>>65426543Very much so. Think of them as a digital camera that can see IR (many of the cheap 850nm monocular models are modified camcorder designs), with a built-in IR flashlight to allow you to see. Anyone else with digital or analog NV can see your IR light beam, but normies/tweakers with mark I eyeballs can't. This relegates them to non-combat civilian use like hunting, training, and home security, but if you're just going to check bumps in the night from your porch it's fine. Good news is you can even go cheaper if you get a cheap 850nm mono that can turn off its built-in IR, and slap a 940nm IR flashlight onto it with tape. That's a ghetto ass rig but can be had for like $60-70 if you're good with improvising and don't mind the extra bulk/weight. Think about this, for a while the /nvg/ /pfg/ special was a Nerf Modulus Day/Night Zoom Scope with an old TV remote (which uses an IR emitter) taped to it, like $25 total back in the day for a semi-usable NV device with horrific lag and screen artifacting but usable for static observation out to like 20-30 yards. Couple tips, the IR beam from digital NV is blocked by a lot of window coatings, so to use it you'll need to open a window or step outside. Also, unlike analog, digital NV is effectively immune to bright light damage unless you point it at the sun. Good for training rookies.
