Finally made it onto the range after an 8 month hiatus. Fired some guns I've owned for a while just to regain a little proficiency and two new ones including picrel. 38 special out of this is completely reasonable but 357 feels like it is overkill unless someone is actively on top of you. What a strange caliber for a tiny gun

>>65456703I've got a smith and wesson .357 airweight (made out of scandium), with a 2" barrel and pretty much that grip. I've personally replaced the grip with Hogue overmold, and only fired .357 magnum (which is what it is designed for) out of it once. It's carry load is .357 magnum, but I will NOT practice with .357 magnum out of that platform.I am a 240 lb muscular firearm enthusiast, and I will happily tell you, without any hesitation, that it is a fine platform for .38 special.Still, if I don't really have other options, it's nice to know I'm prepared to stop most threats I might encounter inside Florida. A 1911 does a wonderful job as well, but in the middle of the summer heat, a lightweight gun is the far better option.

If you befriend or become a handloader, you can get .357 rounds sending a 125-gr hollow point at 1050 fps for lower recoil (while probably keeping expansion). No need to send full-power magnum loads in a lightweight revolver.
