I have to wonder if the crews have an unwritten code that they will all ride it to the ground if they're not all able to bail. The intent is the pilot goes out last to give the crew the best chances, but downward seats are not usable all the time. And there's not enough altitude to try to bank so everyone goes out kind of sideways.

The B-52 is an incredibly robust airframe that does not break easily and is very difficult to fuck up, contrary to the claims of the dirty brown detractors on /k/.

To use the B-1b as a comparison, all of its parts are low-quality. cheap 70s-80's refabs that break constantly and malfunction easily if not precisely assembled. That's why the B-1 has record for the highest maintenance/flight-hour ratio in the Air Force.

The B-52 by comparison is like a 1950's bulldozer or a 40's microwave that was built from scrapped radar arrays. The parts take a lot of abuse before they go wrong, and when they finally do go wrong, it's rather spectacular.

>>65243180
This is true though. It's not always a top-down purge though, you're expected to self-censor and comply in many cases. But if you want to rise to the top you need to demonstrate that meeting KPIs and compliance goals is your lifeblood. Meanwhile most people on the flightline just sigh and go on with their day when the next dumb thing comes along.

I did experience this myself once. We had an engine starter fail on us during startup. just nothing happened after the switch was turned on. Clearly the starter was broken. so obviously we put the switch back to off. cue several hours of awaiting spares, replacing the starter etc. before plane is ready again. And of course we write a report on it. And got chewed out for not following SOP, because aborting an engine start requires you to motor the engine. The fact that the main purpose for motoring (i.e removing unburnt fuel from an already started engine) or that the machine that motors the engine in this case (the starter) was broken wasn't relevant.

And it's one thing hearing something like this from a bureaucrat who never set foot in an airplane but it is interesting when it comes from people who are also flying the same type. Clearly they have pressure from above on them to do something, anything to rectify this incident.
>>
>>65243063
