One of the very first truly viable self-loading pistols. 7.63 Mauser is itself a pretty potent cartridge, especially for its day, so pair that with the stock attachment and it's a handy little carbine. It has its claim to fame for a reason, to say nothing of its iconic look and media history.That said, it's very much a 19th Century design, and it awkward as hell to shoot. I still love the hell out them though.

>>65400516The C96 is actually severely underrated, partly because its thought of as a kinda weird pistol, when its actually the first successful compact repeating carbine, or basically a PDW/proto SMG. European armies thought of handguns as something officers wear but hopefully never have to use, so for that application the C96 looks big and clunky and far from ideal. Since the concept of modern firearms was pretty new in China, the Chinese correctly identified the C96 as a different category of weapon compared to small pistols, and used them like light carbines for shock infantry (pic related), with chest rig full of stripper clips, which sidesteps one of the main problems with early pistols and SMGs, which is that magazines were not very reliable, and were usually not made in great enough numbers to issue more than one or two per weapon. The C96 could have been truly great if they ditched the wooden stock-holster idea for a simple folding stock, and made them with 20 round fixed magazines inside a more ergonomic foregrip. Reloading with two 10-round stripper clips is still not ideal, but you could do an emergency reload with only one if you needed to.
