Do you agree that the MP5 is the greatest submachine gun ever made?
Also, submachine gun thread.
>>
It was the greatest SMG when SMGs mattered. We have better stuff now, but nobody really cares. Kinda like how we have nanoscale vacuum tubes today that blow pre-transistor tubes out of the water, but nobody is going back to vac tubes (even in music, tube amps are dying out) so who gives a shit.

It is a good gun, one of the easiest nicest guns I've ever shot, in the running for best of the 9mm SMGs, still overrated as fuck though. With how some people talk about it you'd swear they were hand delivered by a west German prostitute who'd give you a quickie on her way out the door.

I'd argue the SMG (9mm in particular) as a concept was already obsolescent by the end of the 1940s. The eastern half of the iron curtain realized they could make smgs with smaller rifle bullets, kinda like what them Nazis tried, and they made and adopted the AK. In the West, we had the M1 Carbine in mid-WW2, there's only about a year's difference between the first adoptions of the MP5 and the Colt Commando. The continued dominance of the 9mm SMG from then on had more to do with institutional inertia and lack of interest in carbine rifles than it was the technology not being there. The MP5 in particular probably played a big role in that because it was really good for it's caliber class and "It's fancy and German!" is an EXTREMELY potent marketing strategy for some reason. I specify 9mm in particular only because stuff like .30 Carbine, 5.56/5.45, 7.62x39 are all naturally supersonic while an SMG in .45 would be a naturally subsonic and could fulfill the quiet CQB niche for much longer, until the .300 BLK meme was reached in the research tree. It really is a shame we never forced euros to adopt actually good calibers after WW2 for their pistols like we with .308 and .223, we're still suffering the consequences for that to this day.

How does it compare to the MP7?

One reason NATO stuck with 9mm SMGs for so long is because the most common carbine we had was not very good. Pre-green follower ARs in general were not especially reliable (hence the safequeen reputation that has hung over the M16 since Vietnam), and shortys especially were practically a liability. This is why bullpups took off during the cold war (and are dying now that the reliability issues with AR carbines are fixed), its also why bong SOF used HK53s alongside A1s and A2s throughout the cold war, and kept using them for some time even after C8s were adopted.
