Will SpaceX do something like this in the future?

Imagine Starship full of ATACMS bomblets
capable of saturating a circle 4km in diameter

Elon said they will. So possibly, but years late.

I await the High Def. photos of incinerated VDV corpses in a gay music video when the Russians actually try this nonsense in real life.

It's already possible, same with the jetpack, the real question is if it's a good idea to risk losing a spacecraft and it's cargo to a SAM battery
>>
>>65377439
With heavy lift it would be easy to send literal hundreds of tons of jammers, chaff, and countermeasures ahead of a landing. Plus SEAD as usual.

That's why we all bail out of the SpaceX BFRs at 60,000 feet anon! We're going to meatwave Moscow, American style!

Cargo sliding into combat....
I played enough of those unplayable counterstrike levels to pass on that idea.

I think it's kind of missing the point to try using these as combat dropships, 1000 dudes is enough that you don't need to drop them anywhere near the front to be useful. They don't need to be used for combat at all, if launching them doesn't consume half the world's supply of fuel every time just the ability to move the equivalent payload of an entire cargo ship across the ocean in 30 minutes alone is enough to make them the most powerful logistics tool on earth. Imagine WWII but instead of massive convoys taking weeks to travel you just have a couple of these fat fucks moving more cargo in a week than the entire US Liberty Ship fleet at their height.

Can't wait to spaceborne mobility and maneuver ops in... mid-africa.
>>
>>65380838
Unfortunately for this thing, the entire reason we use ships instead of airplanes to move everything is because the cost efficiency of shipping beats out every other alternative if time isn't a factor, and a transcontinental rocket ship is just an even less efficient airplane in this regard. Unless there is a pressing need to have stuff delivered to the rear of the operating area in an hour instead of a day, aircraft do the same job cheaper.

I do also wonder how far away from the front you actually have to land these things to be safe from interception in a real war. A spacecraft capable of lugging 1000 men and their gear along for a suborbital hop is going to cost a fucking lot of money, and a fraction of that money is going to get you a pretty capable mid course interceptor with very long legs.

Reminder those projects were imagined long before they realize computers and electronics would make it ridiculously simple and cost-efficient to shot them down, as well as replace pilots.

If I see any military use for Reusable rocket, it's as a first stage for low-cost ICBM.
Limited to a ballistic trajectory but without a need to carry more than terminal guidance system, hypothetically cheaper than any anti-missiles.

>jetpack
And the mistake of jetpacks is thinking of the user as a pilot instead of cargo.

We now possess the technology, imagine a squad of soldiers calling for airlift, dozens of multipurpose airlift-drones automatically fly and land right next to them, the soldiers attach their harness and a minute later they fly away.
Weight and range is still a bit of a problem for modern drones, plus, since offensive drones come with the package, you can't really use this in a contested area.

Yes, US army is already looking into the idea of using starship (or similar ship) to delivery 100ton of cargo anywhere on the planet within 1 hour.
