They're tiny, self-contained fires with everything they need to burn like a motherfucker already inside. Lead is relatively sedate; it takes quite a lot of effort to make it burn. Dump a bunch of plates of it into a sulfuric acid solution and pump that full of stray electrons, though, and you have a primo fire hazard. The main reason we still use them for anything is that they're cheap and relatively stable. By mass, a lead-acid car battery has a tiny fraction of the stored energy of the rare-earth ones in mini electronics. When a nice big pack of them really gets going, you can literally throw them into a river and watch them burn on the bottom.
