I have seen the occasional thread every few months revolving around /k/ adjacent movie recommendations, but have any of you watched any of these movies and thought "wow, that was dogshit."
For me personally, the way of the gun was terrible. It is roughly a 120 minute long movie, and it has about 20-30 minutes of actual gun related scenes, which were pretty awesome, but the rest of the movie was dedicated to an uninteresting plot revolving around an annoying pregnant woman that I really wished would have been shot early, and the movie had an incredibly unsatisfying ending.

the way of the gun insists on itself. it's pretentious farthouse schlock repackaged for gun nerds, so they can't see it for what it really is. and they don't even use any cool guns, not one glock, beretta, m4, or ak during the entire film.

The action was good, but it’s so obviously trying too hard to copy Tarantino. The characters don’t have real names and are sort of archetypes, everyone is an asshole and they all speak like snarky film snobs. At least in Tarantino’s case, he got good actors who could make those performances work.

this movie is a complete waste of time. it's basically half a gunfight extended out into an entire movie, so fucking lame. I'll summarize the movie for you: unit enters a town or village for some mission, get ambushed and take cover inside a house, hide there until backup comes to rescue them. then the movie ends. in fact, this film makes the way of the gun look like heat, that's how gay it is.
>>
>>65412978
Heat is just 2 great gunfights in a nearly 3 hour long soap opera. Without looking it up, can anyone actually name any of the characters and not refer to them by the actor's name? Heck I'll settle for the galil guy from the major heist scene, either the character or actor name. Otherwise the movie is a GREAT ASS

28 Days Later writer and a retired Navy SEAL collabed to create one of the most immersive depictions of the GWOT in Iraq.
Yeah I'm thinking it was kino af.
One of the SEALs depicted was concussed so bad he has no memory of the day. So out of all his engagements in Iraq, Mendoza picked this day in Ramadi to recreate as faithfully as possible to give him some idea of what happened.
It's more like Das Boot than Platoon. The whole movie spans a one-day operation for the SEALs as they set up an OP in an Iraqi home that gets besieged.
I am an A24 hater generally, but this is worth a watch. If for nothing else than to see SEALs wearing UCP.

It *is* a comic book movie, it's just that basically nobody has heard of the comic book.
In the original, he's being recruited into a league of villains and they're very blatantly villainous, random rape and murder is part of it somehow. I forget most of it now.
>>
>>65419789
>>hurrdurr extrajudicially killing narcos is LE BAD
You're one of the first anons on /k/ that I've seen take the movie as an unironic condemnation of the "real" strategy being used.
I don't exactly disagree with you but most people who use expressions like "it was very womanly" generally consider the film to be condemning that attitude and firmly saying that in the real world, you have to get your hands dirty.
These anons will verbatim recite Alejandro's quote about how she will not survive in the narco war because she's not a wolf and this is the land of wolves now.

That's why I said
>as a generic superhero movie
because as an adaptation of the comic book it's as faithful as Disney's Sword In The Stone is an adaptation of Le Morte D'Arthur
but as a standalone property the movie is quite fun and coherent

>That's why I said
Fair enough, I never knew it was a comic book adaptation until way later, I just thought it was a kind of weird bad movie that was sort of fun in its own way and pretty funny in a few places.
I think the critics of it are usually meaning to say that it's shit without realising that it is actually a comic book movie and some of the lower quality traits are actually just genre tropes which are acceptable in context.

I agree that it's a wildly divergent adaptation that makes the use of the name pointless, especially because it wasn't a well known IP that bring in hype by its presence.
>>
>>65420861
>most people who use expressions like "it was very womanly" generally consider the film to be condemning that attitude and firmly saying that in the real world, you have to get your hands dirty
Yeah because they're idiots who can't tell subtext from context

And I'm betwixt and between
I can appreciate the nuances of the question whether it is necessary and right to kill drug smugglers while at the same time being firm that it has to be done
The "womanly" part of Sicario is not just that it (not so) subtly criticises the tactic, the critique also makes up too much of the film's internal conflict. Emily Blunt, who as the protagonist is the avatar of the film-makers' opinions on the subject, spends too long being too conflicted over slotting a bunch of scumbags, and at the end is too grieved by the outcome (showing that the film-makers do not agree with the tactics). Ditto the entire boo-hoo-woe-is-poor-Mexican-football-kid, if we slot his drug smuggling dad he will be sad, are we the baddies?

Fuck that. Blow them all up until they stop coming.
>>
>>65420894
>Eh, it is not a high class film
Good acting, classic storyline, tight script, Chekov's Quotes, dash of poetry, gun autism, universal plot, mindless akimbo gun running... it's like a B movie made with A movie talent

>If it weren't such an acid trip
It's filmed quite well especially compared to the shakeycam sixty cuts per minute style of Bourne Supremacy
I was actually introduced to Equilibrium by a minimalist who loved the movie for its interior design

Agree on Sudden Impact. Sondra Locke is a shit actress, and not particularly attractive. It is a shame she shacked up with Clint as long as she did, because some of my favorites of his movies have to try and overcome the sheer awfulness that is her screen presence.

The Enforcer is not as strong for me as the first two. However, I appreciate it as a historical artifact, a window into an era that is increasingly conveniently forgotten because it is unsuitable to the current progressive narrative. Tyne Daly was also a great choice as the female cop, she does likeable tomboy with a bit of a chip superbly.

I've never seen The Dead Pool, which I continue to chastise myself for. Some day.

Netflix's Punisher rendition delivered very little /k/ino. SEAL Team, while I watched it, would give you decent /k/ino when the team deployed, but you'd spend the other half of the season dealing with typical network TV soap opera bullshit.

Good shootouts are expensive, which generally means they're beyond the means of a TV show.

I rewatch bits of pic rel pretty often. It's a shame there was never a sequel.

>>65422517
>he always manages to score headshots and his enemies always manage to hit him in the armour and nowhere but
The way that he holds his jacket to be bullet proof really pisses me off but not quite as much as watching guys with guns walk up to grappling distance so that he can grapple them, flip them and shoot them with their own gun.
Nobody just stands still and shoots the unarmed man. Though I suppose it would make for a short film.
The nightclub scene and a few others aren't so bad for this because it's a chaotic and cluttered environment but the art gallery scene in #2 is atrocious.
>>
>>65422619
>The way that he holds his jacket to be bullet proof really pisses me off
under the circumstances it's a smart use of his magic jacket, so I personally forgive that
but I know what you mean; the magic jacket should never have been introduced to begin with, but it was a necessity forced by the style of action; which leads us to the question of why the shooting choreography had to be like that, and that is where we find the true problem with John Wick
everything else is downstream of the decision to make him basically a Call Of Duty / God Of War protagonist
including, as you say,
>grapple them, flip them and shoot them with their own gun.

Eh, I think it was something else, they committed to some BJJ or something gunfu and injected it into scenes where they couldn't write plausibility into it.

The Big Hit (of all things) did massively outnumbered shoot outs a bit better with the protagonist semi-plausibly wiping out a room full of guards and that was a deeply unserious movie.

I fucking loved picrel in high school. Had multiple hot topic shirts, memorized the prayer, etc. I even liked the 2nd one. Now? Either you still think it's a good movie because the last time you watched it Bush was still president, or you realize how much you have grown as a person. I guess not every movie needs to be made solely for adults, aint nothing wrong with edgy movies made for young adults and teens, but I was cringing so hard during 80% of this the last time I had to see it.

It resembles Matrix because they both were inspired by the same original source: Chinese action movies, particularly John Woo but also Bruce Lee and kungfu movies in general. Kurt Wimmer literally looked at kungfu and said "the West should have martial arts* too, but with something All-American: guns guns GUNS"
The plot is Fahrenheit 451 meets Brave New World iirc

I kinda defend a lot of the nightclub and other stuff in the first one as that up until a point, not even the mob guys REALLY wanna kill John. Even the dad seems to have the idea that if they can just knock him out, maybe talk some sense into him, sit down with him, etc. that they can work past this. In a way its almost as much of the dad realizing his still-alive son is already dead because of what he did and coming to terms with that as much as it is John trying to find a purpose beyond killing.

A million quotes later and i've softened on it in subsequent viewings. "Wrong fuckin alley" "I'll have a Coke" "I killed your cat you druggie bitch." Pretty much anything Rocco says in that scene it memorable for some reason.
It's kind of like if Tarantino was good at writing funny dialogue and was a fat Irish guy from Southie. e.g. slightly less sophisticated and
less gay rape
.
The sequel was nothing special but we went to see it in the theaters. Really was missing Rocco.

If I may be a bit self-reflective, I think some of my cringing is less on the movie itself, but implicitly towards myself. The dialogue is bad, but if it is fun or funny and not meant to be 100% cool, I cannot fault that. I am, however, constantly reminded that /I/ thought this was the coolest fucking thing and just due to a general shame of my own self as a teenager have projected more criticism than is due. FWIW I do like the Willem Dafoe stuff, and some of the quotes, but I admit I've also grown up more and my tastes have changed and frankly I dont even like most modern action movies for feeling too manufactured 'cool' even that Bob Odenkirk pair had me cringing the entire time. I can sort of understand that, in the sense that the movie depicts an idealised form of how early 20s reckless men behave if they thought they could be vigilantes and shit
And when I was in my early 20s I was just as cocky and quippy and devil-may-care as in the movie. And my mates and I had our share of banger one-liners and adventures too. Yeah there are a couple of things we did that was a little cringe, or dangerous and unnecessary, looking back. But this is a normal part of life.

>"To Live and Die in LA" by Michael Mann.
>>65415648
>to live and die in la is actually made by bill friedkin,
>>65417686
>mann wishes he made to live and die
^This. William Friedkin was a real one, and his interview clips are hilarious. TLADLA mandatory viewing.
Mann tends to recycle characters, themes, script ideas, and even dialogue.

bill friedkins isn't exactly beyond reproach either, he made an entire film about being a fag (which I've never seen).

hey, don't forget his motley crew of 60 year old balding fat guys who only carry .38s and have never heard of a bulletproof vest.
>>

>he made an entire film about being a fag (which I've never seen).
True. Not everything he did was a home run.
>Cruising
Me neither. The stories about the homo protests and outrage during the shooting of the movie, and Pacino being a pain in the ass junkie are funny. I don't think the message of the movie is that fags are amazing and wonderful.

>>65427362
>The guy was supposingly "your worst nightmare." yet his only real muscle was two body guards that had no idea how to bodyguard.
>>65427840
>hey, don't forget his motley crew of 60 year old balding fat guys who only carry .38s and have never heard of a bulletproof vest.
Wasn't the 'young' vs. 'old' hired guns supposed to be part of the point in the plot? Wasn't the old criminal boss supposed to just be a money man for cartels or something, and not necessarily a scary mobster?
>>
>>65413365
>the way of the gun insists on itself.
I know that Family Guy made that phrase popular for mocking empty bloviating film critiquing but honestly that's a pretty apt description for Way of the Gun. McQuarrie desperately wanted to be a new Peckinpah, so he makes a movie that demands to be acknowledged for having a "deep" plot and "grey" characters but the whole thing winds up being a cludged-together jaunt of unlikeable assholes scheming against other unlikeable assholes in the most convoluted way that's narratively possible. It's an utter mess of a movie, but it has good gunplay so this board loves it. To its credit it goes have good shootout scenes, and a great car chase that isn't talked about enough here and some good one-liners. But that doesn't make up for the abject nightmare of its plot.

That was the plot. The old dudes were what remained of james canns crew most of who were old/dead but loyal and unaffiliated. Since the main guy was just a bank/launderer/front he didnt have real power and couldn't mobilize the mob or whatever organization.

The retard(s) bitching that WoTG's plot is a nonsensical mess don't seem to understand any of it at all. It isn't complicated, or deep, nor does it try to be. It's just a neo-Western shoot'em up.
>>
>>65428118
Its sort of 30% ok and kind of interesting with the rest being mostly 70% dogshit IMO

Greyhound I really wanted to like because its a really tough part of the WW2 war that saw some really brave, ordinary people taking massive risks to do their job and duty. Then they just manage to fuck up the pacing, needless drama, messed up the suspense and had practically no characterization apart from Tom Hanks pretends to be a captain
>>
>>65428143
there was a bunch of easily missable background complexity like blackguy cucking oldguy and knocking up whitewoman who supposedly couldnt have kids.
>>
>>65428151
>bunch of easily missable background complexity like blackguy cucking oldguy
I thought it was pretty obvious once they were French kissing in the middle of the movie, but maybe it needed some Nolan-esque exposition to make sure the audience understood what that meant?
>>
>>65428147
>they just manage to fuck up the pacing, needless drama, messed up the suspense and had practically no characterization
You didn't like the cartoony Nazi sub captain taunting Tom Hanks in English?
>>
>>65428182
Yeah and its not like it would have ever been done either even in the most aberrant of cases
Much as zee germans are crazy, they aren't that type of crazy!

As a liberal, I thought it was going to be chud TDS dogshit and passed on it.

Oh come on, they had tank battles and used beehive rounds and fucked around with fuzing and made sensible preparations and even the retard was actually a well trained retard who was good at his one job.
It's a pretty /k/ movie.

Plus they shot some nazis and who doesn't like shooting nazis?

They did use it to snipe the cop and others at that bar prior to the end fight. Though yeah extra mags would have been game changing.

>what the fuck have you done today?!
No, it's gay cringe of the highest order
>>
>>65425367
The digital animations are better.
>>
>>65435437
It also bugs me that he does the long slow methodical check for magazines, which makes sense to do, but not if you knew you came to the fight with just one mag. So did he just forget? I guess maybe you can treat it like a realistic fuck up. He DID forget the mags but didnt waste time to slap his face and say "oh fuck!", he just moves on
>>
>>65435379
Mags were probably hard to find in 1999/2000. Also had to nerf the character for story.
>>
>>65435544
Its an IMI 332. I bought one because of this movie. Heavy, cumbersome but it looked badass. I dont remember the mag situation. Probably not good it was a pre 1989 ban rifle imported in limited quanities.

If I recall in all the fighting the entire movie you see the robots grease like 2 hadjeets. Very shameful

Galil guy was Cherrito. Anyway, I like Heat both for gunfights and for those prep and planning scenes - watching the film feels a bit like reading a Frederick Forsyth's novel and I enjoy that.

Which reminded me that 1973 Day of the Jackal is a good film rarely mentioned here...
>>
>>65425367
it's a good movie, better than the 3rd, let down by its B-tier budget and effects
the plot was basic but it's one of the best horror/alien action movies I've watched
and it has a couple of banger lines
>no wonder we're losing this war, everyone's fucking instead of fighting
>you just killed a general!
>lots of generals out there, flyboy!

the political commentary was perhaps too subtle for the target audience: I remember reading a magazine movie review that criticised the movie because "Dax was an anti-Federation murderer but suddenly is venerated as a hero at the end, it doesn't make sense" and I was like, that was the fucking POINT, retard!
>>
>>65436179
1973 Jackal is good except Forsyth's Jackal is supposed to be one charming Bondesque motherfucker and this guy is a wooden plank
