Could the naval ram be the answer to the ubiquitous motor boat spam tactics? Just ram those motherfuckers into the ocean.

They have explosives that go boom boom boom boom boom boom boom. Hitting them is not a good idea
>>
The idea is to use the cheapest possible weapon to counter the "cheap speed boat spam." Suddenly, it's not so cheap anymore to spam speed boats when they get sunk without a single shell being used, just fuel.
>>
a single shell is cheaper than commissioning an entire boat just to be used as a ram

You don't need an entire new boat, just fit a LCS with a ram. Also, a shell is used up when you fire and you need hundreds of them to sink one boat.

No you fucking idiot. Stop thinking the solution to everything is to make something cheap. This idea is prevalent on /k/ and simply wrong. The speed boat spam would still be effective if the speedboats were expensive. And countering them with expensive weapons is also effective.

I tied you up and I'm about to shoot you in the chest with a $1 bullet. Before I shoot you, I'm offering to sell you a $1000 kevlar vest. You wouldn't buy the kevlar vest because it's more expensive than the bullet. That's how fucking stupid you are. Yes I'm mad.

Thirdies who have no concept of western economic might are stuck coping with muh cheap weapons since that's all they're able to buy. They'd jump on buying good expensive weapons in a heartbeat if they had the economic means for it.

May we see them?

Somehow the reformer mindset carries on, even though it has be been decisively proven at every opportunity.

Case in point, the original counter to torpedo boats, the (Torpedo Boat) Destroyer. Bigger than the torpedo boats, but more capable and designed to protect the capital ships from them.

If the shooter only gets one try before you get to punch the shooter in the face, take their gun and beat them to death with it, then that $1000 vest is a solid investment despite it costing a lot more than a bullet.

On the other hand, if that $1000 vest subsequently gets shot another 50 times until it fails and you die, it would be an ultimately rather pointless investment.

At the end of the day, there are two solutions to the shot exchange problem. Either "win" the problem defending cheaper than the enemy can attack, or circumvent the problem by denying the enemy's ability to convert their theoretical advantage into gains on the battlefield through such novel means as "blowing their shit up" or "not letting them just shoot at you for free".

Both methods are legitimate solutions, and which is better depends on the details of the systems in play. Broadly speaking, the more expensive and vulnerable a system is, the more viable it is to remove that system as a threat proactively. Drones and to a lesser extent motor boats present a challenge in this regard, which is why the cost of engagement comes up.

I do kind of wonder why speed boats are being discussed as a problem, though, given that naval autocannons are perfectly adequate for dealing with this kind of threat, with lower end AShMs and helicopter launched missiles also being useful defensive tools. Any platform that has human beings on board is pretty much automatically expensive enough to justify launching a guided munition at, and you don't need a high end missile to obliterate a motor boat from a few kilometers away. This would be more of a valid discussion were we talking about low end one way attack drones which are cheap enough that even manpads are a bit too exquisite to be cost effective against them.

Just fucking shoot them, you faggot.

Ammunition is inexpensive.
Redesigning and rebuilding entire fleets for something that isn't even a big problem is very expensive.

An autocannon, gatling-cannon or chain gun on a downward firing arc with radar and IRST to blow these up. Two of them, on on starboard and one on portside for good measure.
