The shorter the barrel, the more you need to practice to hit. And you need to see if your carry ammo will hit where the sights are aligned. If you think you might need to use one beyond 3 yards/meters, and you aren't going to really practice, I would tell you to look into lasergrips.If you're going to try for heavy loads with a hollow point, I would say to chrono them and make sure they are at expansion velocity. But it might be better to just give up on the idea of expansion altogether (if you have a 2-inch .38) and actually go for lower-velocity/low-recoil rounds so that you can shoot faster and maybe even get in a reload. 4 hits with a nonexpanding bullet probably beats 1 hit with a fireball .357 after which you can't hear.
