How real was the "samurari tests his new sword on a random guy" thing?
>>
It happened, but not nearly as often as you've been led to believe
>>
Ask yourself how the local lord will feel about you killing someone under his protection who pays his rent.
>>
>>65432519
According to Edo period news sources(because every time this happened it was in the news) it happened once about every 5 years. Believe it or not it was actually illegal for samurai to do this against commoners unless the commoner did some sort of grievous offense against them which had to be proven from a third party.

They tested their swords on condemned prisoners, not on random guys. That being said, while samurai had the right to cut down commoners for grievous insults, the act required witnesses and had to be reported to officials who would investigate its legitimacy. Arbitrary murder was strictly prohibited, when this right was used inappropriately, the samurai was punished, often forced to commit sudoku. Surprise, you can't just kill the peasants making the daimyos, and your, rice.

So it's essentially two truths combined to form a myth.
>>
>>65432519
It was real, unlike bushido or ninja.
And speaking of blade testing, they also did it on folks who commited suicide. Japanese followed the Chinese custom of severing the head as evidence/identification of your victim and the rest of the body was unimportant so once you did the whole sudoku business, they'd just set the headless body back up and hack it to pieces to test swords.
That part gets omitted in all the bullshitoo cinema glorifying the period and inventing shit out of its collective, stinking, Americano-British ass with zero ability to read Japanese manga for kids, much less contemporary historical Japanese or Portuguese who wrote about these practices.

1. Just staring at a samurai is enough of an offence
2. When the third party is the samurai's buddy?
You don't understand how feudal society works.
>>
>>65432697
Edo Japan wasn't a normal feudal society tard. Most of the laws in place existed to restrict the power of samurai that were not members of the matsudaira family(tokugawa family). There are multiple writings regarding things like tsujigiri specifically in the area of Edo that clarify that you couldn't just have a samurai buddy claiming to magistrates that commoners were disrespecting you so you killed them justifiably. You needed multiple eyewitness accounts and In some cases even police testimony. In certain domains, specifically matsumae as well as parts of kyushu or shikoku yes it was pretty easy to get away with killing commoners especially if you were a joshi. But in domains directly under matsudaira control(almost half of them by the 1800s) this was incredibly difficult and really not worth the trouble unless you were a psychopath. I recommend reading the tokugawa world if you are interested in knowing more about Edo period society. There were quite literally laws for basically every aspect of life by the end of the period. The definition of bureaucratic hell but also rather modern in some aspects(existence of small claims courts, generational debt was outlawed in the 1600s while it continued to exist in the rest of asia even into the modern day, relatively free market for commoners, etc.)

It's probably as real as the right of noblemen to fuck peasant women on the first night of their marriage in medieval Europe. Also probably as real as elaborate torture devices that can only be used for oddly specific forms of torture and would require great skill to manufacture.
Look, if a noble wanted to rape or kill a commoner or have one tortured he could probably do it and get away with it, but the sensationalized bullshit is bullshit made for the sake of a good story or as a propaganda piece.
>>
The plot device of a wicked samurai committing random street killings was extremely convenient for histrical drama scripts, so it continued to be used.

Both Japan and Korea had pretty extensive caste systems (similar to India’s in terms of hierarchy). Both were oppressive, but the Korean one was much more legally established and institutionalized and it lasted right up until Japanese colonization.

It'd be a close run thing which often used to end up with someone being stabbed, but I'm kind of going with the Japs being stuck in the past muh culture and archaic ways of doing shit that makes no fucking sense to anyone except its always been folded a 1000 times and fuck you, its how its done. Zee Germans do annoying autistic shit as well but they only drag their ass about 20 or 30 years behind everyone else when it comes to modernisation and making life super fucking annoying to exist in. They will reluctantly adapt, invent and change given enough provocation, firebombing or just forced to do so.
There's a good argument the Germans could be more fucking annoying and autistic in some areas, they both absolutely love paperwork to the extent it verges on obsessive
>The Jap does it because its always been this way, fuck you its how its done
>The German does it because it has to be done this way and there's rules, don't break the rules
>>
If, unlike in Japan, severed heads were not used as evidence, how then did feudal lords evaluate the battlefield achievements of their retainers?
>>
>>65433721
>In their typical autistic fashion
Grading heads was a cash-saving measure. Warlords had a lot of warriors and little land and cash, so anything that helped them to control how much they gotta pay per head was more than welcome.
It's also was a relatively low-cost way of reaffirming warrior society and reframing general types of upper class behaviour for Samurai occasions.

If you want to know true muderhobo autism, you should read up on the Montenegrians.

They a) believed that taking heads was necessary to maintain the special sauce that creates worthy warrior lineages and b) that any worthy head served that purpose.
So, to keep the mana juice thick and flowing, they also beheaded their own wounded. Mind that they didn't massacre them, they offered it and the wounded picked who got to carry their heads. This led to funny discussions where they had to come to terms with how to balance the personal honour of the soon-to-be-skull trophy and their societal need to spread the warrior mana juice wide enough to guarantee that their nation kept on producing warrior lineages.

As in the elders' pick was an up-and-coming hero, but the wounded pushed back and named somebody from a hallowed line of warriors as his personal pick, insisting that his personal honour should afford him at least that much.

Kinda ironic that they ended up being on the receiving end of America testing their new sword kek
>>
>>65433686
It 100% wasn't. Believe it or not, rape has always been reviled outside of active warfare, and peasants could and would go over your head if you fucked with them, or revolt outright.
>>
>>65433777
They didn't have to. A fixed annual number of military service days were a personal legal obligation that your superiors did not have to compensate you for at all. The level of equipment and number of troops you were expected to bring along were likewise fixed and you could only expect payment by exceeding the number of troops or once the conflict exceeded the service period.

Your main source of bonus income were plunder and ransom rather than heads. Additional rewards were granted for being first to breach walls and other acts that kings could somewhat clearly discern from a vantage point, but those weren't regular enough to matter.

As a regular goon, personal bravery wouldn't necessarily net you a position with a pension either, as officers were elected by the troops or the paymaster and were usually granted based on seniority and personal relationships.

Head-taking apparently became more common with the rise of mercenary armies, who were hired and rewarded on an individual basis, and remained in practiced until the early 17th century. The practice lasted longer along the Ottoman Frontier and among Slavic Ottoman subject populations.

Rare. If you chopped up someone else's peasants then they're going to come after you. Likewise, you'd have to be crazy to chop up your own peasants. Typically, sword testing was done on condemned criminals or fresh corpses because they were seen as economically worthless.

Still, crazy samurai did happen and it often led to Consequences.

Money is usually power (with some exceptions)
Many cultures around the world, from Confucius to Communists to Nazis, despised merchants because they are a rising threat; they have proven themselves capable of growing power, so they might overthrow the incumbents
Shit like this is a psy-op by the incumbent elites to turn the masses against the potential threats to the elites

>SEA did not and the Chinese families there own like 90% of all wealth in the country, running all the casinos, all the banks, anything with money the big Chinese families hold it tightly by the balls be it Thailand or Indonesia.
The governments hold far more money and power than the few chinese there do. These economies are highly centralised and aligned with political power, in typical banana republic fashion

I actually used to travel a lot when I was younger, before the work-life-married-children happened and in between deployments I'd travel to Japan and visit an old mate who lived on Shikoku, drink beers and I'd import 90's JDM shitboxes for fun at the auctions. There's a lot to like about Japan, until you get tangled up in the bureaucracy, process, bullshit of culture, customs and while that seems quaint and cute from outside as a tourist. It's just fucking annoying to deal with.
Sort of like there's a couple of guys who know how the shit works
But they're rarer than a grand master who can falcon dick punch someone with chi-powers and they aren't saying 'how', because its their shit, their knowledge and they're taking it to the grave. Like you can battle through and alternatively if you can't pay the grand master, you find half a dozen guys who knows exactly ONE thing about the system and combined you have the Ronin gang to get the same thing done and hope to hell that none of them fuckup because you're back at square one. Sitting at the docks and ending up in a big white man screams at smol yellow man to let my car go on the ship

By all means, visit. Just don't do business or live there
The artisanal autism, the food, the hotels are all great but you're still forever an outsider. They hide all the hot whores, you need to ask around all the time for various places, the cops are an absolute nightmare if you've done anything so much as a little bit wrong and if you're American (I'm not) its like you're practically a nigger along with the Russian and the only whitey round eyes they passably sort of like are the French. They just put up with everyone else.
Unless you are dark skinned or even dark tanned then you're an actual monkey

Germany was where I took my wife when we were dating because she wanted to see it, she also is a massive weeb so we had to do Japan later but we did a tour of Germany visiting places my family used to live there and did a tour down the Rhine. Highly recommend. Made some good friends, stayed at their place and later on they stayed at ours a few years later.
They were amazed, in Germany its all PAPERS PLEASE and you line up, speak to some desk gronk and they go through your paper and make you fix shit up then and there, pay now, with cash or fuck off and come back later with the right form. This is for Everything. Taxes, council rates, banking stuff, passports, phone payments, bills etc
They come to my place and they're like
>Holy o Foch you can do everything online?
>Oh yeah, no one's talking to someone if they can at all avoid it
>Everything is epay?"
>Yep, I carry like 50 bucks tucked into my wallet for emergency, but everything is card payment, no fees

Everything in Germany is a form and shoving money at someone, get a reciept and so utterly painful to live that they considered literally leaving the country when they found out how people actually live without constantly smashing their skull into a wall standing in line. it has gotten better over the last 20 years, its not completely as fucked as it used to be but there's still all these archaic institutions and businesses that just aren't adapting because they don't like it. Boomer-ism +4 vs anyone younger than 60, like I said, its a great place to do tourism. Just don't get caught living there as the whole business aspect is still dating around the time the 3 Roman legions went missing in the forest

Its not totally shit, but its just harder than it needs to be in some areas

It happened, because the Samurai were actually a really broad class, economically and socially speaking, even with multiple hereditary classes among them. But it was never a common occurrence or a sanctioned practice.
You had nearly impoverished Samurai, Samurai running extortion schemes, Samurai engaging in relatively petty crime, and Samurai who were just generally callous people.
In fact, there were times wealthy merchants were living better lives than the average Samurai. Samurai were mostly paid in a fixed quantity of grain collected as taxes. Usually rice, often, but not always, the highest grade of rice.
But if the price of rice is low, and the merchants are selling goods that are higher in demand, the merchant's going to have more purchasing power.
The problem is that Samurai were generally forbidden or looked down on for doing unbecoming kinds of work, even if it would make them a better living. You'd probably never starve, even as the lowest class of Samurai, but your wealth was totally subject to the relative scarcity or abundance of food in any given year. Which meant that craftsmen and merchants slowly outstripped most samurai in terms of quality of life as time went on.

So, it was pretty rare, but never completely out of the question that a disgruntled hinterlands Samurai with an axe to grind would just lash out at a commoner to make himself feel powerful and important, even though he was becoming less and less so with every year that passed. (Seriously, they had to impose tons of laws to forbid commoners from having nice things like dyed and patterned fabrics and elaborate hairstyles.)

So…Carl Barks, Carl Barks! He’s the cause of all our pain?

>>

They actually took to guns pretty quickly once they were copied from Portuguese designs. The feudal system persisted for over 300 years after the introduction of firearms to Japan, only ending in 1868 with the Meiji Restoration.

>>65434591
No, the Samurai fucking loved guns, broadly speaking. It's one of the biggest reasons they were banned by the Meiji government. They were inseparable from the Samurai as a class, so they were done away with, alongside swords and other edged weapons to dispossess the now-former Samurai of their ability to reestablish a class divide and reinstitute the Samurai as an institution. (That role was taken by the military, and we kind of imposed the same thing on them after World War II by restricting their military to the JSDF, who have this fucking thing as a mascot, which I think shows that they still have an innate love for guns.)
>>
>>65434591
Anyone looking to overthrow the Tokugawa shogunate would need guns for it, and as such the Tokugawa shogunate would likely take a very pointed interest in anyone playing around with guns. So the guns never went away, but unless you had a good and shogunate-benefitting reason to get them out (like a peasant rebellion for example) a smart daimyo let his collect dust in a well locked armoury.

It happened rarely. A peasant was a valuable resource, killing one was like destroying an expensive piece of agricultural machinery. A Lord would take a pretty dim view of his retainers hacking down peasants who were supposed to plant and harvest his rice. IIRC the samurai who did it was investigated, had his swords confiscated and placed under house arrest where he was expected to meditate on what he had done. It wasn't just a free-for-all bloodbath of peasants.

The funny shit is it was just about rules of the road built around hierarchy. All he needed to do was to obey them. You at the very least stand aside for the procession. Instead he started to fight, and some Samurai seeing that their lord is being insulted, decide to slice a bitch.

This was NOT a case of renegade samurai acting maliciously, it was them attempting to please their lord's honor.

>Later that year, the Satsuma paid the £25,000 (equivalent to £2,700,000 in 2025)[6] in compensation demanded by the British government with money borrowed from the Bakufu. The Satsuma never repaid the £25,000 to the Bakufu because the Tokugawa Shogunate would be overthrown in the Meiji Restoration five years later, and British demands for the Shimazu's bodyguards that had killed Richardson to be brought to trial were unfulfilled.
>>
Where European knights had to be knighted, were minor nobles, i think a lot of Samurai were basically men at arms henchmen, thugs
, bodyguards of clan figures who weren't allowed to keep men at arms. Which be degree is kind of true of knights I guess.

But point being, a lot of Samurai were drunk retards with stolen swords who didn't have proper jobs and went around chopping at and raping peasants.

The warrior figure you have in mind isn't a samurai, but a warlord, of which there were many in Japan especially in regional areas.

>just force the merchants to suck your dick and eat your shit
depends. problem for the samurai is that they were paid in rice and as time went on many didn't even have land. the stipend didn't change in value, so they got eaten by inflation and if they needed to convert to cash they needed the merchants to do it. so by the time of the tokugawas the merchants were becoming more and more important, essentially acting as banks, and certain fiefs would use the services of certain merchants. so you, a lowly samurai, couldn't just go and fuck with a merchant. and on top of all of that, social order had to be maintained, and letting samurai just do what they wanted was a no go.

japan had laws and the laws were enforced. samurai where the lowest level of gentry, they enforced the law but they also had to obey it.

bit of an egg before chicken situation there
merchants grew in power at the end of the Muromachi and Edo periods because it's not really possible to grow a civilisation without the arbitrageurs of the merchant and banker class
otherwise above happens
it is because of this growth in power that they could hire samurai to defend their holdings, rather than the other way round
if the authorities had made a rule that merchants were forbidden from defending their property, well, obviously the result would be to make private property accumulation impossible; capital would be held by the only ones authorised to protect it (the authorities); the economy would become centrally-planned, and failure by the central planners (the authorities) to respond adequately to the changes inflicted by external forces (poor harvest, natural disaster, competing nations, etc) would cause the eventual dissolution of the State

in addition,
>problem for the samurai is that they were paid in rice
AND their rice pay was fixed
>and as time went on many didn't even have land
a deliberate policy of Tokugawa Ieyasu which destroyed their social mobility, ensured they could not overthrow the shoguns, and created a proto-hikikomori warrior caste and the resulting Edo sex trade

the merchant caste grew again when these rules were relaxed
and warlords sprang up again only when they got around the rice rule by growing sweet potatoes and yams

While prima noctae has scant evidence at best, the French literally had a government position of mistress-to-the-king as early as the the 14th century and pretty much all societies - everywhere, throughout all of recorded history - have tolerated men having some flavor of side piece to greater or lesser degrees and the more rich and powerful the man the more they can get away with. A king or a similarly powerful lord having a stable of teen pussy comprised of the spare daughters of upper-class families wasn't exactly unknown and neither was some shitheel scion raping a peasant girl and either buying her family off with daddy's money or buying off the local magistrate.
>>
>>65442944
NAYRT, but all of that is irrelevant, it's all vastly different from the concept of prima noctae

Norks still practice a version of it.

As real as prima nocta.

Not only did the samurai take to the gun (by and large), the Japanese actually improved upon the Portuguese guns and made impressively advanced weapons before ultimately falling behind in firearms design.

This existed in Europe, too. Nobles and knights were forbidden from certain jobs, and working was social suicide, in general. "Robber knights" were a phenomenon for centuries, as well.

It's over, they have made an image depicting themselves as the chads and the gaijin as a wojak

They did cut down quite a few peasants but obviously not that many.

Headhunting was a common practice around the world.
>>

I am going to guess that it's probably not true. At least not that shit I read about "N-Body Swords" where N > 1, mostly because no sword is getting through that much meat and bone. Oh you might be able to cut through a joint of someone who's just standing there holding still, or one upper arm if properly braced, but that's it.

No idea where that came from, might be WWII propaganda, unless "body" is a kind of edgy way to say "soaked tatami mat", where cutting like five of those is impressive but still realistic.

All you needed to do was to purchase a letter of indulgence from the nearest church and you were good to go.

Ninja were real, but the CIA/Mossad are not.

You watched a movie called The Last Samurai with Tom Cruise, even watching shit like anime would have alerted you to the fact that the Samurai had guns and loved the fuck out of them.

>the Japanese actually improved upon the Portuguese guns
is that why they kept buying them all the way until the border closure?
>>
>>65443689
Ninja weren't real at all. Not in the sense we tend talk about them, at least. What did exist were spies and bandits who ran around in dark clothes and used caltrops and dust bombs and knives forged out of farm tools in order to steal shit or assassinate people on someone else's behalf. But there wasn't really a dedicated field of martial arts for the use of that shit, and there were never formal organizations of highly trained political dissidents aligned against the Samurai class or the Emperor. There were peasant uprisings, and they did utilize that sort of spy sometimes but it rarely amounted to anything. The weapons we tend to identify with ninja, assuming they weren't entirely fabrications, were farm tools modified for combat, which were used by conscripted peasants fighting on behalf of their lords just as much as they were by the discontent peasants on the other side.
>>
>>65443829
Congratulations, you just described the ninja while claiming they weren't real because they aren't literally naruto-running super magic dudes. However, the CIA and Mossad remain strictly in the realm of fiction.
>>
>>65443841
I don't know anon, Instructional manuals allegedly written for CIA and Mossad operatives when those organizations were most active are just as available as the tokugawa era ninjutsu manuals we all know and love.
>>
>>65443860
Those manuals are just fanfiction.

The idea of special infiltration tactics, dedicated Ninja tools, and some kind of quasi-revolutionary Shinobi-class with its own martial arts tradition was never true. You'd never see someone using a grappling hook to rappel up a castle wall in the middle of the night. No shuriken, no kusarigama, no gimmicked moats to allow messengers to slip out unseen during a siege by going through a secret passage. You'd never see someone wrapped head to toe in dark blue fabric, either. Almost everything we associate with Ninja as a concept comes from fiction developed long after the relevant period of history, whether it's close to plausible or not.

Nobody ITT claimed that, but ninja did exist.

Yes, but that's irrelevant because nobody claimed that's what is meant by ninja, who, I will remind you, did exist, unlike George H.W. Bush, who is a fictional character.
>>
>>65443873
You were once told that Kusarigama and Shuriken were not battlefield weapons, and what you heard was "No one used these weapons, they are as real at Bat'leth"

Genuinely don't know where this idea that swords can't go clean through people comes from. You can watch any cold steel video of some fat bloke cleaving through three pig torsos.

anon, mistress-to-the-king is a radically different concept to the local boss having first dibs to rape your virgin wife. if you don't understand this go the fuck outside.

You've heard of medieval knight-service, yes? Where a knight owes his liege e.g. 40 days of campaign service every year (minimum)
Well, the Tokugawa shogunate instituted a system whereby samurai were required to leave their fiefs and be physically present in Edo every alternating half-year, then full year. The purpose was ostensibly to provide a standing military force and display the military might of the shogunate, but the ulterior motive was probably to reduce the time they spent with their families, retainers and peasants, reduce "local community ties", because this had been a major factor in the hundreds of treacheries of the Sengoku wars.

When they were in Edo, the samurai were expected to spend a lot of their duty time with each other instead of their families. Although daimyos were allowed to maintain private residences in Edo and their faimlies were expected to live there, their samurai and servants were sequestered in barracks.
These samurai and servants had a much harder time of it; their families would usually be in the manors back home. Therefore like bored young men the world over throughout history to this day, they relieved the boredom in all the usual ways: drinking, playing games, fighting each other, watching (reading) porn, wanking, and fucking whores.
it's not for nothing that the Edo period is mainly known for its development of art, culture, and of course, prostitution (geishas were invented during this time).

Essentially everyone was mobilised and under arms much more often now than before. This is how the popular image of samurai street duels of honour came about, and indeed is how the 47 Ronin incident came about.
