Why don't they send guys who fail BUDs into rates like EOD, Aircrew or Seabee instead of BMs, QMs or MAs? Why the fuck would some guy who want to be an under water knife fighting commando want to spend 6 years chipping rust and painting?

Back in the day to join NSW you had to enlist as another rate and go through A School. Luttrel was a Corpsman(makes sense), Chris Kyle was intel, Axelson was a Sonar tech, and that manlet who burned down USS Bonhomme Richard was an un assigned seaman.

Why don't they put all these guys into rates that require alot of weapons handling and land warfare OR just transfer them to the Marine Corps? And as someone who joined before they changed the rules why would you accept a contract for a shitty rate just to get a shot a BUDs knowing theres an 80% chance you would fail and be locked into a job you hate for 6 years?
>>
Because otherwise they wont fill those slots.

Well too bad, don't have shitty jobs. You could lump GM, BM and QM into one single rate. So yeah youll have to chip and paint but youu also get to do VBSS and fire 50cals.
>>
>>65388010
at some point you have to get a job and contribute to society instead of being a useless fuckin government nigger
>>
>>65388095
Yeah so why not give them jobs they want to do? Here in Australia if you fail Clearance Diver training you either stay in as a Boatswain(which here is a combination of a BM and GM), transfer to the Army as a grunt or leave the military and re-enlist as something else.
>>
Because the Navy does what's good for the navy, not what's good for you personally
There are shitty jobs, that are nonetheless necessary, that they need people to do. People don't want to do those jobs, but they want to be SEALs. So they get a deal: they get the opportunity to become SEALs, but if they can't cut it they agree to do the shitty job instead. It's a gamble, but one that both parties are willing to take because there's a highly desirable potential outcome for either of them
This way the Navy gets a steady stream of manpower to fill those needed but undesirable positions, as well as a smaller trickle of genuine SOF material
>>
>>65388122
Why give a failure a desirable job? Why give them special treatment? Why do they deserve it?

Also, don't use the fucking RAN as an example of how to do anything to do with manning. The RAN has been a basket case for manning for multiple decades and has, like, half of its fucking trades critical and never has enough people to maintain even a modest operational tempo. Get back in your box you jingoistic nigger. The USN has literally zero things to learn from a token navy that doesn't even deploy like the RAN, least of all about manning.

>Why give a failure a desirable job? Why give them special treatment? Why do they deserve it?
Because a guy who fails a difficult selection process could still be an above-average material for the military, esp. if he drops out in a later phase or because of an injury...

Someone who shows genuine effort and grit but doesn't meet the super-high standard would make a good combat marine, for example, and it's a waste to delegate that guy to unclogging drains on a fleet oiler.

IIRC the Bongs do something like that with their SAS selection where if you fail, you get recycled back to unit you came from with "if you got this far it's already something, mate" - but their whole application pipeline is different so it's not really transferable.
>>
>>65388334
SAS selection has no relevance to this conversation. Everything else is just wrong. Almost no one who attempts and fails direct entry SF pipelines is "a cut above regular blah blah blah". Mostly they're prima donna snowflakes.

>EOD, Aircrew
None of those are "lesser" than seals, theyre highly qualified jobs in their own right and the last thing they want is to be saddled with buds washouts.
>seabee
If you didn't sign up to be a builder or electrician then you're not going to resent it any less than being a boatswains bitch or hall monitor
>Why the fuck would some guy who want to be an under water knife fighting commando want to spend 6 years chipping rust and painting?
He doesnt, so he has an incentive not to quit. If he still chooses to, he has made an informed choice to do so.
>>
>>65388334
>if you fail, you get recycled back to unit you came from
Return to unit is irrelevant in this conversation, because it mainly revolves around direct-to-SOF pipelines, where you sign a document to go to selection right out of boot camp, before you're ever assigned to a unit (ergo there is no unit to return you to, so you're assigned according to the needs of the Navy at the time)

Speak English doc, not jargon

Because he wasn't good enough to be an underwater knife fighting commando. You can want anything in the world but if you don't meet the standards then you don't meet the standards.

The navy doesnt care what you want. If you couldn't pass your end of the contract obligation, tough shit. You think the big blue has time to cater to everyone? It just spent a several hundred thousand dollars trying to train you, they're getting their money and manpower back one way or another. Maybe if you get friendly with the civilian in charge of posting, you can get a not so shit job like MA or become a plumber.

Fuck that. What the navy really needs is somebody to scrub the shitters.
