This is a thread dedicated to discussing anything and everything related to the OG American Army. What they wore, what they ate, how they fought, what they fought for, you get the idea.I guess I'll start the discussion with what might be a silly question. How many on the Patriot side actually served for the entire duration of the war? Like, if you were serving in the Continental Army at Yorktown in 1781, what were your chances of encountering a survivor of Lexington and Concord, or Bunker Hill in the ranks? Was it common or did they have a constant stream of newfags coming and going? Eight years is a long time to dedicate your life to a cause at the expense of everything else, and must've been even longer even back then when you had half the average lifespan of a person today.
>>65303232>How many on the Patriot side actually served for the entire duration of the war?The first enlistment periods were limited to one year. In 1776 three year enlistment periods and even "whole duration of the war" enlistment periods were established to prevent the recruitment crisis of the early Continental Army. But I couldn't find any numbers on how many actually chose the ""whole duration of the war" enlistment period or how many repeatedly enlisted.Probably the most well known soldier to serve for the whole duration of the war was Joseph Plumb Martin.

Forgot the image lmao
>>65303232how big was the Continental Army at its peak?
>>65304748~50k
>>65303232I saw a reenactment of the siege of Yorktown at Versailles of all places today. It was for the 4th because of all the French troops. I only saw the skirmish in the morning and not the full battle.
>>65304823And the natives were in red face which I thought was pretty based
>>65304782hard to imagine the american army was ever that small
>>65304823Did they trace that guy for that The Virgin meme?
>>65304868>>65304823This might be the most based thing France has done this century.
>>65303232>when you had half the average lifespan of a person today.how there are still people who don't understand this baffles me. If you survived childhood, you had the same lifepan as a modern person (70s-90s).
>>65306530There were Englishmen doing the redcoats and I spoke to one American but they were living in England. I didn't over here any Americans.>>65306595There was a whole themed event for America's 250th at Versailles. Reenactments and stuff in the gardens and an exhibition in the palace.>>65306581Slaves and cotton? I don't get it tho
>>65304823
>>65306643Not the same, no, it was still lower.
>>65307890>>65306581jej
>>65307890Lol
>>65303232>back then when you had half the average lifespan of a person today. That's accounting for infant mortality, retard.
>>65303591>>65303593Googled it and that's pretty based.
>>65307890
>>65303232>you had half the average lifespan of a person today. That's because there were more wendigos back then, retard. George Washington personally killed several.
I've enjoyed reading and listening to stuff about the Battle of Bunker Hill. George Washington hadn't shown up yet, and there was quite a bit of uncertainty and miscommunication among the American militia groups. The British set Charles Town on fire with artillery because there were guys in the town sniping out of buildings. Also interesting is that people in Boston climbed up on their roofs to watch the ongoing battle across the water.Factors that influenced the battle included the June heat, the low supplies of water and ammo that the colonists had, and the fact that Prescott's men worked through the night to build an earthen redoubt (fort). There are several good videos, but I like this one.https://youtu.be/FcfzpwlYUZU
blue and buff is a fucking neat color scheme that is unfortunately impossible to use with modern uniforms without looking retarded.
>>65311062Was there any hope of the Americans actually holding the ridge or would the British have simply kept attack Zerg-rushing them to drive them off?
>>65306595>reenactment of the siege of Yorktown at Versailles>redfaceI now renounce my hatred of Fr... no I don't Based though.
>>65314749The third and final assault was literally with walking wounded because the British couldn’t find enough fresh men. It absolutely could have fallen apart if the Colonials had brought up more supplies.
>>65304823Cool
>>65303580Were enlistment durations actually honored or would they regularly find excuses to invalidate them?
>>65303232How detrimental was the South to the American Revolution given they were not only the reluctant colonies to join the war, but apparently, the colonists in the south used the war to settle old scores between themselves to the point there were more battles between colonists in the south, than battles between the continental army and British.
>>65323884They were and this was by design. Congress feared that the army could become a standing army and thus short enlistment periods were desired even if those brought with them the problem of keeping the army together for the next year.
>>65323902t. New Yorker who spent 2/3rds of the war licking British boots
Ignorant Europoor hereI have a question for the ameriburgers : Between the Continentals and the militias, who played the most instrumental role in your war of independence ?When I look at movies and the Internet, it seems like the Brits were defeated by a bunch a regtag farmers with hunting rifles and little else. I have my doubts
Did the uniforms get standardized across the Continental army as the war progressed, like what happened in the ACW, with every regiments eventually adopting the famous blue/white/red uniform commonly associated with the Continentals in pop culture ?Did the Continental army even ever managed to equip all of its soldiers with standard uniforms during the war, or did logistical and financial constraints prevent that ?Also, which State had the best looking uniforms ?
It is often said the war in the North was more similar to the European style of warfare, while the South saw more guerilla warfare. How true is that?
The Americans had the best looking regimental battle flags
