What exactly is the purpose of .45? Why would I get .45 over 9mm or 10mm? I’m about to buy another stribog and I can’t figure why I’d get the .45 over the 10mm

If you want to suppress the gun, then that caliber is better than the other two you mentioned.

That particular 9mm loading is marginally quieter than .45 but does not hit as hard as .45 ACP.

Euros made the 9mm and Americans made the 45 ACP. That's really the difference. NATO standardization tended to lean towards 9mm since there was so much 9mm ammo left after WW2 and many European states were adopting it. A lot of people like the 45 ACP and it still has it's supporters, so it never went away.

In the end, people have endlessly tried to come up with the best semi-auto cartridge for handguns, and it's just led to ANOTHER new round being produced with its supporters and detractors.

I hate that xcfd faggot, but this comic applies perfectly.

The US wanted to go to 9mm after the WWII too. They really liked the P38 and asked for companies to give them a light, 9mm, DASA pistol. S&W replied with the Model 39, but post war budget reductions and the massive pile of M1911A1s sitting next to a similarly massive pile of .45ACP meant the program got scrapped pretty quickly.

Making 9mm the NATO standard wasn't an American concession the the Europeans so much as an acknowledgement that the US would move to 9mm once their M1911s were finally due for replacement.

Because 300gr at 700fps suppressed from an autoloading rifle versus steel is the number one most fun you can have at close range and with new shooters

My Stribog handles 45 Super and that makes the 10mm a hard pass.

The .45 ACP was created because the army wanted a cartridge that had similar ballistics to the old .45 Schofield cartridge that had been adopted in the latter 19th century. The .45 cartridge was replaced with a modern .38 cartridge as the Army started to try and modernize, but the .38 they chose was less than stellar while being adopted alongside a new, underwhelming double-action pistol (The Colt Double-Action Army/1892).

.38 Long Colt wasn't stunningly weak for the time, but the Philippines was just the worst possible case for an underwhelming handgun cartridge. In europe it would've sat comfortably among 8mm Ordnance, 7.62x38R, or any number of similar cartridges.

>.38 Long Colt wasn't stunningly weak for the time
I don't think it helped that it was a cartridge designed for black powder right as that was going by the wayside in favor of smokeless, and the fact that even among revolver rounds .38 special ate it's lunch almost immediately makes it sound to me like everyone wanted a little bit more zing from their handgun anyway. Then comes along .45 acp that can sling double the joules from an autoloading pistol and no one looked back.

I think it's important to note that the .45 vs. 9 debate started LONG before effective and reliable hollow points were available. The argument for punching a bigger hole really meant something for 70 or 80 years but in 2026 it's not a valid point.

I love .45 for the nostalgia and fun factor, but it doesn't win any serious debates in my book.
>>
>>65410954
45 and 9 will never stop being debated.
If you go with a 40 you can change the barrel out for a 357 SIG and use the same mags. Meanwhile you have a back up gun within the same gun.

>>
There is a much larger variety of guns chambered in .45, so if you want to standardize your collection on just a few cartridges, .45 makes more sense. If you're just starting out or stocking a wide variety of calibers doesn't bother you, get whatever you like.

no you and your ilk are actually just drooling retarded who believe it works that way, ''stopping power'' of a single shot is not a scientific thing and the data on that has been clear since crime statistics were loosely put together in the 1930s. a fucking bank robber was shot directly in the abdomen by a .45 and several shotgun pellets and still managed to squeak out and kill 2 more people.

real ''stopping power'' comes from immobilizing limbs by shot volume, not your gay fucking bullet chode measuring contest.

>>
>>65410954
The .45 ACP was designed after real life combat. The 9mm was designed after some engineers said "what if we made the "perfect" round?" And the 9mm became widespread because the lowest common denominator is the deciding factor for bureaucracy. The 9mm was a catastrophic failure in handgun design, only cope and cost has kept it alive.

Yeah. But there are many, MANY more accounts of people taking multiple 9mm rounds and continuing to be a threat, to the point where an entire training regimen (Mozambique drill/failure to stop) had to be created in order to address this.
>muh hollow points
Which bizarrely never effects ANY OTHER pistol round, it's just the 9mm that gained orders of magnitude more effectiveness, and this also didn't apply to .45/.40/10mm.

I’ll tell you my reason: handgun rounds simply do not cause the same wounding effects as rifle rounds, unless by “handgun round” we mean hot .357 from a comically long barrel or some fringe case like that. Because they do not wound in the same way rifles do (e.g. extreme velocity causing catastrophic fragmentation or tissue displacement that exceeds its elasticity), handgun cartridge effectiveness, PER SUCCESSFUL HIT mind you, boils down purely to:
>penetration to or past vital/structural organ depth (in other words, baseline ability to seriously harm the target at all)
and
>wound channel diameter (in other words, the probability that a theoretically “good shot” will indeed be a severely, immediately damaging shot by virtue of an important structure happening to lie within the channel)
The first criterion is a simple matter of “is X depth sufficient for this person/animal/barrier”, whereas the second is more of a gradient where no value is TOO small, but larger is better. Now, that being said, remember that the primacy of these two criteria is within the paradigm of
>PER SUCCESSFUL HIT.
There are, of course, other practical considerations like recoil, magazine capacity, gun model offerings, ammunition market availability, and legality. None of those are particularly decisive for me, so a high quality .45 pistol is better than a 10mm for my main use case of animal defense because properly selected loads of .45 ACP +P (which has a somewhat more forgiving recoil impulse than 10mm) has been decisively shown to make a wider permanent wound channel to a depth that is more than sufficient for any realistic threat innawoods. The most common, cheap .45 loads are also naturally subsonic, which is great fun. Further, the soul of John Moses Browning is more powerful than the soul of Jeff Cooper, and they don’t make the USP in 10mm.

>>65412609
You’re telling me you’d pick 45 over 10mm for a bear? No shot
>>
>>65413054
Yes, .45 ACP +p is better for animal defense because the advantages of 10mm (flatter trajectory, higher capacity, better barrier penetration) do not mean much for that purpose. It’s not realistic to prepare to engage an animal for self defense at 50+ meters, to need to shoot it through cover, or to have an extended battle with multiple of them. “Energy dump” does not exist for handgun rounds, which damage an animal simply by making the widest, deepest hole through it. A properly selected .45 round will make a very deep hole, and a wider one, than 10mm. Further, it’s a bit more shootable. Here’s a professional ammo manufacturer and avid dangerous game hunter saying pretty much the same thing: https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=-ybokbp4BuA&pp=iggCQAE%3D&ra=m
>>
>>65413532
10mm has much better penetration than 45 which is what you’d need for a bear
>>
>>65410954
Well, being a little heavier and going a little slower speaks to the american soul.
>>
>>65413543
>t. did not watch the video or ever think to ask whether the zillion inches of gelatin beloved by 10mmlets provides a meaningful analogue to a bear of finite dimensions
As I said, perhaps if you need to shoot a bear who is taking cover and shooting back at you then that’s an important difference, but hardcast .45 ACP +p, let alone .45 Super, is capable of crushing all the way through a bear under realistic self-defense conditions, and on the way it has a slightly better chance of hitting something critical than 10mm. Some penetration tests have even suggested that certain .45 Super loads penetrate better than 10mm, but in fairness that’s a bit of goalpost moving by me since my initial statements were about .45 ACP +p.
>>
>>65413543
Tbh if you’re backpacking in bear country then carrying bear mace is a better option than a sidearm. It will incapacitate/deter a bear more efficiently than any hand gun and you don’t need to worry about accuracy, which is crucial when an 800lb grizzly is bearing down on you.

>but the Philippines was just the worst possible case for an underwhelming, obsolete firearm.
It didn't help that the US was also still extremely autistic about not letting soldiers use ammo.
>>
>>65411718
A subsonic round in a silence self-defense platform seems like a use case. It's not like ammo capacity is a factor in civilian self-defense.
>>
>>65413618
No way. I have been downwind of bear spray and I would never trust it not to debilitate my vision when used up close in unfavorable conditions. Besides, bear spray is of limited use against humans, who are also a potential threat in the outdoors and can obviously use ranged weapons of their own. Much better to have a firearm.
>>
>>65410954
>What exactly is the purpose of .45?
To shoot things, silly.
>How do I minmax?
.45 will penetrate better against softer, thicker material due to weight. 9mm can penetrate a bit better against harder, thinner material due to more concentrated force over surface area. 10mm would generally outdo 9mm on that due to more power.
.45 is naturally subsonic but suppressors won't work quite as well because bigger hole means faster expulsion of gas, so there's give and take vs 9mm. 10mm is worse for suppression because it needs velocity to justify its existence.
They all have subtle differences under various circumstances. If it's a range toy use 9mm because it's cheaper. If it's an amulet to give you good dreams of LARPing as a operator pick whatever fits the fantasy.
