It's just outrageous that the armed forces have been neglected to the point that you are completely unable to control your own territory. Ireland has harvested a mountain of shekels both from the EU (German and British taxpayers) and from setting business rates artificially low to jew the very countries who subsidised them and now defend them for free.
>>

no-one is going to invade Ireland except the invaders their own politicians bring in, but there is vital infrastructure in the waters which they have no idea if it's being fucked with. The Russians sometimes do an incursion just because they can to shit them up.

not really, if you're following both official and unofficial public debates in this area, but what can you do?
Ireland is the freeloader in the college group assignment team
what can you do with freeloaders when there is no prof to complain to, or when the college administration doesn't force them to contribute?
you tell them to contribute what little they can, ignore the brickbats from the peanut gallery (because they will insist on commenting loudly and critically on everyone else's work, while giving a host of excuses for their own), and everyone else gets on with work

and that's what the bongs and burgers do

1. Ireland is directly inside UK's security environment and athwart the US - UK - EU corridor. Her geographic situation is one of the most secure in the world right now, for a change. There is no realistic territorial threat to her, and no threat at all that is solved by infantry, tanks, or jets.

2. Ireland's airspace does get buzzed by Russian bear bombers who turn off their transponders. Ireland is installing upgraded radar to ensure safe traffic in her airspace. The UK's RAF, which will have been covering these bombers across the North Sea, have permission from Ireland to continue to do so through Irish airspace. This has been interpreted as the Irish being defended by the RAF, but the bombers are threatening the UK, not Ireland. There is nothing in Ireland to threaten. The agreement also means that the RAF can intercept these bombers well away from the UK and at a remove that allows the obfuscation of response times.

3. Ireland is an island with no strategic resources of steel, coal, or oil; no heavy industry; no manufacturing capacity; and no expertise in any field that could be turned to developing weapons or ammunition for defense. She is food and water secure, but literally everything else is imported - and pretty much all of that via one port. There is essentially no tree cover, and hardly any mountains worthy of the name. In short, even with large conventional forces, she is not defensible.

4. Ireland is not the EU's 'weak link', for, were she taken over by some enemy force, that force would find itself just sitting on a damp island in the Atlantic with nowhere to go. The actual threat is that 75% of all internet traffic between North America and Europe passes through her EEC. For this, she needs to - and plans to - develop her naval capacity which is currently basically nil. Meantime, her waters are widely considered to be crawling with US, UK, and French submarines.

5. Ireland is defenseless from the point of view of fighting off Russia - but that is, and never was - Ireland's primary threat. Ireland can contribute in meaningful *other* ways to common EU defense against Russia, but her own reality has not changed no matter what tinpot Tzar is banging a drum a thousand miles away. Her defense forces exist purely to retain equipment and knowledge to seed assymetrical resistance in the event she is again invaded by the British, even if it is impolite nowadays to say so.

6. If Ireland is facing a realistic danger of invasion, then the world as we all know it has ceased to be long before. Spending billions on conventional defence would be a morally repugnant waste of money just to keep up with the Joneses. Ireland has upgraded and hardened her non-conventional defences, and continues to do so.

7. Ireland owes no moral debt of mutual defence to any other country save France and Spain, and no legal obligation to anyone. What Estonians or Poles or Swedes have to say on the matter is neither here nor there to her. She had this written into the Lisbon treaty before it was finally ratified. Plenty laughed at the silly Paddys taking two attempts to pass that Treaty, but that was why and you never questioned it.

8. It also bears mention that Ireland does not somehow 'steal' money from the rest of the EU by virtue of her competitive tax rates for US corporations. Firstly, stop giving your money to US corporations. Secondly, once you do, it's their money we're taxing, not yours. Thirdly, eight other EU nations have lower rates than Ireland, Ireland is just better. Fourthy, tax is a national competence - there is nothing stopping any other EU country from capturing as much of Apple's money as they care to, it's just easier to kiss Apple's ass and then tell your dumb electorate it's somehow Ireland's fault you're broke.

lolno, there was an agreement that British troops would help defend Ireland in the event of a German invasion though.

Didn't you literally just say Ireland was food secure? In any case show me a country where a politician hasn't said something absolutely unhinged and then got the shit kicked out of them in the media for it. There aren't many in the UK that actually like Priti Patel, it was never a serious proposal. The kernel of truth is in there though that if the EU 'blockaded' the UK by refusing to make reasonable trading arrangements, Ireland would have been hurt by the nature of a lot of imports previously happening via the UK.

> Most of the UK's establishment would consider Irish independence (or the independence of any small country really) as entirely secondary to Britain's need.
Can you read that back to yourself for a second - Ireland is independent of the UK. Why should the UK consider Ireland's needs superior to her own? What a dumb take.

Ireland doesn't need a military because it is relatively isolated from any potential conflict front and anything that threatens Ireland will also threaten Britain so they can always rely on the UK to bail them out. Ireland just maintains a purely nominal military for civil contingencies and to make a contribution to UN peacekeeping. More Irish join the British Army than their own defence forces.

For most of their history they faced the threat of invasion. The NATO buffer only began in 2004 when Slovakia joining closed the gap between Poland and Hungary and they're not so naive to believe that it would automatically last forever. They also used to have a decent military industry and maintaining the armed forces was directly tied to that.
Meanwhile the Republic of Ireland had little to fear from the UK trying to reclaim the land and seaborne invasions have always been highly doubtful.
The key problem for Switzerland is that all their military power couldn't stop them from losing their autonomy. Something like the Wahlen plan would no longer be possible.

It's intentional, it' to keep them soft. As a consequence, Irelands opinion never matters and people do whatever they want with Ireland. Pretty sweet deal.

They had a little civil war in the 1850s, and while their role in WW2 was peripheral, it did exist. the Swiss Air Force engaged both Axis and Aliied planes that strayed over the border, shooting down a few (on both sides) and despite being neutral Switzerland was bombed repeatedly by the Allies targeting factories producing goods for export to Germany, including a big Blitz-style raid over Zurich in 1944 which killed over 80 civilians.

Not really. Pre-Napoleonic Switzerland was more loosely associated but nowadays it's a federal republic, basically the USA in miniature with its 26 cantons being equivalent to states.

In Vietnam the issue wasn't the insurgency (the VC were basically treated like Donbabweans, they nearly got wiped out by the Tet Offensive and were replaced by North Vietnamese regulars) but the fact that the US was trying to avoid a war like Korea. The "muh rice farmers" meme is exactly that, an idea that spread because it can survive and become stronger as it gets retold. But it's not reality.
Iraq basically deserves an entire effortpost on its own, but Afghanistan really shows that a better COIN strategy wouldn't have done squat.
We had our nominal allies aiding the Taliban by giving them safe haven or sending them money. Afghanistan had a ton of jobless men whose only choices to get a paycheck were farming opium poppies or insurgency. And the most rugged terrain happens to be where the tribes hold the most influence, not whatever the fuck they government is saying in Kabul.
Better counter-insurgency wouldn't target their funding mechanisms. It would require going against allies.
Denying the Taliban access to Pakistan would require a much greater kinetic response and a major diplomatic kerfuffle.
Fixing the entire country so that people don't join the insurgency would require creating an economy for them, and somehow fix the corruption which would basically mean the return of colonialism and put Americans in charge with young Afghan future leaders raised within the system so they can apply Western democratic values to governance rather than defaulting to thirdie kelptocracy once the Murricans leave.

Ireland hasn’t had a major enemy since the English somewhat were kicked out they’ve never really needed a military per se now they still need one but neglect it and treat their veterans horribly
>>
>>65391449
Because who the fuck would invade Ireland of all places? They don't need anything major, just enough to be able to put up enough resistance to make it not worth it and deal with domestic issues.
>>
>>65391449
The only thing the Irish fight for is their right to import more 3rd worlders and to keep the English out
>>

Here's the thing.
It's not their problem that it's not their problem, because it isn't their problem.

The benefits great powers get from their great power status, they have to pay for in things their great power status affords them. In this context this is defense. The Irish are free to cut deals with other regional players, who will readily offer them more favorable agreements, therefore they are able to hold the British hostage for their own security.
Great powers are powerful hammers, but significantly more vulnerable if they cannot wield their military might.
See Transcendental Warfare and the current Iran crisis for more examples.

I think you underestimate how much Americans LARP as Plastic Paddies.

In this woke era, every white American is desperate to claim Irish heritage. It's basically winning the jackpot of modern identity politics - you get all the practical advantages of White Privilege, but you never get called out on them because you can simultaneously invoke Colonial Victimhood. Being an official Victim grants you moral superiority over others. Plus they get to dress up in rebel chic by singing "ooh ah up the 'Ra" and pretend to be brave warriors by proxy.

Irish were recrited often by both sides. They are basically a mercenary nation and particularly suited to infantry due to genetics. It's pretty much an international arrangement that no one goes to war with them and they are no longer available. Even then they inveted modern guirella warfare and would be a fucking nightmare if they were motivated. They do good cop stuff for the UN. The world is better off that way. Ukraine is the same shit. They should be fenced off and be neutral before they go and make the french and british a new empire or recolonise India. Anyone who invades them would have bombings in their capital city that week. It's just not worth it.

That's the point - LARP. Murricans like to LARP as many things. Being defenders of democracy is one of those things. Or being the arsenal of democracy. And much such other things. Yet we see how now the US is deliberately starving ukies of air defense as point to help russians (Reagan is spinning in his grave).

It's not a rip off, it's just a matter of geography for the UK. They RAF would still *want* to patrol and cover that area because it's fucking right next to the UK, so it's not like it really matters if Ireland pays for it or not, there is no scenario where the British won't monitor the skies and seas around Ireland because the skies and seas of Ireland are also the skies and seas of the UK.
The whole island could literally disappear tomorrow, it still means the RAF has to scramble to monitor a Russian airplane flying over that airspace.

The British government being amicable to Home Rule is a direct result of the American Chimpout, it doesn't precede it. Westminster "learned their lesson" with 1776, without it they'd likely have been a lot stricter with Canada or Australia.
The real tragedy is that the UK was also on the brink of peacefully granting Home Rule to Ireland in 1914, but then World War I started and the government shelved that proposal "for later" and the rest is history.

Churchill merely offered to "work toward a declaration in principle of a united Ireland" which is basically a promise that means nothing and was treated as such. Further, the RN didn't really want the southern bases once France fell - they were antique, and subject to German air attack. Covoys were routed north via Derry-Iceland instead.

Churchill was an imperialist who resented the independence of any colonial or post-colonial nation. He even tried to blame Ireland for the losses at Scapa Flow, and accused Ireland of 'frolicking' with the Germans and Japanese (Ireland didn't even make contact with Japan until the 1950's). Despite Ireland's covert assistance during the war, he authorised the publication of a letter in the American press accusing Ireland of refusing access to her ports (she was never asked for them) and working with the Axis, just to undercut the Irish-American vote and prevent Ireland from being difficult for Britain in the post-war settlement of Europe, and which still gets parrotted to this day.

The guy was a bone-fide asshole of whom even the British got tired of immediately after the war was over; he just gets glazed by UK conservatives and manosphere idiots.

The history of the wild geese was an unwillingness by most to serve in the British military when it was militantly anti Catholic, something wellington dropped and fough duels over getting done typically they went into the service of Catholic monnachs liek France and Spain.

Kept their militia culture in tact.
Which is what the founding fathers originally were trying to copy with the 2nd amendment. Making it normal for people to go to the range every month to keep them ready as a standing militia force. (Like they do in Switzerland) And to have them also deter the government from becoming tyrannical cunts. (Like they do in Switzerland)

It was definitely not intended for how it’s used now. Sold to the public out of fear of criminals and schizos. Or as some kind of macho dumbass expression of freedumb, where everyone is “free”***** but nobody is organized or serious at all in being able to defend their rights as human beans.
