This also wasn't the first time replacement of some or all of the Iowa classes secondary battery with 8-inch guns was proposed. There was a proposal in 1948 for the then not-yet cancelled BB-66 Kentucky to replace some or all of the secondary battery with a duel version of the 8-inch guns fitted to the Des Moines class cruiser.

The Army also wanted a CH-47 to be able to carry it underslung. The United defense proposal won and was renamed "Crusader" in 1994. The XM2001 was cancelled after $2.2 Billion dollars of development by SecDef Rumsfeld in 2002. He considered it neither mobile nor precise enough. Its developmental successor, the Future Combat Systems Non-Line of Sight Cannon (NLOS-C) would also be cancelled, the M109 marches on.
