While it's still serviceable and I myself like the gun and have a clone of it, having carbine-length gas and being non-free floated alone makes it a bit outdated. Also, the original M4 was garbage and the gun only became good after the M4A1 and a number of fleet wide updates. Some of the upgrades like the URG-I could contend with modern non-AR/M4 rifles, and obviously you can easily build/buy a commercial AR that is leagues ahead.
