Why were ships of the line painted with a black-and-white livery during the early 19th century? It wasn't down to national identification since it was used by many navies in both europe and america>uss constitution>hms kent>valmy>dvienadsat apostolov
>>65314959It's harder to count the guns, compare it in paint or something.
Tar pitch was widely used as a substitute for oil-based paint.
>>65314959>all that obnoxious stock photo watermarking for a photo in public domainhave a better version>>65314998was there a practical purpose for them striping the gun decks in a different color?speaking of,>>65314985surely highlighting the gun decks is going to make that job easier though, especially if the gun ports are open since the light color contrasts with the darker interior
While white is a color that reflects heat rays, it is unclear whether there was an intention to protect the hull from muzzle flash.
>>65314959looking good is half the battle
>>65315341It might be so that an opposing ship can see if she's got her gunports open.
>>65314959Probably to not be mistaken as anything else than a three-decker man-o-war. These big ships with even more sails could sometimes be faster than the little ones, and especially the merchantmen. If they advertise that you're fucked if we catch up, then it might make them raise the white flag sooner.
>>65314959It's called the Nelson chequer and I guess other navies wanted to emulate his style.
>>65314959I love to think a fucking MCDV, with just 2 M2s, a bunch of C9 and C8s, could defeat one of these at point blank simply because of propulsion.>.50s set shit on fire via tracers> C9s kill/wound people in the rigging>C8s snipe every officer on the deck>Bonus: send the Zodiac and Hurricane to run circles so they spend ammo. Then, when they strike their colors, get those to tow the Manowar while playing Hand of Doom on a Bluetooth speaker.
>>65316614>Modern boats and fixed mount firearms could defeat a Nelsonian-era ship of the line.Ignoring your fanciful lack of understanding of a 74 gun broadside on a 55m patrol craft, your lack of sovl is disgusting.
>>65314959Nelson was a freemason and checker board patterns are kind of their thing. You can still find all sorts of old mason houses around london with checkerboard patterns on them. The nelson chequer grew in adoption beyond nelson’s ships because it’s generally a pretty stylish design and lets you show off how many gun rows you have.
>>65316759Because no captain of these would stay in broadside range. They'd bait then do hockey stops. Not depending on the wind helps a lot. But then again, a MCDV captain would probably join the RN anyways in a Final Countdown scenario.
>>65314959Sonny.. it can't be a ship of the line if it doesn't have any lines! haha it was just the invasion stripes of there days when its time to kick ass
Had there been a major naval battle between the great powers during the 19th century—after 1815—problems of identification might well have arisen.
>>65317853>problems of identificationArose well before Trafalgar, because of all the smoke clouds that would accumulate in a raging battleiinm the Spanish actually blew up one of their own ships or at least savaged it quite heavily before finding out, and even the Brits fired a couple of broadsides into their own ship once
>>65316881Again, ignoring the obvious fact that the brief says>at point blank range. You know ships of war like that aren't just capable of shooting cannons out either side, right? You've got swivel guns, bow and stern chase guns, and if not a bunch of marines, then at least a bunch of muskets, and ~800 men to fire them at one boat. And again, that's besides the point. The point is, that masturbating to the idea of no-diffing a napoleonic-era first rate with a modern patrol boat, then blasting heavy metal to demoralize the crew left alive is so incredibly fucking soulless, it'd be sad if anon IS over 18 and allowed to post here.
>>65318100>The point is, that masturbating to the idea of no-diffing a napoleonic-era first rate with a modern patrol boat, then blasting heavy metal to demoralize the crew left alive is so incredibly fucking soullessAs long as it's crewed by Papists there is nothing soulless about it at all. It is, in fact, one of the purest manifestation of the mysterious British or Dutch soul conceivable."Rule, Britannia! rule the waves:"Britons never will be slaves."The nations, not so blest as thee,Must, in their turns, to tyrants fall; While thou shalt flourish great and free,The dread and envy of them all."Rule, Britannia! rule the waves:"Britons never will be slaves."Still more majestic shalt thou rise,More dreadful, from each foreign stroke; As the loud blast that tears the skies,Serves but to root thy native oak."Rule, Britannia! rule the waves:"Britons never will be slaves."Thee haughty tyrants ne'er shall tame:All their attempts to bend thee down,Will but arouse thy generous flame; But work their woe, and thy renown."Rule, Britannia! rule the waves:"Britons never will be slaves."To thee belongs the rural reign;Thy cities shall with commerce shine:All thine shall be the subject main,And every shore it circles thine."Rule, Britannia! rule the waves:"Britons never will be slaves."
>>65314959Masonic glownigger shit
>>65314959The usual order was to use transparent oil, which was ordered by huge amounts for each ship not only for cooking but also for painting and conservation of different kind of food. (fish in oil and so on.) This usually resulted in Captain of ship ordering huge amount of white lime (they used to keep some stuff dry(they covered black powder barrels in it)) or black and fine ash(they used to fight some wood eating animals and in other stuff like mixing ash into black powder) with time captains started to use that amount of oil to produce cheap as fuck paint direct on the ship in following colors (lime with cooked oil) = white for hot areas. (ash with same cooked oil) = black for cold climate. (black and white paint mixed) = grey for camo during long range missions. (white or grey paint mixed with cheap red soil) = red or dark red for coastal patrols. Later when Victoria spoiled that she likes black and white decorated ships. British started to use those on every possible situation.

>>65314959If they both started off side by side, could one of these sink a modern destroyer?
>>65314959Originally so that your own commanders could quickly identify his own ships in the literal fog of war. Later, merchant ships painted the same pattern to scare off pirates into thinking they have a lot more guns.
>>65323088>can identify own ships>everyone is doing it so you can't identify your own shipsthis seems false.
>>65318100>>65316881>>65316759>>65316614If the modern ship had to stay in point blank range, the Man o War might win.But if the modern ship is allowed freedom of movement, it'll be almost impossible for them to lose since they just have to stay on the stern of the Man o War and just keep unloading on it until it's crippled when you take out the rudder, or just sinks because you do so much damage. And yes a Man o War will have like 4 stern cannons, but all it can hope for is knocking out the modern ships' cannons, and that would take the devil's luck
>>65318100>it'd be sad if anon IS over 18 and allowed to post here.you going "muh sovl" in response to an anon making a fun post about boat / ship powerscaling tells me that you're a humungous faggot and you should kill yourself now
