>Mercenaries are coming back into vogue>But instead of being insane adventurers dressed in silly colorful outfits, they look and act exactly like regular soldiers, and exist purely to murder civilians in ways their employers want to deny responsibility forWhy?
Honestly, that description applies to the majority of mercenaries across human history. "Hired killer" has never been a respectable profession outside of a maybe handful of elite groups like the Swiss.

>>65232357When mercenaries contracts ran out, they would just go rape and steal from the lands of their former employers. This whole professionalized approachable PMC thing from the early 2000s with its branded polo shirts and slacks is a very new thing, historically most mercenary companies were just Wagner group with swords.

>>65232360The majority of mercenary companies were on very good terms with the state, many were even staffed with significant numbers of Aristocracy.
Actual Mercenaries still are very weird colurful-ass fucking people who dress in gung ho ass clothing. Just look up Prigozhin who led a very mount & blade ass lifestyle from Hotdog seller to Warlord.PSC's meanwhile are glorified mallcops who don't even participate in actual conflict.

>>65232357>>Mercenaries are coming back into vogueWhere?Aside from Wagner they've been kind of a meme, especially with western democracies being like "no that is le bad we can't have you do a heckin violence to stop people killing people"Even the US-based security companies don't really do much beyond make a VIP look like a hard target

>>65232671If you aren't officially part of a state sanctioned military, you are just a bandit. If you killed someone, you just commited murder. If you are caught, you are not a POW, but murderer and will get the rope. PMCs are in the grey area. That's why they are mostly used for security duties by Western countries. At least they can use the self defence excuse.
>>65233277The UN is putting this into question because its own peacekeepers have started dropping heads proactively even though they're technically not supposed to do that.
