Cundy, DFC) dropped 18 35lb A/S bombs on an initial attack run (the first use of this new weapon), then followed up with four depth charges. Survivors were seen in the water after U-628 sank, but none were rescued. Despite flak hits to a fuel tank and the fin, rudder and starboard wing, the aircraft returned to St. Eval to make a safe landing.

All it takes is one leak in the wrong compartment or any two compartments.
Also destroyers were a lot faster than U-boats so running wasn't an option like it is for nuke subs.
>>
>>65398555
rolling
>>
While the diving depth of a submarine might seem immense, in human terms, it is akin to submerging to a depth roughly equal to one's own height—though U-boats were capable of diving significantly deeper than others.
>>
>>65401457
Once a Uboat was spotted by a destroyer within a couple of km it was basically game over. They were faster than you, even at surface depth, they knew how deep you could dive, roughly how much oxygen you'd have after a dive and even early war before SONAR they would hear your engines running and could triangulate your position if you tried to get away while submerged using hydrophones.

Depth charges were shit compared to later AWS weapons like hedgehog rockets because they required a lot of guesswork and trial and error before finally sinking an enemy sub. Also a failed depth charge would render hydrophones and rudimentary SONAR useless for short time allowing the submarine to escape while still submerged.

So it had the snorting bull emblem, sank two ships in its career, took part in 6 wolfpacks, survived one aircraft attack unharmed and was sunk with all hands off the coast of Scotland on 14th March 1945, meaning she was sunk just 55 days before VE day.

Didn't achieve much in a 2 year career
