But 5 years is definitely too little in a non-existential-war situation and the modern US shitty ship production situation to have major warships built from the ground up around it. I'm sure they'd be well under way however, and a shitload of politics going on given how much it'd fuck up the oil industry.

Also, depending on the size of said reactors/engines, small scale end-users would likely still need small gasoline/diesel engines. Like shit anon, that's how all the fossil fuels came to be in the first place.Non-fuel usage is also a tiny tiny fraction of oil use anyway. It'd still be ludicrously disruptive for demand to drop by an order of magnitude. Some countries have cheap enough extraction they can make money even at $10-20/barrel, but most cheap sources are long gone. Fracking for example generally isn't profitable at <$50/barrel. So sure some places might still compete with a cheap energy world but lots of oil majors would be fucked.
