No chamber pressure, no heat from the propellant, just an iron wadding and some kind of barrel. As a result, you've got a LOT of flexibility in what you're shooting. Flechettes, buckshot, slugs, HE, solid chunks of ice, microchips, sandbags, beanbags, meatbags, fuelbags, basically anything that fits in the barrel and that you've worked out the acceleration profile of. tl;dr coilguns are like shotguns in the best ways.
I’m starting to see reports of “directional energy weapons” being used by militaries. They also have seen some use by law enforcement for riot control. This and the cases of “Havana Syndrome” leads me to believe such weaponry could proliferate in the near future. After doing some research on how these weapons work and potential counter measures, I’m considering adding a layer of thin metal mesh to my body armor and ballistic helmet to act as electromagnetic shielding. I’m not sure if it will actually be effective in disrupting their waves, or succeed in just making my gear hotter and catching me on fire. But I figured it would be worth experimenting with considering the negligible weight and cost. At the very least I’d have a ballistic “tin foil hat” by the end lol.

>>65330615It's nowhere near being near future, but I think I figured out a plausible-ish way to make relativistic plasma flak cannons work. If you fire out a field-reversed configuration torus through a coilgun the FRC will break after it exits the barrel... But if it's going fast enough (think relativistic speeds), the torus won't have enough time to break up before it reaches the target. It would require bullshitium ultra high critical field superconductors, but wouldn't actually require that insane of a power draw if you're only accelerating a small amount of D-T plasma. The next question is how to make it do damage. This step requires another bullshitium technology, namely particle accelerators that can reliably produce an appreciable amount of Pions. You can inject a cloud of them into your plasma and after 18 ns they will decay into Muons, starting a muon-catalyzed fusion reaction and making the torus explode like a pure-fusion nuke.
