is this game actually realistic, or is it purposely exaggerating gun physics just to seem "hectic" but anyone in these scenarios would laugh at this?

People react vastly differently to combat stress there is no universal answer. Even if you don't get shakes adrenaline messes with your fine motor skills and makes your hands clench. Tunnel vision is a very real thing.

For me it really just made things slow down and I felt very calm when returning fire even in situations where I probably shouldn't have been.

I haven't played it, but it looks much better than I was expecting.

Some of the animations are overplayed but not in the sense you mean where the movements are exaggerated, but more in the sense that the characters are doing some tacticool stuff that are not taught specifically because they're hard to do under stress or with an elevated heartrate, or are plain silly and make little sense to do in stressful environments because they're almost certain to lead to mistakes (like cocking a gun multiple times and considering it clear). I sort of read the animation style as "what would it look like if you put civilian larperators or 3 gun queens into combat", which is a decent design decision for a game because it's visually interesting and stands out from the pack of mil-inspired animations.

The stumble animation thing is a very good solution to some problems I've been thinking about for a while in FPS gameplay and animations, and very different (and more complicated) to the directions I considered. That's the most impressive part of the whole thing easily. Other games will adopt something like this for sure.

The shader stuff for optics... I'll see... I'm apprehensive about it. Probably optics will be stupid and gamey anyway because the scale of levels is going to be too small to strain the systems.

The in media tablet menu is also cool.

I reckon I'll check it out.

Courts have never upheld trade protections for guns and equipment in vidya. It's fair use. Companies should press back on this bullshit, but I agree a small company is right to be scared (of legal fees).

Ok so I only played one match because there's basically no one online right now.

Game is really weird and intentionally obtuse to play. You can't swing your gun more than like 10 degrees from the point where you ADS'd without losing sight picture and needing to reacquire it, which takes about twice as long as it should. Movement is very slow and weighty, your guy feels like he is either obese or has been wearing full kit for like 12 hours and is now in a gunfight. Turning is slow and a chore.

I was playing this paintball arena style map and it really cemented the idea in my mind that the game felt exactly like playing airsoft at an indoor arena while having 60 pounds of sandbags strapped to you.

I was able to get nearly 60fps consistently even in gunfights with nearly everything maxed on my 3070 so that was good at least. I think the devlogs were kind of misleading though, they act like this game is just a shooter with crazy graphics but your character does not behave like a human at all, unless that human is obese and has next to zero gun experience. And I'm not even talking about all the weirdness surrounding the bodycam viewing perspective, seeing as how it seems to be a magic bodycam that is over the user's right eye or something.

>purposely exaggerating gun physics
it is almost certainly exaggerating motions because without your gut or inner ear, actual motions do not translate to video games.
the most common example is jumping/gravity
the character accelerates downward much faster than 1G would imply because without your sense of balance to inform you that you are falling, real 1G jumps and drops feel too floaty in vidya.
in this game, they're probably exaggerating the speed, motions and visual noise because without your body involved, and without your sense of balance involved, the actual motions would not feel "real"
>>
>>65457784
You don't even need dlc. Just put names in a plain text config file in the game instation folder...
>user redacted names

>>
>>65457985
I imagine that the smaller field of view is another factor: if it gives a reduced impression of speed when moving, then it seems logical that it would do similar when falling

context
you can have the most realistic gunplay in the world, but if your game is about mowing down waves of goons - or if it takes place in a setting that is essentially fantasy - then it's simply not realistic

basically, SWAT 4 is STILL better than Ready or Not, and always will be, because RoN is still laser-focused on dumb bullshit like canted sights and fantasy situations set in gigantic sprawling levels.
I will bitch and complain about this kind of thing for the rest of my natural life
>>
>>65458770
>SWAT 4 is STILL better than Ready or Not
I like to compare Fairfax Residence to 23 Megabytes.
23 should have played much more like Fairfax where you taze an old lady then get into a single gun fight. Instead 23 has you clearing multiple floors and dwellings while shooting almost a dozen people.

This is my problem with just about any attempts to make video game characters more realistic. The average person runs about 6 mph and sprints around 12, and can jump about 20% of their height. Stick those numbers into a video game and the pace turns glacially slow. Then you try to stimulate the character's stress, slowing things down even more at a point where the player is already bored with the slow pace and frustrated at the unresponsive controls and it makes things even worse. The solution is paradoxically to increase the pace and responsiveness in order to evoke that level of stress in the player rather than trying to simulate it in the character.
>>
>>65457610

>>
>>65459321
Anyone who's actually running regularly is going to hit 8mph or better, honestly.
>>
>>65459713
Not to mention the adrenaline rush as well.
Making a "realistic" tactical shooter outside of VR has, in my experience, almost never felt completely fine. It is always clunky in some fucked up direction. Arma Reforger is okay but that's only because it's coming off of the old Arma. Sadly, most devs don't have the will to make a good VR shooter at all.
>>
>>65458577

mechanics that encourage the emulation of what works irl in an emergent way, enable flexibility and encourage players to be thinking proactively. for a cop game i would say that means a logical variety in the types of situations and in the ways on which both suspects and civilians will react. ron is just terrorist hunt with a cop skin and a super corny presentation, because people think realism means depicting tons of pointless minutiae and having 500 different dress up items.

don't get me wrong i like tacticool dress up too, but so many products think it can replace the actual meat of a game and end up with these decrepit early access heaps.

It'll always be crazy to me that SWAT is the more serious game when the villains include violent Christian fundamentalists who abhor violent video games so much they have turned to mass murder, and farmers in full battle rattle enacting bombings in full battle rattle, willing to die for their ideology of unregulated use of pesticides. It's always a backdrop, always just a bit of flavour for the real meat and potatoes which is that people are getting hurt and someone needs to help them. That's what it's really about; bringing order to chaos.

Meanwhile in RoN they have the most down to earth mundane scenarios, like streamers producing CSAM, and it becomes a hyper violent Naked Gun movie, as you're mowing down legions of - what one can only assume are Twitch moderators - who will do L shaped ambushes so their pet streamer can call people niggers online for one more day.
>Have we started the fire, brother?
>Yes, the hype train rises.
>Starship_troopers_theme.mp3 as police are climbing over the bodies of the fallen to reach the PC and fucking swat this guy already
Every fucking mission in that game is like the scene in Aliens when the turrets run out of ammo. How many terrorists in turbans with Osama Bin Laden beards invaded this night club? You could reskin them to be clowns and at least you'd get a plausible explanation for how they managed to commute there undetected.

Absolute fucking farce. Modern developers need a fucking reality check. Not even being nostalgic; my first experience with SWAT 4 was less than 10 years ago. Like this game in the OP, I see a lot of dope tech, but what is the game ABOUT? Just shooting people? That's it?
>>
>>65459903
I need to play RoN again but idk why the levels didn't stick in my mind as much as the SWAT 4 levels. Maybe it's just because 4 feels more stylized and oldschool. I remember every single level in that game but RoN is a bit fuzzy in my mind because it's all realistic visually I think.
>>
>>65459903
It's like if Payday tried to make you take it seriously as a depiction of armed robbery.
>>
>>65459913
The way RoN renders its environments it's always unclear, out of focus, and\or blurry. A curse of modern game design and specifically of Unreal. When everything is kinda fuzzy to the eye it's easy to forget what the details look like. SWAT 4 might not be a visual masterpiece but that era of games had a clear separation of colour and light, so every room has a distinct aesthetic. I don't remember what all the corridors in Stetchkov Syndicate looked like but I damn well remember the warehouse looks like. In RoN there's a drug lab raid that's so dark I legitimately couldn't tell you anything about it.
>>
>>65459913
RoN's levels are both undercooked and overcooked. There's no tonal or gameplay cohesion to be found anywhere
>They have lengthy voiced briefings - which you have to open your PDA and play manually to hear
>They're gigantic sprawling mazes, but they have no setpieces or identity
>They each have their own unique goons, but no music
>They all feature edgy grim shit and headless corpses lying next to their ringing cellphones, but the cops make corny jokes about whatever's playing on the TV etc
>They've all gone through relentless development revisions, so levels were totally different from one patch to another

I honestly can't get over how badly they fumbled this thing

>The solution is paradoxically to increase the pace and responsiveness in order to evoke that level of stress in the player rather than trying to simulate it in the character.
That works for no more than a few weeks at which point your player base is innoculated to the stress and you have an emerging problem with anyone who is even slightly good at video games moving around like gymnastic parkour savants on meth while shooting faster and more accurately than Jerry Miculek on a flat range. People practice video games a thousand times more than any other activity - you literally can't design games with the assumption that "Lol people are shit and won't have the mechanics to exploit this".
>>
>>65459926
You forgot to mention the john wick suspect AI vs your brain dead SWAT AI. The devs instead spend money paying graphic designers and edgy writers instead of fixing their broken game.
>>
>>65459994
>haha, the swat guys will block doorways and tell you to get out of their way, just like SWAT4! the players will LOVE this
>oh, I heard back from the art team: add more random path-blocking garbage to every room in the new level. It should look like a thrift store that got hit by a tornado
>can we add in more civilian spawn points at the furthest edges of the map? we want every player to have to search the level twice, so they can see all the trash and collide with the swat team as much as possible.

It's literally politically correct bullshit. I think it started as them not wanting the names of guns in the game on the off chance Cpt Incel played Black Ops 12 then went on a spree with an AKM as featured by name in BO12.

Actually thinking about it though, I'm pretty sure it's because even COD and Battlefield are currently developed by leftists in California. Just go look at who works for these companies, they're all brown, have blue hair or are wearing women's clothing, or a combo of the three.

These subhuman freaks probably don't want to assist in free firearm advertising, so no real names unless it's something that's normie vernacular already like "AK-47".
>>
>>65460472
don't rule out retarded management

>>
>>65459321
Tarkov is probably the """most realistic""" videogame in terms of stress, injuries, etc, and it's still nothing but extreme compromises to make the game at all playable.
>get shot multiple times in both legs
>can still stand upright
>can run around even, if I take a painkiller
Because it would suck ass if getting shot in the legs would instantly have you on the ground because your body cannot physically support itself with muscles, tendons and bones damaged, like in real life.
You can then field repair your legs with Amazon surgical tools to be nearly good as new with zero pain, because it would suck to have to immediately leave the game to at least semi-simulate going to find proper medical care.
Being shot in the stomach multiple times doesn't completely incapacitate you by making you drop screaming and bleeding out of everywhere. Then dying of nearly guaranteed infection. You just get hungry faster.
Your character also has lungs like Usain Bolt even at a low level, being able to accomplish full bore sprints in full kit for a whole match without losing overall stamina at all. He only needs like 1:1 downtime between sprinting and jogging too. Because it would suck if your guy was realistically gassed out after running a mile through the woods with 50 pounds of kit on in 10 minutes and needed to sit down.
The more people are interested in ultra realistic videogames the more noguns they are in my experience. It's very often teenagers/euros/cuckstaters who can't have anything cool and Tarkov or some other dreck is the closest they can get.

At the end of the day the whole thing is stupid. Getting shot by bullets is very bad for humans and their ability to function. Portraying this realistically is never going to make for a fun game. It's likely not even possible until we can just plug our brains into the Zuckerberg VRbox because there's way too much stuff to simulate to make anything realistic.

SWAT4's locations actually feel lived in by real people. The back office of the A-bomb is great because the manager has a Mary statue. The fume hood sashes in the biolab are covered in sharpie notes. The Catholic homeless shelter has a side office with a pack-and-play by a desk because of course they bring their baby to work.

The building layouts mostly make sense for buildings that are supposed to house people or be workplaces, rather than places to have a cool shootout. The memorable shootouts in that game are the ones you have when you get blindsided and start magdumping cultists through the gaps in an AV cart and slot 2 men and a dot-matrix printer. You're just as likely to work AROUND a set piece as take a fight in one too.

They're also memorable because they are either degen pits your team enters to bring violence to bad people, or everyday locations that criminals have made uncanny by bringing their violence against good people.

Realism in general shouldn't be the goal but I think some features that are incidentally "realistic" are super fun in shooters, like ragdoll physics while alive and dismemberment. Quick time to kill is good too, although the rounds probably have to be short otherwise the majority of players would be turned off after they get domed by a sniper after sitting in the back of a transport vehicle for 30 minutes.
My favorite "realistic" shooter "game" so far is a gmod gamemode called zcity, because it has all the stuff above.
The most fun I've had in that gamemode is the gang war mode where everyone is hopped up on near lethal doses of fent and niggas are crawling around firing at eachother even with pneumothorax and both legs blown off.

In my several years of it, the gear queers were the biggest cheaters by a mile. Their larp fantasy didn't involve them getting hit. COD took over from Halo basically as soon as 4 came out. Know why? Because Halo ultimately devolves into which side in a gunfight has more gunmen. Long time to kill nearly guarantees the side with double the damage in a 2v1 is going to win. COD made it so you could kill people quickly enough to not alert everyone, and allowed you to even outskill multiple people in a straight gunfight. This formula has dominated the gaming industry for 19 years now for this reason.
>>
>>65461110
>This formula has dominated the gaming industry for 19 years now for this reason.
No, the reason is it's easier for shitters to score a kill therefore they're more likely to actually buy the game and possibly play long enough to fall into an MTX trap. This has nothing to do with the quality of gameplay or more importantly skill.

Incorrect, some Red Orchestra games already did this, I'm sure RS2 Vietnam did this.

Here you go, sir.

what would a /k/edditor know about realism?

are you one of those dipshits who thinks modern COD is "realistic"?

>therefore they're more likely to actually buy the game and possibly play long enough to fall into an MTX trap
Amazing how we had a decade of COD and clones dominance before everything turned in a microtransaction sim.

How is it low skill to have a fast time to kill? You if anything are far less likely to be able to withdraw from an engagement and need to be able to continuously perform well to do well. Halo you can just run back to your teammates and let them kill the enemy you already injured.

Yeah it was based, you could be critically wounded but still have another five seconds pre blackout to linp and fire your weapon.

Squad was always trash and it doesn't even have to do with thin-skinned server admins

Part of why I had mixed feelings about the M1 and M2 carbines in that game, sure the followups were lightning fast but if you didn't aim for the CNS both parties probably died

Only game I'm excited for is Standard Procedures.

Tactical shooters need to stop striving for pure "Realism" in their games and make a concerted effort to try something new. Rainbow Six 3 and SWAT 4 released and now 95% of every new tac shooter release is either one of those two or a quake match with instakill on.

They've entered some kind of horrible ouroboros where they just keep making the same game with MORE. Bigger maps with more edge and more guns and more dressup while leaving any actual substantial feature to rot. Tarkov is basically the only game with any kind of notable medical and armor system (ignoring modded arma 3).

Some game needs to come out where they stop trying to make more, and focus on a core system like armor penetration and ballistics, an indepth medical system or just go full fantasy with dwarves and wizards and catgirls and shit.
