Yeah various illicit drugs are the most powerful triggers for latent schizophrenia. Marijuana in particular is notorious for it, though I guess that's probably more due to how common it is compared to other hallucinogens. Basically schizophrenia has incomplete penetrance, meaning it doesn't always manifest in people who have the genes for it. You can play all your cards right and still get unlucky and go schizo. But if you're a lucky one who never got the disease to manifest, you can still ruin it for yourself by doing things that trigger it. Think of it like there being a thin barrier between you and the crazy, and if you get too rough with that barrier, it can break, either as a slow leak or all at once.

But all that said, once again, you generally need to have family history of schizophrenia, otherwise the risk is zero even if you do tons of drugs etc. Most cases of 'exceptions' are either in people who don't know much/any of their family medical history, or in cases where it's been latent for a couple generations

Coming from a family where one of my aunts spent her entire life from age 15 in and out of institutions due to schizophrenia and seeing some of the early signs in myself I avoid any chemical triggers like the plague.
