How much is a military negatively affected by being made up of multiple different nations, with different languages, training, weapons, magazines, tactics, etc? Like if the EU was a combined military or the Imperial Guard from 40k.

NATO is a thing Anon, and the nations typically just choose a language that they all vote on. And the High Lords determined that damn near everyone needs to speak Low Gothic. The only exception is the Mechanicus.
>>
>>65391860
>NATO is a thing Anon
NATO's just an alliance, not a single military organization, and it's notable that 'low gothic' has a ton of dialects some of which are mutually unintelligable. Saying people speak "Low Gothic" is about as useful as saying they speak the "Romance languages", an Italian, Frenchman, and Spaniard still won't understand one another even if their linguistic background is the same.
>>
>>65391852
They don't tend to work side by side. IE, militaries in the GWOT coalition would have designated provinces they would handle, for example the British were concentrated around Helmand and Australians handled Uruzgan; so while they may interact on bases; in combat they would largely work within their own logistics and CoCs. So language barriers, training differences and equipment commonality isn't really a problem.

Warhammer has a similar problem to star wars; insofar as George Lucas openly intended it to expose kids to the shit he was into, which was drag racing, spaghetti westerns, WW2 and kurosawa movies; but instead 40 years later you've got retards arguing pedantically over glubb shitto lore and whether something is "legends" or not. Similarly, 40k was just supposed to be a humorous bootleg board game drawing inspiration from popular scifi of the time like dune and canticle for lebowitz; but 40 years later youve got retards splitting hairs over whether grand master romulus primus could beat demon price oshikuru as if any of this flavor text shit was meant to be taken so seriously. Idk what the exact misstep was in either case, whether they gave their audience too much credit or something, but its clear that the ball was dropped by either the authors in question or a generation of parents.

Theres a BIG disconnect between the 40k fandom, the people who play the game casually, and the people who play the game regularly.

The "fans" are full of glorp shitto powerscalers who basically read the wiki and listen to whatever drivel ""lore"" youtubers put out, and may own a shittily painted model or two, but other than that dont actuallty engage in the hobby out of fear.

The casuals are basically just more advanced ""fans"", but actually do play the game at times. These people are usually the mega autismos that you think about when you think of a 40k player. My local store has these specimens, and all they really do is hang around the store all day and yap about how great their army is, despite not knowing any of the rules and taking 12 hours to play one game.

The regulars on the other hand I've found are usually better adjusted nerds who what to banter and throw dice around, most of them are dads who have been doing this for 20+ years and just want to get away from the wife and kids for a few hours. Often these people are insanely good too.
>>
Honestly the Imperial Guard is pretty fuckin' useless. They're basically just good for catching bullets with their faces, and their track record whenever they don't have Space Marines to do the heavy lifting around is pretty poor. Vraks was a pretty minor siege with a small force of tens of millions of guardsmen, and it was also basically a massive fuckup that completely drained the munitions stockpiles they were fighting to capture in the first place, lasted 17 years when it could have been ended in weeks, resulted in the HVT they were after escaping and becoming a fucking daemon prince, and completely destroy the hive city in question, and they STILL needed the Space Marines to win the day for them.

Then you have something like the Canis Salient, where, because it's Guardsmen fighting without Space Marines, you have hundreds of billions of Guardsmen casualties with no progress made on the front against a minor xeno faction. That's how the Guard fights when they don't have Space Marines. They lose hundreds of billions and don't even move the frontline forward. They are meat shields, nothing more.
>>
>>65393088
see this is a classic case of warhammer's lore mission creeping its' way into grimderp territory
the imperial guard is the single most important think the imperium has after food and space travel. the sheer number of worlds needing defending vs the sheer number of threats simultaneously attacking the imperium means that the space marines who number in the tens of thousands at the highest estimate cannot possible hope to be the solution. so logically the only thing that explains the imperium still defending itself is the guard holding the line, which is the most reasonable assumption to make, just like how in real life navy seals don't win (land) wars but grunts do. however, because muh spess muhreens make the most money and attract the most attention, every book, series and animated short just HAS to show the guard constantly eating shit whilst space marines singlehandedly save the day. the truth is that without space marines, the imperium might lose in a few centuries, but without the guard, the imperium would lose in a week.
>>
>>65393088
Space marines sell the most minis and the narrative reflects this. GW pushes marines as the only ones that get shit done because that's what the majority of their customers buy. I don't like it either but that's reality.
>>
>>65393107
*thing
>>
>>65393107
>means that the space marines who number in the tens of thousands at the highest estimate
There's an estimated 1 million Space Marines usually, probably higher now that the nu-marines were unveiled by Cawl.

>but without the guard, the imperium would lose in a week.
Sure they might lose quickly but that doesn't mean the Guard is actually any good. The whole 'eating bullets with their faces' thing is still true, it's just slowing down the enemy as they do it. The Guard doesn't really win, they just lose more slowly by throwing more bodies at the problem.
>>
>>65393118
cool, you can feel that way because you read x y z novel or watched an sfm where space marines save the day, but ultimately the guard is far more important than the space marines ever will be. I find them far more compelling if anything considering the vast majority of them are unmodified humans and yet still perfectly ready to stand against the worst horrors the universe has to offer
>There's an estimated 1 million Space Marines usually, probably higher now that the nu-marines were unveiled by Cawl.
that's still a comically small number. because immortal stuff tends to be quite boring, most 40k media has made it abundantly clear that individual space marines can in fact be killed by opponents which don't seem to come up that rarely. if we take the "1 million worlds" estimate at face value that means that at any given time you could only ever have 1 space marine on each planet as opposed to billions of guardsmen each.
>>
>>65393107
space marines aren't navy seals or the equivilant thereof.
>>
>>65393131
They kind of are post codex astartes, which Bobby did on purpose so another Horus Heresy couldn't happen. Remember, the imperium being a bureaucratic nightmare is by design, it's a not a bug, it's a feature.
>>
>>65393131
then what are they? they make a lot of sense in the crusade era when you had way more of them than we do in the 41st millenium and they basically acted as the core of the emperor's military. present day 40k, space marines strike me as an almost 1:1 allegory of special forces in that they often have specialised capabilities which their chapter is dedicated to e.g. grey knights being counter chaos specialists, usually operate in small teams spread out across many different locations (with some exceptions obviously and the instances where chapters go on a crusade all together), are very often depicted doing green beret type stuff where they go and take a leading position as a force multiplier for a local militia force, or the astartes scenario where they do a beheading strike on some kind of rebel faction with a small strike team etc etc. they've 100000% turned into a special forces equivalent. mind you I know rogue trader era space marines weren't like this but present day they are.
>>
The biggest travesty of 12th Edition before the lasgun "revision" are the new combat helmets the Cadians wear. They literally look thinner like M1 WW2 helmet and designed to not stop a bullet. I thought those were like new PDF forces at first.

They are a knight allegory and a British organized crime allegory.
1) the empire used to be better and more sophisticated and now it's fallen, 2) the empire is a crazy class system and each tier has its own brand of dystopian security and oppression troopers, 3) marines are a historical anachronism which don't truly fulfill any needed role but exist out of historical legacies permitted by the elites to be quick-reaction troops because they already exist and will never be let near anywhere important (like Terra).
>>
>>65393146
The idea of what special forces are has changed with time. I won't deny that SM's have been heavily influenced by this change, but there's a lot of differences still.

Space Marines are special forces but they're direct action, intensive combat specialists. A SEAL team is not built to function in the enviroments that SM's do. Space Marines can feasibly be assigned to hold a critical sector of territory against oncoming assaults, which would be a huge waste of SEALs and is not what they're made for at all. They can (and very frequently do) act as frontal/orbital breakthrough troops as well, which is something that SEALs are completely incapable of. They get assigned to hot-zones to shore up failing lines, which SEALS are also completely incapable of. Etc.

They function more like elite airborne units (shared with Scions) with more durability and heavy firepower than they do Meal Team; they just also possess some of the small team capabilities that we now expect of modern SF at the same time.
>>
>>65393233
The Knight allegory that the other anon used is actually an extremely good one that I'll probably use in the future, actually. Wish I saw that before I hit post. Not sure how much I agree on the other parts though.
>>
>>65393233
Marines are more elite infantry, kind of like Paratroopers or Rangers.

Custodes are the ones who are the real SEAL and Green Beret equivalent, where you have like 15 dudes and a support unit, get in, get out and done in 20 minutes using gear that nobody has seen in 10 millennia.

The thing is space marines show up even in minor conflicts, a lot. Like, even in campaigns where only tens of thousands of guardsmen are involved, the Space Marines will still be there.

The Guard is important sure, but let’s not kid ourselves, they don’t win battles, they hold the line until the Space Marines can show up to win it for them.

It's been tried, and it sucked for the Austro-Hungarians who tried it. You'd probably have to designate a shared language - for the EU probably English (as it's the most widely spoken second language, and most European militaries have at least some inbuilt training for it due to NATO), but it would still be a clusterfuck, and just knowing the EU they'd be debating which language to use as their primary military language for decades.

Anyone who's set foot in a game store or been in an ass crack compilation at a gw tournament is definitionally a turbo sperg. The only normies and vast majority of the hobby look at the plastic men with understanding but mild derision while playing the last 20 years of warhammer TripleB videogames. The only thing that's ever kept GW afloat and they'll forever resent it is videogame licensing. Space marine 2 and the total war titles have more monetary and fan effect than a tabletop edition rollout. Then comes the books, media, etc. with the lorefagging you hate as an actual card carrying autistic, while distant last is competitive play of the modern edition "wargame"

I'd assume he means knight in the historical context where a knight as a military/societal rank could be anything from a field commander to the head of a cavalry charge or center of an infantry line or castle commander or regional governor or picket screener or cavalry scout or sea pirate depending on military need and personal want.

Warhammer fantasy did come first (with no direct space marine parallel, unlike in age of goymar) where it's cracked named character models in the empire did or could fit many roles in the lorefluff and wargame rules. Take your electorcount and call him primarch/chapter master and you see where the structure arises from.

fair point, I apologise for calling you autistic as an insult. as it happens I would stand by space marines (depending on the chapter) more or less ending up as an amalgam of present day special forces by the time of the 41st millenium in terms of their battlefield role, although I think the "knight" metaphor actually functions well in describing their place in the power structure of the imperium. It depends heavily on the unit though - stuff like the blood angels or the black templars don't have much of a real military equivalent given their focus is more on rule of cool shit.

What about chaos marines? what are they?

If an EU army ever became a thing, the first thing they would do is standardize equipment, TTP's and SOP's. The real problem for them wouldn't be that but instead it would be where they plan on getting all of the money and oil from. The EU has been a vassal state to the US since the end of WWII. Without any US support, Europe would fold into a third world region of broken states.
