Has the industry become oversaturated?
I've just been going back to my old G26 lately and it feels kino.
No optics, no magazines that hurt your thumbs to load, and still very concealable. Also takes G17/19 mags of course.
Where did we go wrong? This whole industry just feels tired.

covid brought a ton of first time gun buyers to the hobby
the market was already borderline oversaturated in 2020 b/c hillary lost in 2016 and gun bans were losing steam
but then when the gun industry saw this influx of buyers, they thought it would last forever, but in reality guns are something you buy 1 or 2 of and never touch again
it's compounded by ammo prices, nobody can afford to shoot
now states are going back to gun bans too
guns also seem to have become funko pops for adults over the past decade

idk where i'm going with all this but ignore all the corporate/social media marketing and just find what you enjoy to shoot.
>>
i have a friend with whom im going to the range, he is a collector. He has a lot of guns, some of them ar rare some of them arent, some of them are basic some of them cool, he even has a bunch of full autos.

but of all the guns he has his favorite ones are old beat up pistols that one could buy for a fucking ice cream money. they are cheap they are old and scratched but man they are so fun to shoot.

You’re on the right track here since a lot of those first-time gun buyers were techbros who brought their own brand of autism into the hobby. Used to be gun guys were mostly military/history buffs or liked guns they saw in movies and video games. Now the hobby is full of nerds who obsess over spec sheets and the latest and greatest Chinesium electronics which get one-upped by a new model every year anyway. To make matters worse, nearly all the Cold War milsurp dried up, so that eliminated a cheap entry point for filling out your collection with cool guns that were something more than just consoomer off the shelf products. Basically what happened to the car hobby also happened to the gun hobby.

Agreed on everything but dots. The CC pistol market started to get retarded with the single stack 9mm subcompacts that were hot in the early 2010s but the stagger stacks made it even worse. Massively sacrificing shootability for "comfort" is a colossal meme. If you carry a gun IWB it should be double stack and probably either a compact or fullsize.

It also doesn't help that most new gun owners were already addicted to social media before they touched their first gun, so everything they think they know about guns comes from garbage short form media and attention-seeking advertisers. The fact that they're new and don't know any better makes them extra susceptible to falling for the new X Pro-Tac Comp-pedal Compact because they enlarged the barrel ports for 2026 and put more molecules in the frame to keep recoil down.

Right, and the vast majority of DGUs involve no rounds being fired, so might as well carry an airsoft gun right? That's where that logic gets you, or maybe with a .22lr pocket gun and you ignoring that they fail to stop attackers half the time when used. Frankly your claims pretty dubious, sounds like you're regurgitating something you've heard off YouTube. Do you have a source for that? I've heard it repeated a lot but the only break down of the actual underlying info that I've seen doesn't support it. A lot of shootings happen at 0-3ft because people were already involved in a struggle when they drew. Then the rest were all over the place with the furthest being over 20yds. "Most gunfights happen at xyds" used to defend micro guns is disingenuous. The real answer is that a lot of them happen during a struggle which artificially creates a low average not representative of the mode or most common outcome.

The methodology of the 3 3s figure is very dubious, as are most gun studies because we're studying statistical anomalies and have a very hard time controlling for variables like
>distance
>visibility
>exact loads used
>individual skill level
And that's not even to begin to get into the weeds of firearms modifications like grips, sights, and polished triggers which very may have made the difference between one DGU and another with the same model of gun without the same modifications
>just use cop stats
Sounds peachy until you realize 3 important facts about cops. 1) They must neutralize a suspect, a civilian must simply survive the encounter for it to be considered a successful DGU. 2) The average cop is simply a less skilled shooter than the average enthusiast due to the nature of when they can practice (of course there are cops that are great shots but they're more of an exception). 3) Cops have way less of an ability to dictate a firefight to their terms since they're usually immediately visible unlike an armed civilian who can avoid the threat long enough to get into a more advantageous position. To add, cops aren't usually getting run up on and in some cases literally jumped on to the same degree as a civilian is likely to be, thus less likely to be in a contact shooting
In short, picrel. Carry what you want (hell I carry a 686 for God's sake) but don't make your decisions based on shaky stats

Those are actually practical for pocket carry. The new "microcompact" shit like P365 and Hellcat are retarded because they're too big to carry anywhere but IWB, which at that point you might as well carry compact or fullsize like you said. That particular market segment is the epitome of "solutions looking for a problem."

>>65310850
The whole 3-3-3 theory is one of those "just-so stories" that isn't actually based in reality. Actual studies have shown that most DGUs happen at a distance of about 10 yards (about two car lengths) since they tend to occur in open transitional areas like parking lots and gas stations.

It's a dumb post because there have always been both diehard gun collectors and normalfags who only own one or two of the most basic off-the-shelf guns and don't really care about firearms themselves beyond their basic utility. The reason why there are more collectors/enthusiasts these days is because the Internet made knowledge and acquisition of these things much more accessible (back in the day you had to subscribe to magazines like Solider of Fortune or Guns & Ammo and hope your local gun store could order whatever you wanted). Modern manufacturing has also made military-style firearms a lot more affordable even accounting for inflation (a Tommy gun cost almost the equivalent of a new Ford car back in the 1930's).

I follow a german guntuber and he is full of praise about the croatian HS (that's springfield for you murriburgers) Echelon.
>Negative height optics mounts
>Superior slide serrations for loading
>Indexing stipling for fingers
>Switchable grip with different sizes thanks to removable FCU like the sig 320
>Possible future option for manual safety
>SAO trigger better than glock
>Ambidextrous mag release button
>A blocker behind the mag release button so it doesn't accidentally get pressed (dude prefers the HK paddle though)
>A disconnect between mag release and trigger such that the mag CANNOT be released when the trigger is pulled
>Can be disassembled without pulling the trigger
>Conic magazine opening so malfunctioning mags can more easily be pulled out
>Superior drop safety (not sure if that was actually a problem but whatever)
>Right angle rear sights so you can hook the slide on a belt or any other edge
I don't know much about pistols and used to think that glock solved pistols, but the guy has me convinced that there's loads of little details that still matter.

The double stack micro 9 and all of its variants are evidence that the gun industry has been out of ideas for a while and is just trying to trick people into buying what they already own. I've shot a regular old P365 and Shield Plus, and they shoot like a single stack micro 9 (not good) but are too chunky and heavy for the pocket. Then came the versions with a longer grip, and once everyone who wanted one bought one, the same companies extended the barrels too to come full circle back to slim compacts. Now mini compensators are the current fad so people can be happy that their .11-inch thinner pistol finally shoots just as well as a stock traditional compact 9.

What's really funny is that at the same time these slim 9s and the hunt for strict size efficiency took over the market, holsters have become massive kydex codpieces with wings, claws, pillows, and all other sorts of gimmicky bullshit. Too bad the people who can recognize all of this as well-marketed trash are now vastly outnumbered by noobs who can't stop buying it.

I'm hoping that this becomes the new stylish form factor for the next couple years.

As regards handguns, we could stop introducing new models-types for the next twenty years i.e. the manufacturers of new guns could be 'frozen' at, say, year 2020 and we'd all be just fine.
For rifles semiauto or bolt action the models-types could be frozen at 2010 and no one would know the difference.
Commercial firearms have stopped 'evolving' from a technical point of view, the only thing changing or degrading is the build-materials quality from the manufacturers themselves.

Broadly true of the pistol market. Some minor infinitesimal "improvements" in grip and slide width continue to be made, for (random) example the recent Shield X in comparison to the prior Shield. That's where most of the American-market manufacturers are concentrating their marketing energy : minor dimensional tweaks to existing subcompact carry 9 mms

this encapsulates all that you need to know right now. Everyone made Glock clones, but Glocks are Perfection™, so all they can do is zev out and further obsess on milling machines to the point where memes become overplayed memes of themselves.

At the end of the day, it's just 9mm no one will use.

There's just not much to innovate anymore.
People do comp carry stuff because its fun and most of their time with a gun is going to be spent doing mild comp exercises at the range. Not like, competing style practice, but the range equivalent of competing with your friends in a game of HORSE on the blacktop or something.

There's still time to go back and perfect ideas that never really got started.

the best carry gun is the one you will actually carry every day and not look at it and go "eh its kinda a pain in the dick" (literally if you IWB and bend over at all like a normal person). I got a Bodyguard 2.0 Carry Comp exclusively for the fact it's so small you can carry it anywhere on your person and when I bend over I wont get stabbed in my cock and thighs or have a pistols bevertail stab my guts

the BG 2.0 is probably one of the only 'micro' carry guns I've held that didn't feel like dogshit in my hands, biggest complaint is maybe the trigger kinda sucking and having a long reset but.. it's a tiny pocket gun in .380 so

compare that to my J-frame Bodyguard S&W in .38 special with 5 fuckin rounds which sucks to shoot and has a MASSIVE DA only trigger.. I'll take the smaller automatic .380 with 10 round magazines

I can't keep track of S&Ws pistols anymore. I knew they had the Shied Plus and a longer barrel variant, then the Shield X is released as a different model but it's just a Shield Plus that can't use 10 rounders. A couple months ago I realized that they also had a pistol called The Equalizer that's just an optics-ready EZ9 with two more rounds in a mag. Might as well give each gun a different color and backstory too.

If Kel-Tec did that like they're all guns in a Cocoa, FL evidence locker and their backstory is the crime that got them there, I would collect 'em all.

Yes they gave it a different magazine. (Seems to be another 'strategy' lately among pistol manufacturers : introduce a new model so that it can have its own exclusive proprietary magazine)
Shield X is quite different from the original Shield. It's more akin to the minipistol Bodyguard 2.0, in its overall profile and shape.

the ones I just found out about here on /k/ recently were the (Walther, and) Smith & Wesson all-metal striker fired pistols
Appearance like their polymer frame counterparts but in metal
idk who wants this or why
>>
>>65317460
I like the idea of getting interchangeable grip panels with a lightweight frame, but the metal M&P doesn't have grip panels and the metal PPQ is only available in steel. An M&P with an aluminum alloy frame and wood grips would be neat.

Basically what happened is that after Sandy Hoax when Obongo tried to ban everything, a lot of people were panic buy guns for the first time. These people inevitably went onto youtube and the website that shall not be named where all the self-proclaimed gun experts said,
>"Just buy an AR and a Glock 19."
As a result, the gun industry rose to meet this demand and slowly discontinued everything else. Other factors like inflation and sanctions on Russia also affected things, but the response to Sandy Hoax was what really got the ball rolling. Zoomers won't know this, but pre-2014 AKs in 7.62 and 5.45 were seen as viable alternatives to the 5.56 AR-15 (especially for the budget-minded). The final nail in the coffin was when the FBI came out and dropped 40 S&W in favor of 9mm. Even though it was really only done because 9mm is cheaper, softer shooting, and "good enough," people ran with this and took it as gospel that 9mm was now the end-all, be-all of handgun cartridges (it vindicated both compfags and poorfags who only shot 9mm anyway). The industry responded by gradually discontinuing 40 S&W and 45 ACP handguns in favor of trying to one-up each other on spec sheets by designing new 9mm handguns that are a fraction of an inch smaller and hold one more round in the magazine than the other guy.
>>65317460
Engineers design pistols around the magazine. Every time they want to make a new pistol, they start with redesigning the magazine geometry and going from there. The all-metal striker fired pistols are meant for compfags.
