I realised that all these SPEW and ACR type programs after world war 2 to increase the hit probability of individual infantrymen, were basically trying to invent shotguns

a shotgun with a longer effective range, yeah

Sort of, yes, trying to combine the increased hit probability of a shotgun firing shot, with the range and precision of a rifle.
Shitload of squeezing and not very much juice to show for it.
>>
yeah a shotgun with a spread of like 6 moa

And then they did it AGAIN with the Colt ACR duplex ammunition.
>>

Unironically a good idea tho
>>
>>65446193
Now i might be retarded, but it feels like those two bullets would just behave like a single bullet since the rear would push into the fore on ignition.

It was definitely the least silly of the ACR options.

It didn't work because the rear bullet gets stuck in the front bullets turbulence and throws it off completely. The two bullets also sometimes fuck with each other and throws everything off. The idea could work but you would need to do a lot of R&D

you do realize theres plenty of footage of it working just fine, right?

the issue is that it increased the weight & cost of ammo, all while having a less accurate projectile
they later tested it on .50 bmg a bunch, but it still had the same issues in the end

i still think it has merit on lmg platforms, for sheer volume of fire

When I say "it didn't work" I mean not in a practical sense. The accuracy problem is due to aerodynamics. I think it's solvable just needs a lot more research

>It didn't work because the rear bullet gets stuck in the front bullets turbulence and throws it off completely
It's not.
Duplex bullet dispersion is smallest among all hyperburst designs
>>
>>65447226
I should add if not special design duolix bullets impacts are too close to each other, they made specific adjustments to the second bullet so it deviates more. You can see it on the crossection, second bullet base is assymetrical
>>
>>65446197
It's not, getting good consistency out of duplex or triplex ammunition is difficult to do, and it doesn't appreciably improve hit probability.

They were all garbage, except for the Colt which was just a dressed up M16.
