If General Motors had actually invented the fusion engine in 2020 like in Battletech how would military technology have changed by now? Would there be major warships powered by fusion yet, or is 5 years too little time?

Depending on the exact specs retrofits in a hurry might be possible, and the logistics advantages would be so enormous there'd actually be serious motivation. But 5 years is definitely too little in a non-existential-war situation and the modern US shitty ship production situation to have major warships built from the ground up around it. I'm sure they'd be well under way however, and a shitload of politics going on given how much it'd fuck up the oil industry.

Well, every oil exec on the planet would murder the team working on it so it would never happen without their say so or having a stake in the profits

the first country to rid themselves of foreign oil dependence woyld become THE new dominant superpower for the century or at least until someone else steals their plans. China would go broke trying to get it before everyone else, simply based on how much of their oil is shipped through a narrow strait that they don't own

>Le Big Oil conspiracy
You do realize oil would still be needed for plastics and other petrochemical stuff? Also, depending on the size of said reactors/engines, small scale end-users would likely still need small gasoline/diesel engines. And fusion wouldn't male batteries that have a 1:1 energy density ratio (hell, even 50% would be great) with either gas or diesel appear out of thin air.

Oil is a national security concern, it's not just about the company, it's about securing those government contracts to fuel every Tank, MRAP, Jet fighter, strategic bomber and boat. Losing that would create such a huge industrial shift and profit loss for every politician firmly in their pocket as well

>Government motors being a threat to the government in any way
The US government would be fleecing every other government on earth for access

Retard. OPEC is what keeps oil expensive. Prior to OPEC oil had been consistently dropping in price year over year adjusting for inflation.

Nope, it's not? You can make hydrocarbons right from air and water, either via biomatter or direct. Like shit anon, that's how all the fossil fuels came to be in the first place.

Non-fuel usage is also a tiny tiny fraction of oil use anyway. It'd still be ludicrously disruptive for demand to drop by an order of magnitude. Some countries have cheap enough extraction they can make money even at $10-20/barrel, but most cheap sources are long gone. Fracking for example generally isn't profitable at <$50/barrel. So sure some places might still compete with a cheap energy world but lots of oil majors would be fucked.

Middle East would no longer matter. Including Israel, no longer being able to play one Arab tribe against another. They'd never stand for it. Fusion would be banned.

Tough luck. China is leading the world in fusion energy now and they have no big ties to the oil industry. Like AI tech, once the genie is out of the bottle, the rest of the world has to keep up or become irrelevant.
