The unit cost of deck guns with assisted aiming technology is minuscule, and would allow auxiliary Naval personele to form an effective, 360 redundant defence of unsupported warships
And it's not like the USN didn't see this issue coming, but trying to design a whole vessle around a single, or two bofors was a serious misapraisal about the role of these platforms. The whole point was to build affordable platforms to provide overlapping, redundant point defence against swarm threats, a single gun just can't do that. You don't want a single highly optimised gun the whole point was to fit warships with a significant number of independently powered and crewed turrets, because these could be quickly fitted onto existing hulls to cover blind spots, to put them in stupid places on purpose to cover gaps on existing vessles. The bofors mk4 has a 5 million unit cost but the fit out and integration seriously limits them in their intended role. To the point where the whole ship was altered to accommodate them. Corporates were heavily invested in marketing "better" systems but those really didn't meet the navies needs.
