>China has developed hypersonic glide vehicles that can launch air-to-air weapons in flight, designed to destroy AWACS, tankers, and command aircraft at ranges of thousands of miles.
>The concept means China could threaten the airborne support aircraft that make US air campaigns possible without ever sending a fighter into contested airspace.
>This builds on a 2021 test where a Chinese hypersonic vehicle launched a secondary missile mid-flight, surprising US observers.
>China already fields the PL-17 "AWACS-killer" missile with 300-500 km range from fighters.
>An HGV-launched variant would extend that reach dramatically.

They do seem to be developing the weapons they need.
This doesn't just threaten tankers, but the B-52's we just re-engined for another 100 years of service and the B-1.

If I were the Chinese I'd invest in a network of optical drones or balloons to detect B-2's. They could cover the Western Pacific with balloons for a trivial cost.
They should invest in balloons as a backup comm network for when we take out their satellites.

This missile is also a counter to the B-2 and B-21. Unlike the B-52, these bombers cannot strike targets in China from CONUS without refueling in the Pacific (at least twice). If these anti-air ICBM/HGVs work as intended, they can simply target U.S. tankers loitering near Hawaii, effectively grounding the stealth bombers without ever needing to detect them.

>A Bloomberg report revealed that China has developed an unprecedented system: hypersonic glide vehicles (HGVs) armed with air-to-air missiles to attack targets thousands of kilometers away. This capability is designed to neutralize high-value U.S. strategic aircraft (AWACS radar planes, aerial refueling tankers, and airborne command centers such as the E-4B Nightwatch) that operate far from the front line. Integrated into ballistic missiles such as the DF-17 (~2,400 km) or the DF-27 (~8,000 km), they enable the projection of air defense as far as areas like Guam or Hawaii.
>This system represents the technical and doctrinal maturation of the test China conducted in July 2021. In that trial, a rocket placed a fractional orbital bombardment system (FOBS) into low Earth orbit that circumnavigated the planet, reentered the atmosphere deploying a hypersonic glider at more than Mach 5, and released a secondary projectile in mid-flight. That event baffled Western intelligence, which initially debated whether it was a defensive decoy or an experimental air-to-air missile.
>The test was classified as FOBS because, unlike a conventional intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM)—whose fixed and predictable parabolic suborbital trajectory is set—it reached orbital velocity, giving it global range and the ability to evade U.S. early-warning systems by attacking via unprotected routes, such as the South Pole.By combining long-range hypersonic maneuverability with guided air-to-air munitions, China introduces an unprecedented threat to U.S. air support doctrine.
>Nevertheless, the system faces two major challenges: the need for a real-time tracking chain to lock onto moving targets thousands of kilometers away, and the high risk of escalation, as its launch could be mistaken for a nuclear attack.

>>
>>65454192
American doctrine is based around penetrating and denying enemy airspace. This is the kind of weapon you design if you expect to be denied access to your own airspace. *IF* it performs as advertised, it should be a very effective counter to American strengths and maybe enable to PLAAF to retain control of their airspace. I don't see any reason for the US to design something like this.

This. It's a defensive weapon and the US doesn't have defense of the homeland as a consideration since doctrine is to preemptively attack anyone who makes whites uncomfortable. No need to protect from incoming bombers when you plan to destroy them all on the ground after they "disrespect your authority" by refusing your demand to dismantle them.

China has no means to invade the US to denazify it so they need to invest in blunting the strike, while the US only plans on doing the striking.

It's not a cost-effective weapon on the offensive side. The defender has the advantage in that they only need to make the attack seem too costly for the perceived gain, while the aggressor needs to actually defeat the defender's willingness to defend their homes. If we spent billions on some ICBMs to take out some AWACS over China it's not going to stop the Chinese from defending themselves, while if the Chinese down a couple AWACS as we're preparing to sail over to "teach them a lesson about disobeying us" it might just cause a rational assessment of probable losses to override tribalist bloodlust. The US is under no existential threat so we can always take our ball, go home, and pout and whine to white Europeans that we didn't get our way and that China didn't play fair by letting us win when we really, really, really wanted to.

This is a long-range porcupine quill saying "Stay away," not an offensive weapon to pound your enemy into submission.

I dunno man. Assassinating Iran's entire senior leadership while pretending to negotiate and using all of these bases in "neutral" countries to facilitate a massive air campaign could easily have been misinterpreted as a provocation.

Also when all the base personnel, analysts, SIGINT pros, and other intelligence agents were rehoused in those civilian hotels, did they stop work and take off their uniforms, or were they still supporting the war effort while hiding behind human shields?

>using all of these bases in "neutral" countries to facilitate a massive air campaign
None of those bases were used for the initial strikes. The gulf states asked the US to remove all American personnel from their bases so they could remain neutral, and the US complied and booked hotels for all of them with orders not to do anything even indirectly related to the war. Then Iran bombed the mostly undefended bases and bragged about it, and bombed the hotels killing a bunch of civilians and bragged about that too. After that they quickly invited the Americans back and did whatever they could to contribute to total iranigger death.

No. The US has no need of human shields and obviously would not expect iraniggers to give two shits about the value of human life. The most advantageous course of action tactically would have been to tell the host countries to fuck off and leave our soldiers manning the air defenses that would best protect them from Iranian attacks. Instead, we chose to do what our allies requested of us since we care about them and what they think of us, and the result is that a large number of people were killed and a substantial portion of our air defenses in the region were destroyed with no one to operate them.

There's a German startup called Polaris working on sth similar it seems. There is some UAV carrying a single IRIS-T missile, just had its first test flight a few days ago. This German project seems way less ambitious and advanced than the Chinese but the principle seems similar, flying to the target and then launching the missile.

This spammed cargo munitions thing is too simple, it has constrained situational use. There needs to be an intermediate loitering stage that can pause orientate and fire its own supersonic AAM.

Then its ballistic missile (enters theater), loitering cruise glide (patrol hold space wait gain time and direction), AAM (shot at target pinpointed by other systems).

Does ingenuity and innovation matter if your opponent copies it all AND has orders of magnitudes more capability to produce it?

That being said I think it's a stupid idea either way. Why not build CCAs or aircraft that can do a lot more fancy stuff to penetrate airspace, drop the shorter range payload and then scoot?
