily, mostly didn't wear their hair like that, and the pyramid in the background is mashed together Maya temples and are in ruins. There should be a whole city there and the stonework should be covered in smooth plaster and painted murals (see pic), not foliage2nd, the Aztec and other Mesoamericans at the time were not "stone age", for multiple reasons:A: Mesoamerica had analogs to Eurasian early stone ages and the Neolithic: Respectively, the Mesoamerican Lithic/Paleo Indian (when humans arrived to ~8000BC), and the Mesoamerican Archaic period (~8000 to ~2000BC). Spanish contact was an additional 3500 years and 3 major periods after this, with a lot of technological and social innovations across that time spanB: The Mesoamericans had Bronze metallurgy and used it for some tools and weapons, so even under the highly arbitrary and incorrect Stone/Bronze/Iron age schema, the Mesoamericans were at least "Bronze Age"I stress though that the "___ age" system is dumb: They were just ways for 19th century museums to sort their artifact collections from Europe and the Near East before they had proper dating methods, it was never intended to be a set of stages all societies progress through linearlyThe Mesoamericans are a great example of why using that way is dumb, as as say Teotihuacan (pic) rivaled large Roman cities of the time and (probably, if you into Mesopotamian urbanism, tell me so I can send details and confirm) dwarfed the largest cities in Bronze age Eurasia, despite it predating ANY metallurgy in Mesoamerica, while on the flip side there are some African societies that smelted steel without ever touching Bronze and still lived in simple villages1/?

>>65221122>>65218535ContTo clarify, since I said "see pic" in reference to Aztec architecture having plaster and painted murals over the bare stone, that Teotihuacan is NOT Aztec itself, it predates them by ~1000 years, it's just nearly all Meso. stone architecture was like thatAnyways, here's how what I said last post applies to their weaponsYes, most Mesoamerican weapons were a combination of wood and stone, but that doesn't mean they were comparable to "stone age" weapons and were just rocks crudely tied to sticksAs seen in pic related (which is WIP and is missing stuff, even), the Mesoamericans had a variety of bespoke weapon types and variations designed for specific roles in combat: Yes, you had relatively simple clubs, but also maces (with both spherical, knobbed, disc, and spiked/morning star style striking heads, which were sometimes metal), what were basically "swords" with macuahuitl, a variety of other spiked, bladed, and studded(?) clubs or swords, what might be bats/batons, quarterstaffs, axes (including metal ones) etcFor polearms, beyond simple spears, you had serrated ones, what were essentially "halberds" with bladed slashing heads, "glaives" with macuahuitl affixed to the end of the shaft, extremely long 20+ meter pikes, etc. For projectiles, you had atlatl, bows, slings (with a variety of projectile variants), and more specialized weapons and platforms, like emplaced stone throwers, possibly siege towers, etcThese were finely crafted and ornate too: A majority of surviving atlatl have detailed, fine engravings, many with gold gilding over the surface as well. One of the last surviving Macuahuitl, which was housed in the Royal Madrid armory, had embedded or inlaid golden circular discs or beads and was painted, and we know from accounts that some other Macuahuitl were gilded (and likely engraved) like the Atlatl, with a variety of other painted or engraved or inlaid patterns and designs for Macuahuitl being known for manuscripts2/?
