>Basically every competent military these days knows that a smaller but professional and well-equipped military is superior to all alternatives
>Both in 3rd world countries and shitty fictional countries attempts to create mass armies of shitty conscripts are still the norm
Why?
>>
>>65380624
incompetence as well as the fear of competence
>>
>>65380624
It's really expensive and if your army is extremely corrupt and prone to pulling coups any reform that the army disagrees with is very difficult to pull off.
>>
>>65380624
Smaller professional militaries are only useful in colonial adventures, overseas interventions and peacekeeping. Any kind of high intensity conflict inflicts irreplacable casualties until the force is ground down to a dust and replaced by conscripts anyway. Just ask the British how their small time professional force and lack of mobilizing potential worked out for them in ww1 and ww2.

The only purpose of the professional military is to maintain knowledge and function as a peace time skeleton for a war time force that's comprised mostly of conscripts There's no other way to sustain sufficient forces unless you're a country with a high enough population. Go ahead and tell Finland they should replace their total mobilization concept with a professional military 1/10th its size and pass that off as a better alternative.
>>
>>65380624
Because when the small professional military fights another small professional military, what usually happens is that both sides suffer crippling losses and have to use shitty conscripts to make up the numbers.
>>

You're just going to have to accept that there's only one military on this planet, and every single other country might as well just have a marching band. WW2 America, Transported through the fog of time to the present day, would have the second most powerful military on the planet.

>>

By another conscript army.

Let's see how the US fares in Iran. They should win, right? Iran uses conscript army after all
>>
>>65382184
Point of order, it wasn't a conscript army at the start of the war.
>>
>>65382210
>By another conscript army.
Most of the Ukrainian military is volunteers

>>65382223
Eh, Russia has always used a conscript army, they just 'pretend' they have volunteers as they get shoved into busses and voluntold to join the army
>>
>>65382226
>volunteers
Really.... did you live under a rock or smthg.
>>
>>65382229
Well we don't have official numbers but we know that 10% of the Ukrainian military is made up of women, who can't be conscripted, and we know that men volunteer at a rate of about 5 times that of women, so based on that we can conclude that about 60% of the Ukrainian military is volunteers with the remaining 40% mostly being POGs.
>>
>>65382237
>men volunteer at a rate of about 5 times that of women
Care to cite a source?
>>
>>65382240
The US military stats for men and women
>>
>>65382237
>>65382242
I don't think you can apply US stats to Ukraine, especially considering the circumstances. There's also the fact that attrition will be much higher for men, as women are mostly outside of direct combat roles.
>>
>>65382266
If anything I would expect even more men to volunteer in a time of war compared to women, especially in a traditional country like Ukraine. And Ukraine hasn't really suffered much attrition. Out of a roughly million man army, Ukraine has only suffered about 50,000 deaths, and although more have been wounded Ukraine has good medical services to get them back into the field, so attrition wouldn't factor into the military ratios much.
>>
>>65382274
>Ukraine hasn't really suffered much attrition.
Yeah... about that...
>>
>>65382276
It's not Russia anon.
>>
>>65382279
People on the winning side still die.
>>
>>65382285
Yes but look at Desert Storm for an example of how few people can die when you're actually competent. The US coalition suffered less than 300 deaths while inflicting like 40,000 deaths.
>>
>>65380624
Conscripts can make for better stories, more varied characters and the very concept of conscription is redolent with pathos.
Writers are trying to write a story that people enjoy, not design functional militaries.
And also, small professional armies are for expeditionary warfare. If you're in an existential war, you'll be using conscripts.
>>
>>65382288
>when you're actually competent
Is ukraine that competent compared to russia? Russia manpower advantage can overcome their lack of competency.
>>
Because 90% of modern writers don't know shit about the military and most of the ones that did passed away twenty years ago. The modern rando sees conflict as less a highspeed clash of combined arms maneuver warfare, and more as two action figures smacking together. If you're talking 40k in particular basically every faction is pretty retarded, but I've always had a hypothesis that Britain's genuinely bizarre level of affection for WWI is why the Guard fights the way they do.
>>
>>65382293
Yes, Ukraine is very competent to the point they're beating western militaries in combat exercises.
>>
>>65381728
Straits opened yet?
>>
>>65382274
This is wishfull thinking, 50.000 thousand death is almost certainly an understatement. Western independent analysis puts it at twice that and a combined casualty rate close to half a million.

Hence why mobilization efforts are not stopping, attrition is not insignificant and a lot more men will end up passing trough the ranks.
>>
>>65382279
>>65382276
i think ukie attrition is mostly to the EU. ukraine has probably lost more men to germany than to the russians.
>>
>>65382288
Yes but the war in Ukraine isn't Desert Storm.
>>
>>65382299
>straits open straits open straits open?
Zegro, the US setting unrealistic policy objectives and half-assing this entire plan doesn't mean that they didn't neuter the majority of the Iranian military. If they decided to full-retard this, they probably would've been in Tehran for over a month by now. That doesn't make doing so good idea, but acting as though the Iranians are militarily superior because need to disperse and hide in place from airpower is almost as retarded as pretending a conscript force is preferable for anyone with actual money.
>>
>>65382321
Correct, the western side in this war is fighting a defensive war, which skews casualties even more in Ukraine's favor.
>>
>>65382160
>please please reduce your defense to a mass of conscript infantry
>do not invest your defense budget into stealth bombers, cruise missiles, ballistics or nukes instead

>>
>>65382333
The Ukrainians have fighter jets, Patriot missiles, Javelins, modern tanks and IFV’s, etc. and they’re able to manufacture a lot of it domestically too. They’re basically a modern fighting force.

>>
>>65380624
Volunteer armies are only a realistic option for countries with no peer threats. They are dogshit for real war between peers as we can see in all of modern warfare history.
>>
>>65380624
Well simply quality beats quantity. Efficiency is king. Armies became smaller cause fewer men could do the same job. You no longer need hundreds of bombers that drop thousands of bombs to maybe hit your target. You can now just hit it with a few missiles. That frees up lots of people to work in the economy instead to produce things which allow you to field better weapons and also not live like shit. Additionally logistics don't scale evenly. If you need 1000 conscripts to match 100 professional troops in combat power then your logistics need isn't magically the same between the two. You have ten times the men you need ten times the food, the vehicles, the ammo, gear, etc. You have higher logistics costs for no advantage.

Now the reason why 3rd world shitholes rely on conscripts is cause it is easier, cheaper and less risky for the regime. To have a professional army you need a functioning economy, competent leadership and enough stability and national identity that they wont coup the goverment at the first opportunity. Thirdies could never do that. So they go with what they can have. Western strategy is to have a small professional core with the option to expand via mobilisation when needed. Throwing mass conscripts at problems is a desperation tactic, no idea why some retards here think that is the best way to. Lemme give a simple example, you are poor as fuck and all you can afford is a hobo shotgun made from a pipe, some random pieces and hopes and dreams. It's pretty shit, but better than nothing at all. Now people here will apparently then go and declare it the gold standard for home defense. Smart people don't prepare for being in an attritional hobo fight, you do everything to avoid ending up there.

I'll let you in on a secret OP, having a conscription system is virtually nothing to do with a fighting army and more to do with having a cheap source of manual labor that can't just leave. It's also a decent way to propagandize young people while they're still impressionable, with the potential to start them off on some kind of basic trade that they will inevitably be prompted to join a government-run bureau after their conscription. Which also propagandizes them to look favorably on your position as the leader of the state because any threat to you is a threat to their ability to maintain an income, even if it's meager.
>>
>>65383275
They’re primarily a volunteer professional army that uses conscription to supplement their logistics

>t. Never-served millennial faggot
>>
>>65384373
It'd be another twenty COIN hell (now with FPVs) after the fact, but there's literally nothing the conventional Iranian military can do to actually halt an American advance.
>>
>>65384393
The US could definitely reach the occupation stage with <5,000 casualties despite the size and geography. During occupation, who knows. It's a mountainous country the size of Mexico of 93 largely-ethnically-united million people with a domestically-supplied military designed to fight the US asymmetrically, in an age of drone warfare. Afghanistan is literally nothing in comparison, it's not simply another 20 years
>>
>>65384513
Keep in mind that unlike Afghanistan there really isn't a neighboring nation willing to host and protect Iranian leadership during an occupation, and unlike Iraq there isn't a neighboring country in a position to supply, train, and command militias operating against the USA. I'd wager an occupation of Iran would look nothing like Iraq or Afghanistan and would probably be marked by high-intensity combat in Iraq and Lebanon as both the IRI and Hezbollah try to make an impact as their funding and arms supply dry up.
>>
>>65384542
I don't think Iran would need a neighbouring country to harbour its leaders, nor one in which to train militia. It's not a tiny country like Lebanon, it has geographical vastness in which to hide and conduct activites that have been planned for decades.
>>
if it was easy to have a small professional army they'd do it
it's not easy
>>
>>65384563
Unfortunately large chunks of Iran are quite inhospitable, scarcely populated, and lack any sort of infrastructure.
>>
>>65380624
In the case of 3rd world countries, professional armies are often a problem for autocrats. Authoritarians don't like competence, because it challenges their grip on power. It's politically safer to give a bunch of illiterate peasants guns, a little cash, and have officers babysit them. Professionals are far more likely to coup your ass.

They were basically at war with space aliens that could delete them with impunity from the sky, no shit they lost. Give them a population of 350 million, the US's industrial strength, a yearly military budget of a trillion dollars, all the US's top secret technology and 10 years to prepare their conscript army and then put it up against the US's smaller professional force and we can do a proper comparison of conscripts vs volunteer.

Desert Storm was an away game for the US and all the non-arab members of their coalition. When you play an away game in war, it means you can just up and leave, and thus never suffer horrible levels of casualties. When the war is a home game and the cost of giving up is extermination, both the numbers of casualties and the tolerance for them will increase.

It's also important to remember that no one, especially not the US expected it to be that lopsided. Iraq had the 4th largest military on the planet at the time, armed with the best of what the Russians and Chinese would sell, with the densest concentration of AD ever assembled around Baghdad. That the US was actually that far ahead of it's 'near peer' enemies wasn't expected.

>>65382333
The only thing they aren't getting from the US that they used to get are Patriot interceptors. Keep up Timmy. Poland and eastern euros dumped their entire soviet arms inheritance on them while upgrading to NATO armor and artillery, the US is still selling to NATO so they can transfer, etc...

>>65384513
>>65384542
It's worth noting that at this point the only real option (besides just leaving) for the Trump admin is to go full-bore with the Israeli plan of total-state-collapse. Basically, the (non-retards in the state dept at the) US would have preferred to contain Iran as it became a failed state, and push the successor state into at least a neutral relationship. Israel would rather Iran be a seething pile of instability and low intensity drone flinging for the next 40 years, since a country that can't maintain water infrastructure or collect taxes is unlikely to pose a military threat.
>>
>>65380624
>>Basically every competent military these days knows that a smaller but professional and well-equipped military is superior to all alternatives
This was largely decided because of monetary concerns at the end of cold war. In the event of total war against peer adversaries, you should expect draft and mass mobilization to come back.
>>
>>65382293
Ukraine has probably become the most competent military in the wrold by now.

They're the only country with experience with both NATO and Soviet weapon systems, perfected the art of drone warfare, are used to large scale operations in contested airspace or even no air support in the case of the offensive into Russia in 2024, and they've been fighting a high intensity war against an opponoent with superior numbers and technological advantage for 4 years now.

There was an exercise with NATO last year where a few ukie drone operators basicallly blasted 3 entire NATO armored brigades.

LOL trump hasnt given a single weapons system to ukraine since he took office. not a single himars or atacms missile, not a single launcher. he even forbids ukraine to use it. when the ukies want to do an atacms strike they have to ask for american permission before, which causes a time delay and apparently the trump gov forbids most strikes, so the weapn system is essentially made useless by trump.

1) the military is a jobs program to keep young men from going into organized crime; there's no actual dividing line between organized crime and political insurgency, just shades of gay.
2) a competent professional military can coup you

So the point of a military is to keep young men "employed" so they can't overthrow you, but not competent enough to overthrow you.
A happy side effect is that sometimes they are even willing to kill the other people trying to overthrow you.

Warfighting is less than 1% of what a military does.

in conscription countries the conscripts are often used as cheap labour for all sorts of tasks: construction, fire fighting, ambulance services, sports events, tourism, civil engineering, agricultural work, traffic direction, police work, even nursing care. thats the main reason why its kept nowadays. the conscripts dont prevent any coups because they dont have a command structure of their own and they dont have access to logistics or even just small arms, they are just a bunch of oblivious 18 year olds fresh from school, they just want to get the service over as fast as possible and with as little friction as possible. they are not going to coup anything.

Anon, I need you to stop being a nigger and read. First, it is not disputable that Baghdad had more AA weapons parked around it than any other city, whether or not you think they were any good.

Second, Iraq had an extremely dense radar network that was actually networked together into an IADS the French built called KARI.

Third, Vietnam-era AD was what was for sale to Iraq. While the S-300 did get it's first export model in 1985, Iraq was busy slamming its penis in a car door in the Iran-Iraq war from 1980 to 1988. It took until 1986 for the USSR to finally start providing military aid to Iraq, and by that time Russian AD systems were off the table because Iraq had been buying French AD systems since 1980, and the Russians were being pissy. Frankly it's not like the Iraqis were in a position to afford them when they came out anyway, so they would have been outright donations of premier theatre-SAMs.

same goes for the flak guns around bagdad, basically no threat to high flying jets. so this story of "muh iraq was so powerful and had thebest air defense evah" is so much bullshit, you genuinely wonder how that meme even came to be.

>1: Well trained, well equipped (not even exceptionally well trained/equipped) soldiers are fucking expensive, and the third world countries you're referring to there are broke.
>2: Western style professional armies also require an educated population, which is even more expensive than point 1. Sure, you can turn some illiterate hillbilly into an impressive rifleman, but you'll need years of education to make him competent in an admin or support role.
>3: Western style professional armies also require huge support systems and second line personnel to keep the guys at the front fighting. This is also incredibly fucking expensive.
>4: Western style professional armies also require organisational cultures that run directly counter to most third world national cultures and identities (see what happens to wealthy Arab countries that try to build modern militaries with their oil money for a fascinating, and hilarious, example of this).
>5: Most of those third world countries are either dictatorships, oligarchies, or so fucking corrupt that it barely matters that they aren't dictatorships/oligarchies. That sort of government can only see a competent military as a threat to their own power, so loyalty becomes far more important in their officer corps than competency (see the exact same process playing out in Nazi Germany and the USSR for an example that this isn't just a 'race' thing).

Tl;DR - they've got so many problems to fix outside of their militaries, and inside their militaries, that they might never be able to fix them - certainly not in a reasonable timeframe. There's a lot more to it that just "LOL, nigs dumb!"

Treating conscription in Finland or late 20th-century Europe as equivalent to conscription in Russia or third-world countries is absurd. The latter is essentially a prison sentence. The US's implantation of conscription in Vietnam was also poorly thought out. I think that if conscription has to exist, it should be like a mandatory university combined with PT.

germany was a totally blasted out waste land full of ruins after ww2. 20 years later they were already europes biggest economy again. german cities are still full of UXOs to this day. whenever they build a new house in a german city they find unexploded ww2 bombs. it doesnt matter. everything can be rebuilt, replaced and dealt with and in 200 years no one will question how many people it took to conquer the donbass. the dead are quickly forgotten.

>conscription in Finland or late 20th-century Europe
its not as useful as you might think. in conscription a lot of the defense budget is wasted on turning 18 year olds into basic bitch mobiks. that money is then missing in other things (cruise missiles, stealth planes, ballistics, nukes etc.) you are basically trading high tech weaponry against light infantry. thats not making a lot of sense in modern high tech wars.

add to that the economic damage that is caused by taking every 18 year old out of education, employment and training for basically an entire year. the companies lose valuable workers when there is already not enough zoomers to replace the boomers and there are severe workers shortages all over europe, the state loses tax income and the conscripts themselves lose an entire year of wages, basically an entire year or their work life is just being stolen leading to a personal financial loss. and since only men have to serve its damaging local men, who cant compete with foreigners that dont have conscription.

so basically conscription in the 21th century = stupid idea mostly.

No matter how "professional", a military too small to control and contest space is worthless. Otherwise militaries would generally be composed of something which we would associate with special forces or SWAT-teams.
But they are not, as an armed force must have the bulk to occupy, not merely the capacity to engage, no matter how mightily. For whatever reason you so choose, the cost of so-called professionals or the expanse of your territory, whatever, the first priority for having control, initiative, is to have presence where needed, of whatever quality. Everything else comes after that.

The Imperial Japanese Navy thought they could save their strength for a decisive battle. Their force smaller, but hoped to be superior pound-for-pound, was however never committed to that gamble. So they lost.

It is telling how you vaguely gesture to literal fiction and tie parts of the real world to it. You're living in a meme, Max.

its the case in austria. conscripts work in nursing care homes, hospitals, fire fighting, sports events, border police, disaster management and ambulance services. whenever there is a flood or heavy snowfall conscripts are being used to clean up and there were demands by the powerful farmer lobby to use them on the fields as well.

and thats the only reason why conscription still exists in austria these organisations that use conscripts as work slaves dont want to let them go. germans used their conscripts in the same way when they still had conscription btw.

t. austrian conscript.

That's a retarded comparison to make, because it was Germany that was the murdering, thieving fascist empire that collapsed under the weight of their own arrogance in that war, while in this war that part goes to Russia. And just like Germany, they will never consolidate their conquests. But unlike Germany, Russia won't be bailed out by benevolent democratic powers this time. It's Ukraine that will have the big bucks backing it's reconstruction, after Russia collapses and abandons all its ill-gotten occupied territories.

For the US and other larger populated countries I agree it's absurd, but having a semi-trained male population is useful, especially for mobilization. Like I said, I find the former-Soviet/Arab-style conscription system to be to be frankly pointless torture. On the other if you ask any older European man about their conscription service, the worst thing that happened to them was usually having to run a few extra laps, not being subjected to pointless torture. In Finland conscription is basically a mandatory educational experience that can also count toward university credits.

>and is raising everyone's prices globally
US is an oil producer so this is to our benefit

bullshit, every older guy in austria will tell you that they just sat around being bored for months, often heavily drunk. in conscription you get taught something during the first few weeks and then its either just sitting around on base staring in the smartphone screen or getting bossed around doing completely pointless kafkaesk tasks. and the civil service conscripts are doing low skilled labour in hospitals like carting patients around or washing the dishes. for 400eur per month, while they could be studying in university already. its such a giant useless waste of precious life time, it makes one cry. of ocurse you will find some stupid npc slave uncle toms who will say being a slave and doing useless bullshit was cool because they were young and didnt care. but thats just fools not recognizing what was done to them.

oil and oil related industry makes up 2% of the american gdp...the other 98% are not suffering from high oil prices.

That's still vastly better than the ex-Soviet/Arab system. You can still admit that. And I agree it should be shorter, maybe six months at most. Teaching your male population to handle a rifle and giving them an official rank and place in the system is useful in the long term in case of mobilization or a security threat. We saw that with Ukraine.
>>
>>65388640
Yes but it's hurting our enemies more, especially China.

Depends on what's meant by 'mobilization'. If it just means accepting a lot of volunteers like what Ukraine is doing with them already pre-trained to make it faster that's good.
>>
>>65388645
>already pre-trained to make it faster that's good.
Obviously, but it's not just the training. Having their names in the system also makes them easier to mobilize. Russia is a mad-dog state, but it's still a threat to European countries.

>We saw that with Ukraine.
what is useful? the ukrainians have been getting murdered on the frontline for years now with no victory in sight. their homes have no power, no heating, everthing gets blown up. and ukraine cannot even use its conscription model since pressing the young into service would be political suicide and a lot of men have already fled and arent available.

ukraine is a good example why conscription is a major mistake. imagine if they had focused on ballistic missiles and nukes instead. putin would have never dared attacking them. conscription is no deterrence at all, noone is scared of infantry.
>>
>>65388657
If they're volunteering they're presumably already bringing their ID with them so mobilization wouldn't be affected by that aspect.
>>
>>65388657
>Having their names in the system also makes them easier to mobilize
yeah good luck mobilizing them from germany. putting meat on the frontline for mass meat assaults is not a winning strategy. whats the goal in manning the frontline with mobiks? they will not stop nukes, they will not stop ballistic missiles, they will not stop cruise missiles, they will not shoot down jets, they will not stop stealth bombers, they will not give you satellite intel, they cant give you starlink. you are really just dying a useless death, just so some politician can say "we have cards", while his children are someplace safe and waiting to take over your apartment once you are dead.
>>
>>65388658
ukraine is about to be scared of infantry when that big batch of russian rapeniks gets mobilized after the election
>>
>>65388687
and whats the bigger problem for ukraine? ballistic missiles, drones, glide bombs etc. blowing up their factories, ammunition depots, power plants, gas stations, that new russian starlink etc. or a few hundred thousand mobiks? i would choose the mobiks every single time. infantry can be dealt with, the rest is impossible.
>>
>>65388721
I thought this supposed new wave of mobiks is meant to be enough to make ukraine lose
>>
>>65380719
>Just ask the British how their small time professional force and lack of mobilizing potential worked out for them in ww1 and ww2
Pretty good since they won both those wars.
>>
>>65389428
In bith wars the British army was not the main factor, but their Navy. And in both wars they used conscriptions.
>>
>>65389468
>in both wars they used conscriptions.
but only after the war started, not before, which enabled them to spend money on ships, planes and carriers instead of fielding 4 million mobik infantry and having a land focused army. if britain had done that their navy and the raf would have been substantially smaller and the germans could have sea blockaded them more easily.
