This desu. I used to work in an outdoor outfitter shop and the amount of people who thought they needed past-the-ankle boots to go hiking on-trail in a national park was ridiculous. Ankle-high boots are sufficient for like 90% of people going hiking or hunting, in fact you're more likely to roll your ankle in high boots if you're not actually trekking difficult terrain for days on end.

Milsurp boots as in OP's pic (jungle boots i believe) are only necessary if you're LARPing or going trekking off-trail somewhere you expect will be muddy or wet.

Past the ankle-boots are only effective in uneven terrain but anybody's who's worn milsurp boots can tell you that you'll roll your ankle the second you step on a rock or slippery surface the wrong way. Besides that their purpose is mainly sanitary by preventing mud or water from seeping in and giving you trenchfoot. To-the-ankle boots are simply superior (iirc the Brits issued ankle-high boots during WWII) and can be combined with puttees for protection against mud or water.

ive had this issue with two completely different military boots from different decades. after repeated use, there is a part of the insides of the boot the gets alittle bent over and then rubs your heel wrong, causes blisters and tears them up. It's on the inside of the boot right at heel level.
You can fix it by carefully using a file on it to wear it down. It does not effect the longevity of the boots and the boots that have this problem have had longer lifespans than the more modern boots that havent.

Have ended up just buying a new pair of Caterpillar "second shift" boots every ~9-12 months and throwing Dr Scholes insoles in them.
I've tried them all. Redwings, Danner, etc., plus every surplus set you can find.
Even tried Puma safety work boots once.
For the most part they're all similar in terms of lifespan, just different in the way they're shaped, what callouses you end up getting and where, and how much they cost.
The Cats seem to be the best balance of comfort, insulation, water resistance, durability, and cost for me so far, so I've just stuck with them because it's easy.

I did in the past, when I was like 20. Very rapidly I stopped seeing the point of putting the effort in.
I now waterproof them, but honestly only really during the winter.
Any polishing pretty much gets ruined immediately when you get concrete juice all over them, or roofing tar, or hot asphalt, etc., it just strips the finish off and you're back to square one, if you can even get the shit off in the first place.

Look into duct taping the heel area with the most friction if these are daily wearers. I started doing it in basic on the concrete stompers they gave out during covid and never stopped. Downside is when the tape comes off it'll take a good chunk of the material with it
