what are the millitary implications of everyone and everything having cheap thermal sights

This, people forget what a massive does of adrenaline does to you, I.E. you can have a major artery open and you'll still be running for a bit before finally bleeding out.
>>
>>65268661
actually huge. it neutralizes most conventional camouflage and invalidates most concealment. What works is solid cover, which is a gathering point that will be reduced to rubble preemptively. It makes operating as an infantryman so cumbersome as to be impossible. It reinforces drone warfare.
>>
>>65269641
until effective countermeasures are developed, the dance never ends.
>>
>>65270628
but what is the effective countermeasure? how expensive and cumbersome is it? if it means doing simple grunt work is impractical it is still significant
>>
>>65268661
short answer is that they put them on drones. and you see what that's done in the past few years in ukraine
>>
>>65268661
Night fighting isn't worth it anymore because the sentries can see you anyway, so you may as well use the time to sleep.
>>

>until effective countermeasures are developed
There are none, or at least, it depends heavily on what you mean by "effective". Due to the laws of physics thermal is just really hard to get around. It is possible to still do thermal camo on earth, but it takes a lot of mass and isn't omnidirectional, or is highly environmental dependent. In a world where the front lines of the battle space are getting spied on in 3D all the time that's a tough pull, though for rear line stuff can still matter.

So the most obvious countermeasures are fortifications and to just throw more shit at the front cheaper, so like other anon said drones. If you can't hide as well then you lean more towards quantity and both active and passive defense systems. More mobility. More things that can reduce thermal deltas or shunt them around, which again pushes towards drones over humans.

It hasn't been invented yet, but it will be eventually. People thought you needed an unbearable amount of steel to stop bullets until DuPont came up with kevlar.
>>
Night operations go away at least for humans directly engaging outside of vehicles. More UGVs/Drones at night time replacing people. The US will be the first force in the world to mass issue night vision and thermals.

Plexiglass windows are an old GWOT sniper trick for blocking thermal. Early Ukrainian bunkers used them too. Absorbing thermal and re-radiating it in different wavelengths that are better absorbed or blocked by air is another military staple you can see in the advanced ghillie suits of the 2000s-2010s and some 1990s vehicles, it reduces the range a thermal can spot something about 60%; similar to visual camouflage you can be seen at 300 meters but not from 1km.

Why are you, as a man, fighting at night?
You should be getting shuteye silly Billy!
You got a big day tomorrow!

>People thought you needed an unbearable amount of steel to stop bullets until DuPont came up with kevlar
They did not. Silk and nylon were both used before kevlar. Even steel is light enough to give the same protection from pistol bullets.

Kinda wanna build one of those $600 thermal monocles desu
>>
>>65271974
Actual armor autist here. >>65271298 is mostly correct. Silk and nylon are both less efficient than aramids like kevlar, hence why they are both no longer in use, but did the job against reasonable threats at the time.
Handgun caliber threats have trended upwards over the past century and change, so a silk vest good for weakass mouse calibers in 1925 would be out of gas if, for example, held to current NIJ HG2 / IIIA reqs.
>Even steel is light enough to give the same protection from pistol bullets.
Eh not really. Steel is heavier than aramid or PE soft armor. However, it has significantly lower backface deformation AND works better against AP pistol threats like 9x19 M39/B, 5.7 SS190, etc because it is less velocity sensitive than aramid and addresses steel core far better than either steel or PE. Thus, you will see steel appear as thin "upgrade plates" for IIIA vests to get them to stop exotic pistol threats, or trauma plates to cut down on BFD versus stuff lile 12 gauge slugs, for when the wearer is not willing to wear actual rifle plates.

meant aramid here, on a roll today with typos, lol.
