This is the Yotsubas, hundreds of boards colonized by trolls. Once it was united under moot, but for the past decade it has been consumed by savage shitposting. Until a new enemy appeared.
Mysterious invaders known as, the Election Tourists. Powerful and ruthless they struck like lightening attacking every thread at once. But they made one big mistake, they attacked MY home board!
Now in the spirit of moot, ancient enemies have reunited, and we're going to take back our website!

Just how demilitarized is "Battle"tech that a Trinary (15 robots + elemental support IIRC) is a world-threatening force? Hundreds of thousands have fought over single cities IRL.
>>
>>65412899

A single 'Mech is an entire invasion force in and of themselves if you use it right. With an all-energy loadout you can effectively fight for months without resupply, and defeat anything but a wholly overwhelming conventional force without any damage within minutes. Also note that said Jade Falcon Trinary is made up of Clan Omnimechs piloted by genetically-engineered Trueborn supersoldiers, which generally eviscerate dozens of regular 'Mechs driven by normal humans, all at once. When you realize a regular 'Mech can technically take on an entire planet and win by itself because of in-universe writer fiat, then make a weapon that turns armies of 'Mechs into the ants being stepped on, well.
>>
>>65412899
Reminder that Clan tech is significantly more advanced than Inner Sphere tech (discounting Lostech but unless you're Comstar you're not fielding that shit in meaningful numbers)
Also reminder that they came down with heavy mechs and aerospace fighters against mainly mediums
>>
>>65412899
It's underpopulated and there's a huge quality>quantity paradigm. Most planets outside the big capitals have populations around the single-digit millions at most, and military hardware that's actually worth jack shit tends to be pretty fucking expensive. IIRC 3025 C-Bill:late 90's US Dollar is like a ~1:10 exchange ratio. Mech pricetags are more comparable with modern-day fighter jets than AFVs, and BT combat vees aren't that much cheaper than similar-sized Mechs.
>>
>>65412921
Addendum: Also the Clanners absolutely did not have the manpower for proper occupations and most of them very quickly figured that out. Their standard "model" became to basically just smash flat the local military, put a garrisson into a small, isolated compound, send down a coupel civilian caste to assess the local economy and then tell the locals that they could do whatever the fuck so long as they kept paying their new taxes on time and didn't cause a ruckus. In quite a few cases the new taxes weren't even as high as what the old management had demanded, too.

The BT universe is skewed to make the table top game work. They have arbitrary rules like not using Space Combat despite having ships that would not be out of place in a 40K system defense fleet and somehow 15 Mechs or even a few dozen Elementals (discount Space Marines but worse in every way) occupying a planet of hundreds of millions.

Don't try to apply logic, logistic or physics to BT, it is somehow worse when it comes to realism than 40k.
>>
>>65412951
>They have arbitrary rules like not using Space Combat
No? Not at all?
>>
>>65412896
It is kind of funny how the Clan that is considered the most hyper aggressive and idiotic is the one with the most known black people.
>>65412899
Battletech had it so that decades prior they were attacking worlds with hundreds of regiments with numbers that way more sense. The writers then seem to get dropped on their head when it comes to the Clans. Granted a lot of worlds they are initially invading have got populations barely in the five digits but when they start attacking regional capitals well a lot of those planets have more people several times in magnitude higher than their all the Clans put together. Even with advanced tech I just don't buy Clans are invading worlds like that with the forces they have at their disposal.
>>
>>65412965
>Battletech had it so that decades prior they were attacking worlds with hundreds of regiments with numbers that way more sense.
early BT was a lot smaller on the size of militaries than it came out to be, so it wasn't so crazy at the time.
>>
>>65412951
>They have arbitrary rules like not using Space Combat
The IS doesn't do Space combat because they have fuck all for space combat beyond aerospace fighters and combat Leopards if they're feeling spicy, the Clans were using their warships right up until Smoked Jaguars did a whoopsie nukesy on civilian populations
>>
>>65412956
It is like dune but without the excuses. They just don't do any form of space combat besides orbital drops at all.

There is no such thing as space combat, planetary defenses or even system monitors in BT. For all intents they have no space faring capability at all besides dropships.

The BT universe makes less sense than 40k or even Dune, even basic shit like satellites don't really exist in BT.

In the BT universe OP's force would be destroyed within a day by a WW2 armored division, it might last 48 hours if it was lucky in WW1.

>>65412965
It simply makes no sense. It makes less sense than Rifts did which basically ended when a huge number of guys who ended up IRL in the military started playing Coalition campaigns and pointed out 'hey the CS are going to slaughter all these dudes and here is how they will do it' due to the ridiculous things the CS can do in Rifts*

*Mega damage and combined arms: don't do it.
>>
>>65412985
>There is no such thing as space comba

>planetary defenses
orbital defenses do exist, yes.
>or even system monitors
dropship and small craft system monitors do.
>even basic shit like satellites don't really exist in BT.
you are horrendously wrong.

i will say that space combat is mostly dropships and aerospace fighters and is often focused just around getting into atmosphere but the idea that it doesn't happen is just false.

warship on warship combat doesn't happen outside of big kerfuffle's, yes, that's correct, and there are worlds with no space defense other than aerospace fighters (if they even have aerospace fighters), but I'm genuinely unsure what makes you think they don't exist?
>>65412899
somerset is not highly populated and feudalism means that some planets really do just flat out flip over to the new guys because they beat the old chief poobhah in a duel.

>>65412981
They deliberately omitted counting anything other than mech line regiments and there are meant to be fuckton of militia, tank and infantry regiments around whenever the writers feel like remembering those should exist.
Even still forces are quite small for what the should be. Rasalhague had just over 200 regiments granted that faction was supposed to have a tiny ass military for its size. If scale that up to other factions you are still talking very small militaries for their respective territory and population.
>>
>>65412951
>Elementals (discount Space Marines but worse in every way)
You take that back. Space Marines don't even have any weapons other than a lascannon that could reasonably hit a jumpjet equipped elemental.
>>
>>65412985

There used to be a lot of space combat in BT, but thanks to the Amaris Civil War, Exodus, and Succession Wars annihilating all the knowhow and infrastructure needed to create combat-capable ships the IS ended up being like >>65412982, and the Clans forgot most of what they knew about space combat because MUH HONOR BATCHALL. I mean the Amaris Civil War was massive space battles left and right, as was shit like the Jihad. IIRC there's sourcebooks on those that include advanced space combat rules.

Problem is you NEVER see this on the tabletop or in vidya because BT revolves around selling little 'Mech models and everything else is subordinated to keeping that gravy train running. It's like 40k.
>>
>>65412985
>They just don't do any form of space combat
They absolutely do, though. Why do you think repeating your false claim will somehow make it not false?

>There is no such thing as space combat,
Flatly incorrect. What do you think WarShips, combat DropShips, ASF etc. are for, exactly?

>planetary defenses
Flatly incorrect. SDS may be rare, btu it absolutely exists.

>or even system monitors
That's what a Pocket WarShip effectively is, only it can piggyback on JumpShips to not be stuck in a singular system forever.

>For all intents they have no space faring capability at all besides dropships.
You mean besides ASF, small craft, Jump Ships, WarShips and various satellties and space stations.

>In the BT universe OP's force would be destroyed within a day by a WW2 armored division
A fucking Mech company would literally one-sidedly overrun and slaughter any WWII armored division. Said division has literally NOTHING that can effectively stop or even just do meaningful damage to a Mech formation in practice, so the only thing they could do is waste a lot of time and lives and probably some ammo if the Mechs don't just go energy-weapons only in response to getting to mow through completely ineffective opposittion.

There's rules for modern-day tank guns in BT. They do exactly ZERO damage against anything using IS-standard armor.

Space combat never stopepd fully. Full-scale WarShips went extinct for a while and remain rare because they're extremely fucking expensive, but literally nobody ever stopped having fights in space and building aeroSPACE fighters, combat DropShips (including assault DropShips, which are literally 100% dedicated space combat plattforms) and assorted things.

Dead since the Reunification War. And also vompletely irrelevant to space combat. Fun fact, even the Ares Conventions stipulations regarding WMDs explicitly on apply on strictly civilian targets and/or within 75,000km of an inhabited planet. It hasn't escaped notice that BattleTech is a setting in which the dominant cultures are almost exclusively European or East Asian. The Successor States are all multi-ethnic, and multicultural as hell below their respective federal levels though, except for the Draconis Combine going full Shogunate/Imperial Japan LARP. Remidner that pic relevant was arguably the living platonic ideal of a Combine samurai.

To a limited degree. They do a lot of internal colonization/population displacement projects, but they seem to do those based on political and economic considerations rather than on the idea of increasing the percentage of Asian-descended people in their realm. Within the Combine, Nordics, Slavs and Irish still exist as distinct population and seemingly maintain their ethnic/criminal ties of loyalty across the stars.

The majority of succ states don't strongly care about what happens below the level of the interstellar ruling class, which is the one being forced to and rated on how well their cosplay performance aligns with official lore standards.

Never mind that only the Capellans eventually got around to no longer subscribing to the idea that humanity forms one unified political body.
>>

>It's an arbitrary figure
do you realise that whether you're arguing the Ares Convention figure is arbitrary, or the Karman line is arbitrary, you've still conceded that it's arbitrary and therefore Norktard's comment stands and therefore your objection does not?
>And, again, that's literally for tossing around
> WMDs only
it's an arbitrary rule regardless of the specific terms i.e. what weapon it covers and what rules it has

NTA, but you're doing a really shitty job of distinguishing Clan rules, Inner Sphere norms, and tabletop conventions.
So, for >>65413196's sake:
>Clan rules
A lot of batshit courtesy of an insane founder, but at its core a fanatic desire to reduce casualties and collateral damage owing to the very resource-strapped nature of their origins. Held together by an honor system and the absolutely awful things that happen to everyone when it breaks down. In a Clan-on-Clan scenario, you might have to fight a fighter duel to earn the right to land troops and fight a 'Mech duel.
>IS norms
Degraded so heavily in the few hundred years leading up to the clans that anything capable of real-ass orbital bombardment was either cinders or far to valuable to risk on the low-grade fuck-fuck games they were playing late in that era. Space combat was largely reduced to landing denial or ambushing JumpShips at the edge of the system as they came out of hyperspace. In the post-Invasion recovery, full-ass fleet battles have become increasingly common again.
>TT Conventions
You can absolutely play all this shit out, but it will take you real-world weeks, so most people just say "fuck it" and slam 4 'Mechs on the table.
>>65413211
>no targeting Jumpships
Because JumpShips are incredibly rare and valuable, and you're way better off either demanding its surrender or boarding it instead of blowing it out of the void.
>or HPGs
Because the phone company owns those, and they will cut your landline if you do.
>>
do people still play megamek or mwo?
>>
>>65413231
MWO still has a few hundred at any given time. MegaMek is the preferred way for the average player without a truly dedicated play group to experience the higher end of the rules spectrum.
>>

>there's also the famous "no targeting Jumpships or recharge stations or HPGs"

The best part of battletech is that you can just take a black guy, put him in a uniform that looks straight out of sharpe and say he's a general in the free worlds league, or chuck an asian dude into a suit of plate armor, have him speak with a posh british accent and call him a Davion. Battletech does/did/could do diversity in the best way possible, but not diluting it into a weird ass, melting pot muddled bullshit we see in the real world, but a jovial celebration of an exaggerated aspect of those cultures. Yes, I do want my Samurai black and afro'd and yes, I do want my Rasalhague viking swedish speakers to very clearly be arabic, because it's so much funnier that way. >most planets are earth-like with sub-billion populations where you can live a comfy 20th century townie life but with superior healthcare
What seems to be the case is that your regular planet is a good bit colder and dryer than Earth and water scarcity is the norm. If you end up on a Earth-like water world, you gotta deal with allergies and local wild life either avoiding you because you're completely outside of their frame of reference or having zero respect for you. Even if eating you kills them due to biochemical incompatibilities, plenty of them will still give it a shot. So continent-wide anti-predator drive hunts will be regular events of your life, meaning your nice townie life is likely only on par with the libertarian town that got wrecked by bears.

Planetary economic growth is slow, capital is expensive and the interstellar economy is largely monopolized by the armed merchants that went on to form the ruling Houses. It's really hard to get off the treadmill and make progress, unless you voluntarily join up with the weirdo cosplayers from outer space, that is. At the ground level, BT is a somewhat more liberal Crest of Stars, really, but with people randomly being forced to participate in re-enactments of Mazinger Z.

Not very.
1. Populations on most planets haven't really recovered from the holocaust that was the 1st secession war aka "The thought of resistance will be met with sustained use of strategic weapons" war.
2. The industrial base likewise has not recovered so most local garrisons are centralized at a world's capital and a small fleet of hetzers, Quick Cell's cheapest rolling coffin, and a battalion of motorized infantry are the best they can sustain maybe a lance or two of mechs on a rich world.
3. Clans developed a culture that would attempt to preserve the precious few resources they fled the inner sphere with. Instead of the classic great house repose of judicious deployment of nuclear weapons on any sign of resistance they would stage a proxy fight with limited numbers (The fewer you bid the more capable and thus honorable you appear) to spare massive collateral damage and loss of life. The inner sphere did not respect this
Bidding a Trinary is more like challenging a local force to a duel then an actual invasion force.

The Kuritas and the Canopians socially and/or legally maintain heterosexual gender differences. The Clans don't do gender as a legal concept, but they do force people to procreate and maintain death games with the winning ticket being... having an infinite number of kids. It's very heterosexual.

The rest of the IS is just naturally hetero as fuck and most women in stable long-term relationships seem to aim for two to three kids, with men having anywhere from three to six.

BT sits easily among the most unabashedly heterosexual Scifi universes.

In vats. Clanners prefer using the Iron Womb over natural procreation. This way you can have children with two genetic mothers. Or fathers. Or possibly both depending on how you recombine the genes.
>>
>>65416508
Lower-caste members have mandatory partners and breeding quotas, but Clan society puts no upper limits on how many kids people can have.
Clanners have no personal preferences regarding breeding as there is no personal choice involved. Politically, being vat-born is preferable, but the gene parents have no say in the process and no personal or social relation with their descendants beyond shared caste membership. If your kids manage to kill you, that's even better. Goes to show that your strong stock clearly managed to produce warriors superior to yourself.

>>

>>
>>65416575
Best way to describe it would be Minimum Viable Product.

Its a short range delayed punch attack that you can upgrade the fists or melee weapons on mechs that have melee weapons that all function the exact same just with slightly different damage stats. So whether it is a sword, hatchet or claw they all swing the exact same way. In theory it could be quite powerful but in reality due to mission design and fact AI can punch back you're just trading damage that you would be better off avoiding.

They introduced the Hatchetman to showcase which I get is iconic but is not a really good mech and I think everyone would rather have had the Axman. They also introduced a bunch of non canon variants of various mechs which in true PGI fashion they managed to make as dogshit as humanly possible. Not even kidding that these make the game easier as they trade so much for a melee weapon they will never be able to get into range to use. There's none that I saw that had MASC or Superchargers and thanks to jump jets being hot garbage there is zero way to close distance so all the melee mechs end up being typically slow and undergunned giving you zero reason to want to use them. They didn't even think about including TSM that's how half assed this DLC was.
>>

To be fair BT fiction was never good.

>>
>>65416803
>that doesn't seem like much of a bet for comstar
they were in a situation where if they threw the ComGuard at the Clans they might delay the Clans a year or two
the Tukayyid Trial allowed them to convert that into fifteen years instead
when you're that desperate, time is always your ally. lots of things can happen in fifteen years, and canonically did
>>
>>65416703
And the breeding by clanners is overwhelmingly artificial.
>>
>>65416803
The war was looking to be a drag out loss for the IS anyway. From ComStar's perspective the Clans winning means they're going to fall to infighting as none of them are going to accept anything less than sole claim to Earth while the Clans losing means the IS has 15 years to recover while the Clans now have to fully consolidate their holdings to remain relevant.
>>
>>65416803
Yes, it was a trap, since Clanners are not as heavy-handed as IS when it comes to rejuvenation medicine.
Clan mech pilots are expected to tender their resignations from frontline service after 20-25 years of service (if they don't get killed in duels in the meantime). So most of the experienced Clan pilots would've aged out by the time the truce expired.

None of these would have any chance of working. All of them are either very low velocity (plasma weapons, literally sub
sonic lol), very low range (volkite, even shorter range than bolters) or both (grenades). Elementals armed with lasers, machineguns or AP gauss have a range of comfortably more than a kilometer against a target as poorly armored as a Space Marine, and they move too fast to be targetted at that range by anything Space Marines have other than lascannons.

the lore is silly in many respects and has seen so more writers and IP holders than a used up slut on the vegas strip. they all had different ideas of what battletech "should" be at some point.
the stories are pretty good but the technology and army scale have never been done quite right. wet ammunition storage and blowout panels were apparently lost technology until the year 2452 and still isn't standard technology on every innersphere battlemech in the year of our lord Blake in 3151.
>>
>>65419208
>wet ammunition storage and blowout panels were apparently lost technology until the year

IRL CASE existed, the CASE used in-universe is an upgraded version. I don't think it's explained how it works but you could probably handwave it away as being a function of BT armor that it's harder to do.

One of the oldest examples of so-called “lost” technologies, CASE (as we
know it today) actually predates the Star League by nearly a hundred years.
Indeed, its earliest progenitors can be traced back even farther. Developed
as a damage-control technology in the event of catastrophic internal explo
sions, CASE—then as now—became an intrinsic part of the armor system
on BattleMechs, Combat Vehicles and fighters, intended to save crews and
machines for later salvage. When heat or damage triggers an ammunition
explosion in a CASE-protected location, specially designed blow-away
panels direct the force of the explosion outward, through the rear of the
machine. Though any remaining internal structure in the eff ected section
is typically damaged in these blasts, CASE has spared many a machine that
once would have been fully consumed by an internal explosion.
Originally kept tightly controlled by the Terran Hegemony (along with
many of their vital technologies), CASE has proliferated among armorers
across the Inner Sphere since its recovery, and even has been adapted
for non-military equipment (as a guard against the eff ects of freak fuel
tank explosions and the like). The Clans, of course, have also retained this
technology, but have refi ned it so well that theirs is completely seam
less and weightless by Inner Sphere standards. Nevertheless, even Clan
CASE remains incompatible with the compact architecture of ProtoMech
designs, where even a redirected internal explosion would have catastrophic effects on the machines and their pilots.

>Anon is correct: only the Warriors (maybe Scientists?) are vatborn. The worker class are almost entirely freebirth, or they're Warriors who failed to pass muster during training and got dummied out, which is a gigantic scarlet letter for any vatborn.
This isn't correct. For non-warrior caste, impregnation can be natural but the children are removed carried to term in iron wombs. The entire reason they used iron wombs, originally a technology for very premature babies, for breeding in clan space was to rapidly grow their population by allowing women to have multiple children in quick successful without the risks to their health or loss of productivity associated with many rapid pregnancies. Women carrying children to term is super taboo in clan society because it's a selfish and antisocial act by the mother, which is the core reason why freebirth is also taboo.
>>
>>65419290
>they have their own version of Bloodnames

I mean just reading the description of how it works on Sarna the only thing that sounds more technologically complex than blowout panels invented in the 70's is ferro fibrous armored ammunition containers. I can't seem to think of anything suggesting that the propellants used in battletech ammunition are so significantly more powerful than 21st century ones that they would need a material not invented yet to match the performance of 21st century blowout panels.
It's fine if the writers just want mechs to explode. CASE could have just been a standard technology that was invented pre-spaceflight and installed on some mechs and not others, as blowout panels are used in some tanks and not others today. It's silly that it ever became lostech. Just seems like a piece of military technology the writers didn't really understand.
>>
>>65412899
depends on the era, but for a while a surprise nuke on every population or industrial zone of a planet was considered a 'restrained and measured approach', so in some spots a planet might have as much population as a modern state like montana and be considered relatively populous. most places could definitely field some future tanks and APC's, and they can even deal some damage to 'mechs, but most 'mechs are walking armories of truly ludicrous amounts of weaponry for their weight.

most of the really cool stuff is all LosTech though. WarShips which would be capable of deploying multiple DropShips with ease may number less than 500 in total for the whole setting, with all nominally in clan hands. the clans being so goofy and bidding low in combat is probably the only thing that has kept them from roflstomping most places.

still somehow among the more pleasant to live in currently sci-fi settings for your average joe.
>>
>>65419326
I think the easiest explanation is that it just didn't work very well with modern BT armor but BT doesn't use this explanation, so.

tldr Clans didn't get rid of pregnancy via iron wombs, they got rid of family via creches and that's what I mixed up. But also it should definitely be both based on why the source books say they use iron wombs. To be clear:
>For non-warrior caste, impregnation can be natural but the children are removed carried to term in iron wombs.
Is wrong but should be right.
>The entire reason
Is wrong, it's also so they can do test tube babies.
>they used iron wombs, originally a technology for very premature babies, for breeding in clan space was to rapidly grow their population
Is correct but doesn't actually make sense because the other things are incorrect, especially since it literally is only used for the tiniest fraction of their society.
>by allowing women to have multiple children in quick successful <sic succession*> without the risks to their health or loss of productivity associated with many rapid pregnancies.
Is incorrect.
>Women carrying children to term is super taboo in clan society because it's a selfish and antisocial act by the mother, which is the core reason why freebirth is also taboo.
Is incorrect but definitely should be correct.

Boating is already overpowered, the games make it the only reasonable build. This is one of the worst parts of the series, having this big complex mech building system and everyone just makes the same laser boat, because why the fuck not?

Following game logic dictates almost 90% of the canon mech builds are completely dogshit for no reason and actually, everyone should just be nova alpha striking each other off the board in one turn every game.

You mean because the canon mechs only make sense in the context of the ridiculous tabletop rules?
>>
>>65419659
Due to rule changes, many mechs no longer make sense within the rule set (the OGs that suffer from sinks being squirrled away into the engine, SRM2 ones specifically built to run Inferno loads) Many other mechs (mainly Kurita ones) have even been deliberately designed wrong and other mechs ended up the way they are because maths is hard (anything with Re-lasers).

>somehow 15 Mechs or even a few dozen Elementals (discount Space Marines but worse in every way) occupying a planet of hundreds of millions.

>>
>>65419659
I think it actually makes a lot of sense for a combat vehicle to be encouraged to carry multiple kinds of weapons and not solely twelve of the exact same gun. Unfortunately the games give them no purpose and don't reward you for doing so.
Even worse than any of that, it's boring and makes the whole build-a-mech pointless. All mechs are just good energy boats or bad energy boats.
>>65419672
Many early mechs were also shit for no reason even in their own time because the loadouts were based on the art. This is why the shadow hawk sucks dick when it's not supposed to.
Others because they don't playtest experimental tech or anything in tac ops. The stalker II having stacked piloting negatives so it effectively can't get back up if it ever falls over is a big one.

Living legends is a bad example because the elementals are super buffed. They basically load each one of them up with the strength of an entire squad so they can be solo operators. It's purely gameplay concessions to make them relevant by turning them into iron man. The real threat of an elemental to mechs is in their swarm attack, where they all jump on you at once and start tearing you apart with their claws, not pogoing around and shooting.

I mean the games are terrible for this sort of thing in general. The mechs can't even do melee in LL and half the games.

Nah, i just thought it was dumb but everyone else was playing it. We ended up giving each player a budget to make their own mech via the custom rules, i just min/maxed and used 40k Epic minis to represent infantry stands and tanks for the most part, the squat ones were good for getting tiny helicopters.

Those old epic stands were great, once we had a contest at our GW for a Epic starter box where we made tiny 40k boards using the Epic figures instead of the full sized ones. I used a bunch of tiny magnets and a folding metal chess board to make a travel sized 40k board, complete with tiny rulers where all the inch measurements were reduced to 5mm. The terrain was on magnets so they wouldn't move around, the whole thing was about 14 inches square. We had to give them all tiny banners so we could figure out who had which equipment, in 2ed stuff like Wolf Guard has ridiculously complex equipment options.

Some do. Look up Light Rifles.

Also, 'Mech-scale machine guns in-setting are anything automatic up to 29mm or so. One of the most popular machine guns is actually a 20mm vulcan gun.
>>
>>65421674
Machineguns deal no damage to mechs beyond 90m when you use the realistic range rules (whereas other weapons deal damage out to their maximum range but it's reduced).

Most stupid rules in Battletech have a realistic alternative that no one bothers to use because it adds more effort.
>>
>>65421639
Infantry weapons usually only do anything up to 1-2 hexes. Unless he's closing in to BBQ your buns the enemy pilot can usually just... not be there.

>>65423036
>tons of weight that would be more useful as heatsinks or something
with certain builds you can optimise better if you carry both ballistics and
that's why so many Mechs carry the LBX/Gauss + PPC combo, and LBX/Gauss + PPC + MLs; it can output as much as 10 points more damage over all-laser flashbulbs
and crucially, the Gauss build pushes that range further out.

what they really need to do is introduce a replacement class of ballistics that is about 3/4th the weight and crits
there is precedent; LBXs already effectively replaced ACs, until specialty ammo appeared

Unguided LRMs with no minimum range. Apollo fire control makes them less likely to miss. Biggest draw is that they can be swapped in for certain SRM/LRM launchers, giving such 'Mechs an all-range weapon when needed.

>>65424681
MRMs were pretty shitty for the longest time. They had a to-hit penalty, and when you roll 2d6 to hit, it wasn't worth the tonnage or the BV. The new rules buff them, and the Apollo FCS now allows you to use the MRM has an AoE weapon, great for killing infantry and battle armor.
>>
>>65422434
HSL in MWO is an increase in heat generated when you fire multiple of the same weapon beyond a certain limit. Of course it's not going to work if you're only firing a single weapon, that's not what it's designed to counter.
>>
>>65422156
The heat scale/ghost heat was implemented in MWO because weapons shoot center of the crosshair every time and weapons have perfect/instant aim correction. It made boating one type of weapon the braindead best play since you'd never have to adapt to a different lead or firing cadence, and all your damage would impact the exact same spot.

It's not as needed in TT since hit locations are rolled per weapon. Medium lasers and clan LPLs are still monsters when you boat them but you cant just carve a dude's leg off like he's a turkey and the other weapons have stuff like specialty ammo which can help differentiate them.
>>

>>65424681
it's been a while, but ISTR that MRMs (when first introduced*) had shitty stats for the smaller launchers so only the biggest racks were usable
*this is an important caveat because there have been rule updates

>>65424999
>weapons shoot center of the crosshair every time
Mechwarrior vidya should make the CEP bigger
>>
>>65424999
Also because they keep making the games purely focused on fighting other mechs. Of course everyone's in a mech-destroyer build when the only threats are other mechs. And in MW5 at that they only really fight by slowly and predictably approaching you, so there's no variety in targets or tactics.

That vtols will always approach to medium laser reach and then hover around kills the point of a lot of smaller LRMs on mechs, for example. Every gun's a flyswatter at that range.
>>
>>65424999
Sure, but everyone is also saying that the braindead best play in TT is to boat lasers with enough heatsinks to be able to alpha every turn and the rules as-is don't provide a benefit to mixing loadouts then the most obvious solution is to provide diminishing returns for heat management when boating.

no, they don't; they are basically "we only fuck for fun, machines do the childbearing" just as in Brave New World
which is the pinnacle of foid society
>and I'm surprised the clans aren't co-opted by genderslimes more often
the genderslime raison d'etre is mainly a cry for attention from deadbeat losers, and also an excuse as to why they're losers but it's not their fault, ackshually society discriminates against them
the Clans don't have any of that and thus have taken away their discriminated-minority excuse
it's why you still see foids and trannys today whining and screaming about how society apparently still oppresses them, despite female-dominated workplaces, female-dominated divorce courts, female and tranny overrepresentation in media, years and years of Pride Month and pride parades, and AFFIRMATIVE action
because it takes away their excuses for being deadbeat losers, forcing them to confront their real flaws of character

TL;DR you can't LARP as an oppressed minority in a setting where you are not an oppressed minority, and the whole point of your LARP is to be an oppressed minority per se
>>
>>65425186
Okay then, what's your solution to high alpha lasboats and the lack of reason to mix loadouts on the TT?
>>
>>65425051
There's things you can do on TT to mitigate it.
>special anti-laser armor if you're in the right era
>lasers that arent the SPL (maybe micros too?) suck at zapping infantry which opens them up to BA or spotters or field guns if they dont take bodyguards
>plasma, infernos, or flamers can apply heat and make a flashbulb's day a bit more sweaty
The real reason clan LPLs are so annoying is that they have excellent range and a to-hit bonus, which means there's not much that can efficiently engage them in their own range envelope.

The Mlas is just super effecient, but it's still a mid/close weapon so you can play around it if you really try.

>>65425200
All the Clans do is whine, especially the Warrior caste, and no one LARPing as a discriminated class actually requires discrimination in real life or a fictional setting. The actual reason is that LARPing as a Clan Warrior requires a very specific kind of autism that most people aren't willing to commit to.
>>
>>65425216
>It was designed to easily be swapped in for
by which that guy probably meant it has the same crits and tons
in-universe, you're not swapping much because most people just take stock configurations, unless you're driving an OmniMech or FrankenMech

on the tabletop, consensus at the time was that MMLs are superior to MRMs, because of the MRM range bands and the +1 THN
when you're real close, you lose to mass SRMs
the MRM sweet spot is 7-9 hexes. at which point just use medium lasers, objectively the best all-around weapons in the game

so everyone I knew brought MMLs instead of MRMs whenever possible
MRMs are only good for turning former LRM boats into MRM boats, which is why the larger racks were favoured
>>
>>65425205

They're like modern Russia in that they have the non-fuctional remains of an industrial base and lots of old stock to use. They can build replacement parts for old mechs, and can produce some of the smaller or lower quality ones in small numbers, but most mechs are going to be decades or centuries old. Mechs themselves are generally way more effective than their equivalent weight and cost in IFVs and planes. So you combine those two things with a galaxy that was fucked into this state by non-stop industrialized total war, and you end up with a situation where its in everyone's best interest to keep war small and limited. So they practice conflict like the medieval knights did, and agree not to use things like nukes or human waves if they can at all avoid it. This, in turn, leads to most worlds not having much in the way of non-mech ground forces, in the same way medieval armies were mainly a small elite force of knights, and some support elements, rather than the massive armies of infantry that came before and after that era.

I'd suggest reading The Ideal War if you want to get an idea of the situation.

Its probably the best out of all the tabletop wargame settings, but in terms of sci fi, Trek beats it easily with its holodecks and post scarcity society.

They're like the book version of mobile infantry, but without the nukes

troll or retarded?
Ideal War is a Nam parable force-fit into the BT universe, it's barely canon

Simple.
Don’t play with customs.

why is playing as a mercenary so much more fun than picking a faction?

This was true in 3025. By 3050, not so much.

The BT setting is still post-industrial from the perspective of its high point before the Amaris Civil War and First Succession War, it's just been on the upswing rather than the downswing since Helm and the Clan Invasion.

last big update added vectoring to JJs so now they're must use and the best mobility option over masc/sc

vanilla or yaml, Marauder Ii is now even better

Even in Ideal War, which takes place years after the Clan Invasion, that still seems to be the status quo for a lot of the galaxy, even if some parts are better off.

It takes place in 3054 and depicts a backwater insurgency, not a cutting edge major theatre with the latest tech. The 3050 Clan Invasion is the major turning point for IS technology and after that it develops after centuries of being suppressed by the Space AT&T conspiracy that is broken by up the necessity of the invasion.

>Was it a trap?
It was a trap. The whole thing makes more sense if you consider it as two different SLDF successors who have the same motivations for the IS but different methods (like Wardens and Crusaders but more extreme).

Focht's bidding was essentially a shaping operation to funnel the best of the Clans warriors into a single killing field where the Com Guard's better balanced force could kill them, and it worked. So yeah, it was a trap of sorts.
