What are some good books to learn about military discipline, language, tract, and tradition? Doesn't matter if they're English or from other European countries. It really bothers me how contemporary western writers seem to be incapable of portraying these aspects in their own fiction, everyone acts like a dudebro teenager or some uncultured bum which seem completely at odds with the reality of personnel I met over the years.
>>
>>65370165
It's bollywood and anime that caused this. I won't suggest any particular novels but books written by Submarine Captains have always captured my interest. They are incredibly professional given the disgusting living conditions.
>>
>>65370165
> everyone acts like a dudebro teenager
Because most of them ARE dudebro teenagers or dudebro twenty-something’s.
>>
It's cultural incest. writers et al are increasingly removed from reality

>1st generation of filmmakers were visionaries and weirdos and veterans of real life
>2nd generation of filmmakers were similar but now also inspired by their predecessors
>decades pass
>current generation of filmmakers are people who grew up on films, learned everything they know from film culture, and are now making more films through increasingly distorted lenses with little influence from reality
>>
>>65370201
True, it's a problem even in Star Wars. Originals were inspired by Kurosawa, samurais, WW2 aerial combat footage and a bunch more. Sequels had other sources of inspiration, so they feel different, but not necessarily worse depending on your preferences.
Then sequels, that were mostly inspired by other Star Wars media, which is why they look alright, but feel so hollow and washed out, like fanfiction.
I imagine it's the same for war movies.
>>
>>65370227
Prequels had other sources of inspiration*
>>

Show based on a book
I assume the book was good too
>>
>>65370201
That's an argument I've been using for over 20 years, though I've primarily used it to describe fantasy and anime.
It used to be good or decent, because it was written by people with real life experiences, and who also had specific knowledge in certain fields (Tolkien being a history and language professor who fought in WW1), but most of the shit we get today is several generations removed from reality, with authors basing their stories on fiction based on fiction based on fiction, etc.
Another major problem is the cultural shift to the left, and most people growing up spoiled, with childish, superficial, feminine values.
I suppose the irony here is that I actually miss the dudebro trope, because today we're only left with the radfem version of that, where everything is essentially the opposite of reality, rather than an exaggeration of a real life stereotype or phenomenon.
>>
>>65370241
It was. The show actually had to be toned down in some parts because they felt like it wouldn’t be believable.

>>
>>65370165
the death of male relationships, rot of modernity, and consequential siloing and isolation of professions caused this
writers are typically feminized men in the sense that they've never been through traumatic situations, live somewhat pampered lives, don't have strong relationships with other men, and consider what defines them as what they think are rather than what they do or who they are

if you're lacking the shared experiences that tie a lot of men together culturally, you'll never be able to write it
like a foundational experience for a lot of men is getting really hurt in a way that you know is an actual problem, in front of other men and knowing you have to just suck it up. like sending a brad through your hand from a nailgun but knowing you can't freak out so you swallow the abject panic and yank the nail and calmly walk into another room to lose your shit privately. I believe this effect is huge in education, and can go far to explain a lot of problems in schools

the average school teacher has never existed outside of an educational institution. they're raised in school, go to college, and then turn around and immediately return to school to begin teaching. For worldly experience, at best, they have experience in some unrelated part-time job or they briefly smoked weed in college. Whatever signal school perpetuates gets endlessly strengthened by the feedback loop of teachers directly rearing the next generation of teachers.

I agree with your premise and think this is largely what results in the self referential irony writing we get nowadays, otherwise known as millennial writing. The reason being that since a lot of these younger writers haven't experienced anything in life other than trying to be a writer, they get trapped in changing tides of their own thoughts and have no basis on reality to anchor them in what they are writing, so naturally because they are only thinking about their own thoughts, they write in an ironic self referential way that's super annoying over time. Unfortunately I don't think there is an easy cure for this as I think to get people who have real experiences and creativity to actually start writing again you need a more gentle society where it's easier to be economically well off, or at least have the collective stress of financially keeping your head above water to be substantially less so that these people have the free time to organically take up something like writing. Alas, in the age of the arrested development adult, that is not possible
>>

because it was one of the first shooter games that featured a really strong aimbot. it had to because it wasnt mouse controlled. other than that halo was pretty much a typical boomer shooter. the cover shooters that followed were arguably worse. and the hero shooters that came after that can barely be called shooter games.

You're not alone, it's an trend which has been known since the 1960s (Debord about spectacle) and 1980s (Baudrillard, who officially summarized the four stages) and 2000s (Japan coming to terms with the end of their anime greats)
"
The first stage is a faithful image/copy, where people believe, and may even be correct to believe, that a sign is a "reflection of a profound reality", this is a good appearance
The second stage is perversion of reality, where people come to believe that the sign is an unfaithful copy, which "masks and denatures" reality as an "evil appearance—it is of the order of maleficence". Here, signs and images are inaccurate, though they may have references to reality
The third stage masks the absence of a profound reality, where the sign pretends to be a faithful copy, but it is a copy with no original. Signs and images claim to represent something real, but no representation is taking place and arbitrary images are merely suggested as things which they have no relationship to.
The fourth stage is pure simulacrum, in which the simulacrum has no relationship to any reality whatsoever
"

Halo was plagiarized from the Vang trilogy of books, in the order book 2-3-1. In the original books, humanity was enslaved by the covenant and freed by someone discovering the Starhammer (a halo) and then the next two books happen centuries later and are about the Vang (flood). They're actually good reads for being generic scifi.

This is certainly true of videogames. One of the big issues with the current crop of devs is that theyve never done anything else, they've played videogames throughout their childhood then went to some college and gotten a video game degree and then join a studio to produce ouroboros self-referential shit. Compared to golden age (mid 90s to late 2000s IMO, though obviously opinions will vary) devs who often were just generic CS coders who had lengthy careers and external hobbies before they got into games; like gabe newell who worked on early windows releases for a decade before founding valve, or the Pokémon guy who created it in an attempt to get more kids into his own insect collecting obsession, or the dark souls guy who worked for Oracle until he was 30 and built the franchise off of a childhood of being unable to read English fantasy novels and just guessing what they were about based on keywords and cover art. Having other interests and experiences gives you something to draw upon, while if you only play games then your only point of reference is what has already been done.

Oh gawd the replies to this post haha
Some good shit is still being made like in one medium as 2026 is shaping up to be a great year, maybe even better than the preceding couple years. I’m not going to say what medium that is for obvious reasons
Anyways, the creative process isn’t going to make sense unless you are actually part of it and make art yourself, aka the replies here seem to be critics ergo armchair generals /pol/ posting in a manner that is I guess “safe” or weirdly compliant in a manner that conforms in a silly way.
Firstly, it could take a long time. You could easily spend years on a script or writing some stuff (I’m about 200k words across a few scrivener projects for one idea, but I’d only like around 20k of those words.)
Secondly, even if everything is done well it can end up as abject failure when everything is put together. Or somehow, the audience loves something that the people that made it thinks is bad. There is a bunch of asscheeks stuff released but we’re still pretty lucky that things are still made. We're even luckier that, I’m not even talking about ai but conventional means to create are incredibly accessible compared to before.
Which begs the question, why do we invest so much time into making fiction and reading or watching or playing the stuff. What people create sort of reveals stuff about themselves, it’s like a mirror and you see their reflection just as what you see connects with yourself and your life.
>>65370165
I’d read older books and hang out with older (respectable) people who could impersonate people older than themselves as they’d reminisce stories and people of their life.
>>65374572
I wouldn’t worry about living “real”experiences as much as the brain changing when you’re about 30.
I’d also pay no mind to other posts in this thread. There is a tomorrow; we make our choices, we have freedom. The issue is they make sense but the ideas can’t really be put to the test

Desaturated designs, schlock faggot writing by retard materialists without the grandeur or mystery or mythology that defines the setting top to bottom, throwing away previous lore every game because you thought of a cool thing to do with your action figures, Sprint as standard, God it must be such a good time to be a reach fan, after all every single Halo game since Reach has just taken everything that defined reach and increased it. If you like reach, you'll love our even newer, even bitchier desaturated fake spartans and even MORE aggressive retconning of iconic designs.
>>
>>65377355
If I was to reply akin to other sentiment expressed here I’d argue the opposite on the basis of the prevailing dominant and emerging intellectual technology actively hampers thorough creative development.
What determines adequate problem solving has been in decline, one could argue because we read less and I’d broach the idea, in the modern age people with diverging personalities (not mental illness like autism) are funnelled into a similar line of thinking to their detriment, when there is every capability to do otherwise.
But back to your point, across the board in every aspect of fidelity the standard has risen tremendously. But that hardly should matter as the pursuit of realism id believe is similar to perfection, it’s just running away from failure.
>>65377496
No it’s actually great and several things have improved the last few years and some things have gotten really good, at least compared to before (duh) because I actually at least tried watching a variety of stuff in the last 40 years. I’m not saying to ignore the bad stuff here, it’s just terrible and obviously made to be terrible on purpose, and I am constrained here to say my true thoughts and such I’ll abstain as it doesn’t matter to me if I’m right or not. It’s just not relevant to mention and even if I should say, I wish to erase it from my memory and act otherwise while also be appalled at the bad stuff.
I say this as in an actual fan faggot unlike the normalfags present here. To go further the bts reaffirms you don’t need insane hardware and software, or even skills and know-how to make stuff, but that’s also unfair to say when just maybe 5% of the global population are within the threshold of necessary computer literacy to even attempt to make this stuff. And then god knows how many of those people capable or bothered to get capable can into being creative. It’s not anything special, it’s just “can you be wrong and err” and do that forever.

Now shut the fuck up with your off topic prattle and start talking about MACs and command officers not wearing protective gear in an active combat zone 500 years in the future.

lolwut? Reach is a game about noble warriors (NOBLE team) in hard times giving their lives for the fight. The game is about sacrifice and passing the torch to the next hero. That is what the game is centered around. It literally opens with an apocalypse and a broken helmet on a battlefield. If that doesn't give you mystery and grandeur right from the get-go I don't know what would. It also has the mystery and grandeur with the "birthright" (as said by Halsey) being given to Noble Team in the form of Cortana and her knowledge.

I actually don't even know what was retconned other than the general timeline of the war for Reach; Needless to say these changes are absolutely nothing in comparison to the retcons made by 343 Industries that broke the world of Halo (Humans are now the descendants of advanced ancient Humans and Forerunners are a seperate species and the Flood came from a fart that came from an ancient-ancient species and blah blah)

holy obtuse word salad
you sound like a thesaurus trying to mask how dumb you are by using as many words as possible, to the point where they no longer have meaning
>>
>>65381704
It's a prequel game that leads into Halo CE. It's not a left turn at all. Halo 4 was a left turn by actually making sprint normal, having shitty enemies, weird ugly Forerunner guns, horrid Master Chief redesign, worse soundtrack etc.
>>

It was a mistake to give any information on Forerunners. They were way more interesting as the mysterious precursor race.

Every time I bring up Control Room, halofags just assume this is what I'm talking about.
It's not hard to navigate, trivial even, it's just completely shitty and boring and unfun to navigate. The same room over and over is actual bargin bin unity asset-flip behavior, there's no excuse. And it's not the only level they do it with either.
>>
>>65382159
What don’t you understand or specifically lacks meaning, but I’d understand as the first draft ain’t always the best and more often than not it’d be “raw consciousness” more than anything haha.
A major component of art is critique which is as important as research and refinement, and possibly I’d guess not enough time is spent in those critical areas nowadays. In your own personal work you have full creative authority and I’d find myself on and off for months mainly editing documents and making small subtle adjustments to 3d models as ideas propagate throughout the year. To do things properly u gotta know a bunch of stuff and sometimes it’s too much stuff like recently a friend told me, the language one speaks would could affect their face geometry like the shape of the lips, but I’m mainly just trying to make things look good and similar to a style.
A few things I’ve omitted or changed was due to the post limit as I’m too lazy to make more than one. I’d actually consult a thesaurus after I write stuff to help figure out what I just wrote, or while reading as there’s always these random fuckin words like perennial, fluvial, reredorter, and basilica to name recent examples. Haha you’re right I’m such dumbass as it never ends. It would be nice to just read stuff without needing to look up to confirm the meaning in a few specific words as one could figure out the meaning by the surrounding context, but it’s also cool to find out to be sure.
>>
>>65378078
I wouldn't call pre-343 Halo particularly mysterious
>OG humanity lost to a bunch of parasitic space mushrooms
>built galactic genocide machines
>reseeded itself on earth afterwards
>aliens find their ruins and worship them
>meet humans
>decide to genocide them because humanity's existence would prove their religion false
343 Halo, meanwhile, is more openly shounen shitty when it comes to writing
>heh, you thought that the previous bad guys were the baddest and the strongest?

Sure, there's large periods of nothing where discipline will fray in your typical infantry patrol a-la Generation Kill, but most writers nowadays don't know when to differentiate bullshit time from action time where nutting up and following protocols is how you don't die, and treating a firefight like Fortnite is how you do. It's like how the krauts differentiate leisure time from business time.

He's also a huge waifufag who basically built his entire career of selling tomboy fantasies only to pivot and shit on anyone else for it, which has lead to everyone in the industry shitting on him as the hypocritical lolicon that he is.

Anyway halo died a peaceful death many years ago and you should really dismiss its puppeteered corpse out of hand. There's nothing here.

>current generation
In movies, it's a 1970s problem.

The problem of directors that are technically competent, but whose work mainly consists of references to older movies popped up in the Woodie Allen/George Lucas generation of movie nerd directors already.

It is not a new or recent problem, if it's one at all. For Anime, the issue is that the adult whales are eating into the children's market, which is threatening the reproduction of their consumer basis. But there being no children around in Japan naturally also is part of the problem.

>>65370165
>What are some good books to learn about military discipline, language, tract, and tradition?
The Art of War. For charismatic dudebro leadership, something like the Robert Young Pelton book's probably your best bet and should give an accurate enough impression on how to manage armed and violent retards.

If you're interested in face-cultures that practice headhunting, I think Montenegrian history would be relevant. They oddly aren't simply about big dick energy maxxing, they also are concerned about how to properly spread the big dick energy wide enough to guarantee there's enough juice around to guarantee reproduction of their society. The Montenegrians and studies in Chinese Martial Arts history are an interesting case in how historic memory among such societies is a mixture of actual family remembrance and literal fanfics of pop culture stories they all agreed to acknowledge as real historic events, btw.
