They were faster than you, even at surface depth, they knew how deep you could dive, roughly how much oxygen you'd have after a dive and even early war before SONAR they would hear your engines running and could triangulate your position if you tried to get away while submerged using hydrophones. Depth charges were shit compared to later AWS weapons like hedgehog rockets because they required a lot of guesswork and trial and error before finally sinking an enemy sub. Also a failed depth charge would render hydrophones and rudimentary SONAR useless for short time allowing the submarine to escape while still submerged.
