It's always good to have a healthy body for both physical fitness and overall health. The real question is what is the MINIMUM fitness level required? The answer to that is that it's inversely proportional to the effectiveness of your weapon and your skill with it. If you're really good with a G19, you don't need a whole lot of strength or cardio. You can be fat and weak. It's all good. Whereas if you're using a knife, you better have the body that can compensate for it. The extreme version is having no weapon at all and having a conditioned body with good unarmed combat training.

Cardio for one is vital to survival. You'll most likely be subdued at one point and forced at gunpoint to suck one or more dicks. They're not gonna let you stop sucking and boy is it hard to breathe through your nose with a massive wad of man meat in your mouth, I'd know! Ruck... kit up & ruck. Bare minimum. Get off the flat range and ruck. If you don't have kit, throw a loaded mag in every pocket of your pants, throw a backpack on with a couple liters of water, snacks, a few extra mags, & literally just hike with your gear. You'll start to see VERY quickly how out of shape you are, and how little of your larperator flat range experience translates into the woods or rough terrain. Trust me, there's nothing more humbling than being out of breath after walking for 15 minutes and not being able to see shit through a tiny red-dot past 10 yards in dense forest with your eyebrows dripping sweat and ticks latching onto your nutsack.

How does going in the woods and training like an infantryman benefit a civilian who wants to be in good shape for self defense?

Wouldn't your energy be better spent getting your cardio up and learning some sort of full contact martial art like MMA, boxing, or grappling?

This is /k/ not /fit/. How does that help you with weapons handling and endurance the instant you step foot outside of your house? And I'm not saying you HAVE to ruck the woods, I'm just saying merely loading up with your gear and getting active somewhere other than a flat grade will show you how out of shape you are and it will help you identify deficiencies in your rifle setup and gear loadout. My experience with moving furniture across stairways, hiking, and weapon handling is that lower body fitness is not much of a limiting factor whereas more upper body strength and endurance is readily appreciated.

Only area where I’ve particularly wanted stronger legs is in martial arts, and even then I would want a stronger upper body even more. Maybe if I bounced around like a monkey or marched a dozen miles uphills with 80 lb on my back I’d think differently but neither IJA cosplay nor Olympic long jump have been high on my list of priorities.

I powerlifted for a long time and still do, but I started playing rugby a few years ago and its amazing for overall fitness.

running when you are 200lbs ist just destroying your knees. its the worst cardio sport. and it has an insane injury risk when you actually do it outdoorsy inawoods, one missstep, one slip and ankle or knee injury. cycling, elliptical, swimming, stepper, hiking... all superior to running.

plus nobody is impressed by a lanklet being able to move his anorexic body around for hours, but lifting heavy stuff is actually a skill that you need in basically every physical labour job and at home too. just being able to carry furniture around and lawn mowers etc. safely youre basically a cripple if you cant do that. i had to help care for my grandparents when they became old and sick. grandma weighed 190 lbs and needed help to get out of bed and in her wheelchair. for that you need real strength, not some starvation tier runners body.
