Employer offered me dealer pricing from Sports South on my first handgun purchase. Leaning towards a small .380 pocket gun. Should I get a Sig P238 through him or drop the cash on what I really want--a PPK without the discount? What else should I be considering? My only parameters of consideration so far have been "looks cool" and "fits in my pocket".Also, what happened to the all black P238s? All I can find new are the two-tones, and they're ugly as sin. I guess I could always buy a can of Duracoat.
Get a Sig P239 in 9mm.
>>65238317You should ask for a raise
>>65238329I was looking at those P938s. I don't know why, and it doesn't particularly make any sense, but I'm kind of set on .380. Guy at work has a Kimber Micro 9 that's pretty cool.
>>65238317Buy a Fullsize, The longer the sight radius the more on target you will be. No, I will not tell you to get a Glock 17/19, to me they are too light and don't recoil right in the hand. Buy either a p226 clone, a 6 inch .357 from the 80's to late 90's secondhand, buy a good 1911 clone, a retired police 4inch .38spl revolver, a single action army with modern sights Or a Heritage Rough rider. Don't buy a small pistol for your first Foray into pistols unless your target is more than 15FT in front of you at max. Shit, I remember When I was Pistol less in 2010 barely of legal age thirsting over the taurus catalog with the plated gold accents. Just get something you can practice regularly with and have a stable sight picture with a decent weight to it, as long as you train enough with a stable enough pistol you can move on to a shorter barrel and be more confident with it, otherwise you're just wasting ammo, But that's going to be hard nowadays since ammo is seriously unfairly priced nowadays.
>>65238364I considered this. I almost wanted to buy a full-sized revolver to learn to shoot with, but I want something I can start carrying immediately. I'll eventually get a full-size handgun, but I want my first purchase to be an easily concealable one for carry purposes. Also I work for an ammo maker that offers a significant employee discount, so that's not really an issue for me.
>>65238371well, I tried. I seriously suggest you reconsider holster types, placements and the like but seriously, in 2016 when I bought my first 6 inch taurus 669 in .357 mag I learned to reload .357mag and hot .38spl with the test spot of an indoor range that I damn near visited religiously every Friday for at least 3 years. I could work off a loaded cylinder of Hornady 158gr XTPslugs over a Mild load of 15.5Gr of H110. at 21 feet the 4x4 square on a Scheels target in a weaver stance I could at least put them all in a 2 inch group.Tbh I'm more proud about the shot's i made with creampuff rounds with my .44
>>65238395Well, I appreciate the advice either way, but I'm set on a pocket gun for concealed carry. It's 93F outside and I wear basketball shorts when I'm not working. One good thing about my job is that I have access to a range, with a pressure testing unit and a chronograph. I can make and test my own ammo and find a COAL and primer depth that it likes best and build my rounds to those specs. I already have a shotgun for the house, so I'm focused on something I can easily carry when I leave home.
>>65238364>don’t get a Glock>get a P226, 6 inch 357, or a single action revolver Fucking retard.
>>65238317>looks cool>fits in my pocketGet. The. Cyclops.Do it faggot.
>>65238457heh, I wasn't going to say anything about someone suggesting a 12lb SA pistol for a first time purchase for concealed carry, but lol>>65238460I'm not man enough
>>65238317Is sports south not a Walther dealer? Either way have you thought about a Glock 43 in a pocket holster since you insist on pocket carry. >>65238450Have you thought about something like a phlster enigma that will let you carry a larger handgun without a belt? I’d look at something like that and look at something like a Glock 19, Walther PDP compact, or CZ P09C. If you’re never had a handgun before you’ll develop horrible habits and probably won’t be able to shoot that well starting with a direct blowback subcompact.
>>65238507They only have PPKs in .22 for some reason.Maybe I should also buy a Rock Island 1911 in 9mm when I get the P238, as an economical way to learn to be a competent shooter, it's full-size and would be cheap to shoot.
>>65238450>set on a pocket gun for concealed carryget bigger pockets
>>65238543I just did the math on this and I should be able to get the P238, and a Rock Island 9mm 1911 for about $1,050 total after taxes, shipping and FFL Ffees. I think I'll just go this route.
>>65238557That’s more than you’d spend to buy a 4” M&P or a Glock 19 and an enigma. You’d wind up with two mediocre pistols that you’d still have to wind up carrying IWB on a belt and holster. The P238 is going to be too heavy to pocket carry in basketball shorts.
>>65238564They may be better pistols, I don't know anything, but I guess I'm a born fudd because Glocks don't do it for me at all, and the M&P looks like shit to me, too.
>>65238317Bodyguard 2.0
>>65238317Get the ppk, Walther discontinued them in November so no more new ones
>>65238317PPKs are very cool guns but don’t get that as your first one
>>65238334>Kimber Micro 9Pretty sure I have admired those in person before. Get the P239.
>>65238329>>65239209Literally no reason to ever get a P239 unless you specifically really, really want one. He can't even get one if he's getting something through a dealer, they haven't been made for over a decade.OP, get a Bodyguard 2.0 or G43X and call it a day. The 238/938 and PPK can wait, not to mention both are finicky and I definitely wouldn't get either one as a first handgun, let alone one that I'd intend to carry.
>>65239229OP seems to be very unserious about carrying and learning to shoot a handgun. It appears that he’s stuck on getting some weird old dogshit pistol instead of something that works. He’s about to find out that you can’t pocket carry in basketball shorts the hard way because he won’t listen.
>>65238743Was considering this before I decided on the P238.>>65239229I just don't want a Glock, and the G43X is actually heavier than the P238, IIRC. I shot a Glock in 357 Sig the other day at work, and while it performed well, it just felt like a toy and I didn't care for it. I find the M&P ugly as dogshit. I guess I'm a born Fudd. I have nothing against Glocks or modern materials, but they just don't appeal to me.>>65240365lol shut the fuck upProbably getting the P238, and a Rock Island 1911A1 GI in 9mm. $997 total, including shipping, taxes and FFL fees. We've got a P238 in the safes at work for testing, one of the bosses said I could test it, and some others, before I make a decision.
Friend let me shoot this today. Didn't like it either.
Just get a LCR and stop being a gay attention seeking faglord.
>>65238543>1911 in 9mmgross
>>65238450>93FIt's 106F in my back yard, and I'm grilling, wearing canvas cargo pants pocket carrying a bond arms .410 derringer. 93F isn't that bad.>basketball shortsI wouldn't try to pocket carry anything bigger than my NAA mini revolver in basketball shorts.
>>65240804Do whatever stupid shit you want, but don’t make a thread about it next time. >>65241088OP is an absolute subhuman, basketball shorts help identify him as such.
>>65240804Just get a ruger wrangler for a learning gun. You'll be thankful later.
>>65238317>>65238450>Basketball shorts It's really dependent on how tight the elastic waistband is, a looser/older one will result in your gun pocket dragging down. For my p938 I prefer a techna clip under the grip panel for when I'm wearing shorts. Tucked anywhere in my waistband that I'm feeling. Pocket holster for when I'm wearing pants.
get a Bersa instead of the PPK for "first gun"cheaper and better and still larp as James Bond and it has 3 "sizes" baked in.Extended mag, regular mag, reg mag with pinky grip shaved for "classic PPK" look. Also comes with factor key lock, but IIRC its only two diff keys and Bersa will ship "spares" so it only really sorta works if no one knows you got a Bersa in your desk drawer.BTW, WTF doesn't someone make hand-cuffs with more than one key? Or combo unlock? All sorts of Hannibal Lector types defeating handcuff locks.
>>65238317I got a Walther PD380 recently, it owns.
>>65240804>Retard can't listen to people that actually have experience and is only looking for validation.Amazing thread. I carry a full size 1911 with spare mag on an enigma in business attire under dress shirt at work and in shorts while doing yard stuff. All day every day. No one knows I carry. 135lbs manlet.
>>65238450If you wont change your fucking wqrsrobe to carry a gun youre not serious about it and therefore i dont have to take you serious.
>>65243736Not only that, imagine insisting on fucking polyester basketball shorts instead of something actually good for hot weather.
>>65238743>>65239229Seconding this. Bodyguard 2.0 is the best pocket pistol on the market right now. It really does live up to the hype. I considered a P238 when I was shopping for my new carry piece since I am a 1911fag, but I didn't want to trust my life to a Sig and I thought the Bodyguard was a cheaper, all around better gun.>>65240804>I find the M&P ugly as dogshit.Yes, but they work tho. That's kinda important if you are buying a gun for self-defense purposes.>Rock Island 1911A1 GI in 9mmGI sights are dogshit. Get one of the more modernized ones with Novack style sights if you want to go 1911. You'll thank me later.
>>65243736>>65244305Pull your panties out of your ass, you whiny bitch. >>65241127What's that a .22 revolver? I was thinking about getting something like that to plink with for cheap. >>65241085Yeah, but as a platform that I'm going to be learning on and putting a lot of rounds through it'll be significantly cheaper than running .45>>65244450This dealer pricing offer came about after a coworker told the boss I was thinking of buying a cheap .380 like an LCP, , and my boss suggested I get the bodyguard instead, too. I think we have one at work, I should try it out.Appreciate the replies and good advice. Gave me some things to think about, and convinced me to buy a full-sized handgun to train with so as not to learn bad habits that tend to arise from learning to shoot on smaller guns. Also enjoyed the angry, snarky homosexual who had an expert opinion on everything from carry guns to the type of shorts that should be worn in hot weather, lol.
>>65244708This is your first gun? I would just spend the thousand bucks on a nice 1911 (not ria) and learn to shoot and get a dedicated carry piece later. That's what I did at least, and you can carry a full size 1911 just fine but probably not in gym shorts, but If you wind up liking the platform you can get a small one.
>>65244755Yeah, I was also thinking of just getting one of those Colt 1911 "Classics", which runs about 825 with dealer pricing, and an LCP and calling it a day. I've just been wanting a P238 for a long time, but I guess it can wait.
>>65244774Actually this is probably the move. Cheap little reliable pocket gun I can always upgrade later, and a legitimate Colt 1911. Probably $1,100 total after the dealer discounts, shipping, tax, FFL, etc. I guess that makes more sense than getting the Sig P238 and a RIA 1911. Good thinking.
The 43x is a lot bigger than a p238. The glock 42 is a much more comparable gun and it's still bigger than the 238. Only get a Walther PP in .32acp. Sinple blowback .380s aren't fun to shoot.
>>65244708Just an aside, I've got a Super Wrangler and it's super nice. Just a wonderful smooth shooting plinking .22 that you can swap the .22 Magnum cylinder in if you want to go varminting.
>>65244912>Super WranglerNice.Damn, now I want a little SA .22.. I guess I'll throw a Heritage Rough Rider in.. they're only $110 with discount.
>>65244807You will be disappointed buying a modern colt. If you want specifically a colt 1911, I suggest you find an old one used, modern ones have had a very poor track record. Speaking from personal experience, buy what you like, not what someone else recommends. You will always end up unhappy if you settle for something else. If the p238 is what calls to you then get one of those. Don't buy with the intent of "upgrading later," just get what you want the first time.
>>65245067Wayne aint lookin so good.
>>65238317>dealer pricing>first handgun purchase.>something I can start carrying immediately3.6'' Staccato 2011. Less reciprocating mass, less recoil, more accurate (more compensator/porting bang for gas buck). Take advantage of the deal and get something that catches your eye, one and done. >.380Ruger LCP. Beretta Cheetah. Last gen S&W Bodyguard (new ones have QC) for striker fired. Kimber Micro 380 for a 1911. But really at Compact & Subcompact, unless you put a premium on less recoil, the 9 in the same form factor makes more sense; you're not getting more capacity generally.
>>65244807That's definitely the smart thing to do. If you get the ria, you'll just wish you had gotten the colt instead and wind up buying it later anyway. I just picked up a colt competition and I'm super happy with it, also have a Springfield 1911 and I used to have a Ruger 1911 that I sorely miss.
>>65245067Colts can definitely be hit or miss these days, but I've heard cz is slowly improving things. That said I have an a4 ar that's been awesome and the competition 1911 I just got hasn't had any real issues (only 200 rounds through it so far) and has an excellent barrel to slide fit and a better slide to frame than I was expecting but the trigger is admittedly a bit sloppy compared to my Springfield and the Ruger I used to have.
>>65244807Oh and just get it in 45 and suck it up with the ammo prices. You'll regret it otherwise.
>>65238557This reminds me of working at a gun store years ago. There's absolutely no salesmanship involved whatsoever. Retards like OP walk in and spew complete nonsense about what they want and tell you what they want to buy. You can either explain to them a much more practical choice or just not speak, doesn't matter, they'll just buy what they came in to buy and sometimes will add a baffling extra piece that has nothing to do with anything.
