I really don’t understand the weird discourse around military martial arts, both from proponents who claim it's so insanely badass and too lethal for combat sports and detractors who argue they’re a waste of time. The actual purpose is just to teach conscripts the basics of striking and grappling in a minimal amount of time, both in case they ever end up in a close-quarters situation and because it’s generally useful for confidence-building and physical conditioning.
Its useful to understand a baseline of combatives like where to punch a guy so you dont break your fingers and how to regain control if you've been tackled, but beyond that its mallninja bullshit.

Realistically, training with it regularly will put you ahead of, like, 95% of people because the percentage of people who get much physical exercise let alone train in any kind of martial arts whatsoever is rather low. But you wouldn't throw a typical women's self-defense class into an MMA ring.My brother trains in some obscure, niche Chinese martial art. I've looked it up and there are martial arts forums saying it's a fake thing because they do magic katas and it's kind of bullshit. It's not an MMA-type sport. But half the class and the sensei are cops who can just smash the typical person (I've met them), and my brother is WAY stronger than he was before he started. But apparently that specific school/club is a bit more aggressive on account of half of them being cops so occasionally people get injured.

It's just kind of funny like that because they claim it's this specific thing (this probably sounds like bullshido) taught by some Chinese guy who fled the communists in the 1940s. There are only two schools, in two different states, in small towns (not suburbs). But we haven't found any evidence this legendary and mysterious Chinaman ever existed. That said, the communists did crack down on traditional martist artists because what those guys actually were in China were gangsters, so it could be true. It also runs like a weird kind of collective / quasi-paramilitary thing. Not as in a militia or a political thing, but in the internal organizational structure while they larp really hard about it being the greatest thing ever. And half of them are cops. In any event, it's probably all bullshido but my little bro can certainly kick my ass and he's a lot stronger now so it seems to work well enough.
