Which shield shape is the best?
>>65393089>Wankel>Not a dorito shapeYou had one job.
>>65393089Kite, because it looks cool
>>65393089Coffin, because that's metal as fuck.
>>65393089>2026AD>not embracing the WAR DOOR to protect your DOOR SHAPED bodytop pleb
>>65393089depends on the use
>>65393089So the thought just occurred to me thinking about the smart gun from Aliens. What if you had a cam arm that you can have hold the shield so you can grab and move it around with ease.
>>65393089Wider Celtic. Sorta like Achilles' shield in Troy.
>>65393089If it's for jousting, picrel is the best.If it's for something else: It depend. Are you fighting alone? In a rank? With a spear? A sword? An axe? On foot? On a horse? With a lance? Against what? Bullets? Arrows? Melee weapons?
>>65393089Human
>>65393089Dual war door.
Buckler because I'm too lazy to carry a big shield everywhere or deal with carrying it in tight spaces.Worst shield: lantern
>>65393089Scutum. It means I have friends.
>>65393089Pic related for maximum lower limb coverage, but loses some protective quality in cold climes.
>>65393435The Scrutum pattern shield
>>65393133>with your shield or on it!>coffinLegit.
>>65393089>No pavise The answer is pavise. Best buckler? Also pavise.
dueling shield
>>65393473The man is correct >>65393478Close second.
>>65393089I have a soft spot for the scrotum shield.
>>65393089>ShieldsPussies.
>>65393089Depends on what you're doing. -Kite was good for cavalry since it covers your leg but doesn't interfere with riding. -Celtic is good for spear formations with that little spear cutout. -Bucklers are excellent for duels and personal defense. The term swashbuckler? It mentions bucklers by name. -Coffin is good for...well anon puts it better than me>>65393133
>>65393478Love how non-chalant they are in the ye olde tapestry arts.>I ain't even mad
>>65393089Scutum is best for pure defense as it allows the blows to glance away without requiring force from the shield holder. Especially good against thrusted spears, though probably not as good against thrown ones due to force and weight required to lift it and hold at an angle.
Heater for war, Buckler for duel. Both were basically the final form for shields before they became obsolete.
>>65393089Kite
>>65393089Scrotum.
>>65395267SHIELDS AIN'T OBSOLETE CUHhttps://surplus.botach.com/protech-intruder-hs-tactical-shield-with-viewport-police-trade/
>>65393089Better armor and mobility. Otherwise, scutum because me 'n the boys are about to wreck something.
>>65394364Those cutouts aren't actually something you'd stick a spear through unless you REALLY liked losing fights. It essentially reduces your selection of angles and targets to nothing and makes it so even a complete incompetent can easily block you while also making it very easy to get control over the spear.
>>65395656Hould be relabled.>POEPOE
>>65393089depends on what you are doing with it.
For me it's the Hungarian Shield
>>65394230simpletons go "hurr durr what if knights vs samurai!?" and not Landsknecht with arquebuses and halberds vs samurai with arquebuses and naginata, which would make them contemporary
>>65396222One on one fights maybe but the cutout is for formation fighting.
>>65396437Japanese loseSome Japanese ronin tried raiding the Philippines once and got dabbed on hard by local force of Spanish troops.>which would make them contemporarySamurai have been around for a while. There's plenty of overlap between them and knights. Also knights would win in every era.
>>65397421NtA. I think his issue is when those pop-history outlets pit a 16/17th century samurai against a 14/15th century knight - the military realities of those time periods were vastly different.
>>65397410It's not. The same problem occurs, and more to the point, cents didn't really DO formations. Aside from the helvetti, virtually virtually every celt, from he Celtic invasion of greece to the Irish in 1200ad, is recorded as fighting without much order, as individuals, and relying on the shock of their initial charge and individual skill to carry fights. That or throwing shit at you in the case of the Irish.
>>65394364>Celtic is good for spear formations with that little spear cutout. It's not. You want a round shield for spear formations ~t. Spearfag
>>65393089Am I retarded? My brain somehow translated 'shield' into 'ship' so i was trying to process ship hulls that used the shapes in OP.
>>65393089Ladies first
>>65398113you have to be a fat greenskin to use those as shields.
>>65397690>>65394364>>65396222Here's the confusing thing; that design isn't actually Celtic! Celt shields were basically ovoid or clipped ovoids (pic related). There was a Greek shield (the dipylon) made of wicker and hide that was shaped like that, the shape obviously didn't last when the Greeks started making wooden shields.
>>65393089pavise while standing 1/4 of a mile behind the fighting.
>>65399937The pelte also had a big cut-out in it, giving it its crescent shape.
>>65399983>tfw you can't tell if the thumbnail is real or a screenshot from [lolspoilers]Floris[/don'tworkon/k/]
>>65394230How did they go from this to that?(Yes i know it's Anglo-Saxon and not Continental Germs but their gear is more or less the same)
>>65401777Sutton Hoo was at it latest around 635; the Landsknects started showing up around 1470. That's a span of 830 years of innovation in metallurgy and warfare or so; it's sort of like asking how we got from pike & shot to cruise missles.
>>65393089what was the point of having shields taper at one end? just the weight savings?
>>65397421>Some Japanese ronin tried raiding the Philippines once and got dabbed on hard by local force of Spanish troops. Please stop repeating this bullshitIt's a spanish nationalist bullshit invention from the 90s
>>65401837No i mean how did they go from looking reasonable to wacky jester dudes?
>>65402290>Sutton Hoo>Looking reasonable Do you not see the eyebrows and moustache painstakingly shaped on the helmet? Also, one is a king and the other is a mercenary. Why would they be dressed the same?
>>65402497Okay, now you're just being obtuse for the fun of it. I'm specifically talking about the clothing!
>>65402533NtAThe fashion of the Landsknechte was inspired by that of the swiss mercenaries of the late 15th century of the times of the Burgundian Wars. There the victorious swiss captured many fine garments and used those to stich up their own clothing - thus the typical style of slashed clothing was born (the slashes allow one to show off the inner linings and those were sometimes made of a high quality material). This fashion then took off in general in Europe but for the Landsknechte three important factors came along too: firstly they had (for the times) a good and steady wage that got supplemented with the gains from looting, secondly they had few avenues to spend their income as they were always on the move and retirement wasn't an option for many and thirdly they were exempt from the sumptuary laws by an imperial decree. Take those three factors together and you get a social class of soldiers who demonstrate their wealth visibly through their exaggerated clothing. In short: Landsknecht fashion was the fashion of the 15th century that got strongly exaggerated to show off their relative (and often short lived) wealth.
>>65397690This is false, the Celts largely fought in close ranks just like everyone else.
>>65401914Like many things, it depends. In the case of the kite shield, it's covering your leading leg during a time where greaves weren't being used anymore (Romans were the only guys making them; they were out of the area). In the case of heaters, yeah, it's weight savings more or less (the shape probably helps a little not getting in the way while mounted too).
