Is a 9mm carbine good for hunting coyotes? I'm an amateur and I want to try coyote hunting on my friends ranch (they are having a problem with them) but I've never actually hunted. He says to just bring an AR-15 but I have a 9mm carbine already. Chatgpt says it's ok for shorter ranger, I just can't imagine shooting a coyote at more than 100 yards. Should I stop being cheap? Or is a 9mm carbine ok?

Realistically you'd be limited to shots under 100 yards and they'd have to be really well placed shots. You would be much better served with .223, 5.56, .243, .204 or even 300 blk for coyotes. Just make sure that whatever you use you zero it for yourself beforehand, and find an ammo that runs well in your rifle. It doesn't matter what caliber you pick if you don't hit what you're aiming at with it.

If it's nighttime and you're calling them in, literally doesn't matter. I've called them in within 20 yards and shot them with handguns.
Any cheap .223 rifle that can mount a sight. Could be an AR if you would want one otherwise, but it doesn't have to be. 60 gr or heavier hardballs. Give em hell anon

>>65457433Other than the AI, WTF, are you actually me? I've been considering a few possibilities when it comes to a fox and coyote rifle. One is a silenced 22WMR CZ457. The CZ is great, drops a lot less than 22LR, has VMAX and other options at ~bulk 9mm-ish prices. The issue is that I'm not sure how much damage a 22WMR can really do and if it's enough. Buckeye Ballistics has some great videos and he said he'd do 50 and 100yd ballistics gelatin tests but they're few and far inbetween. Talked to someone local who seems interested in ammo and he said maybe not much past 75 and coyote is pushing it. I've considered buying a 20" AR upper and slapping a silencer on it after actually being impressed with a 16/18" AR with a 30 cal silencer not too far from where I intend to hunt. It may be a bit overkill for fox, though. My other option is getting the 457 in .17, though gel tests for that aren't too common, especially if you have such a high bar (lol) of wanting a minimum 50yd test instead of a 10yd test (even with 22WMR or even .223). The other option I considered which I want after my coyote rifle is a 9mm carbine of some kind, silenced. I know an anon (remember that guy who had a strangely high amount of varmints and raccoons to shoot with like 5.7?) wrecked raccoons with a 9mm carbine on here but at what ranges and ammo? My option I'm kicking the can down the road until next year is, like, some kind of .300 black but I need to do some research into the ballistics for that, not to mention that goes from like a $800 complete rifle (CZ w/ spare silencer) to a ~$1600 complete rifle (MP5) to like a fucking $1900 complete rifle with stock and scope and silencer (Mini 30 if ballistics, drop, ammo cost, and reliability all look good, not including mags).Later I think I might get a more dedicated shotgun as well but that's like a year or two from now maybe.

Or is a 9mm carbine ok?You want something flat shooting with low recoil that can easily be mounted on a bipod/tripod/sticks/etc. while maintaining enough power to schwack a coyote out to a few hundred yards. .223 is right in the sweet spot for this ballistically and the fact that it's cheap and ubiquitous and soft-shooting is just the icing on the cake.
