They're not ideal, but even a cheaply made one is still a sharp slashing sword which will mess people up.I saw photos of the aftermath of an attempted home invasion where a guy took his uchigatana and went to town on the robbers. Hand sliced right open down the middle, ears cut off, slices all over their bodies. They panicked and ran out to their car, but they were losing so much blood they slumped over and passed out.
