Keep a wand for when you are fetching supplies from a town or strolling around in your mage tower, but if things are serious then it isn't worth risking your life because you are too lazy or cheap to carry a bigger stick of wood. Even if you are poor, a staff made of a slightly inferior material will still beat a wand where it matters and cost less to boot.
