Could airships be armored like battleships were and be used as superheavy bombers in contested enviroments?: https://files.catbox.moe/nxy5fb.mp4

>>65461445>airships>armoredLolLmaoUnless there's some revolutionary discovery in materials science where something as strong as steel yet lighter than air is found, it's never happening. Until then, redundant systems on a dirge is the only alternative to "armored airships".
>>65461460Titanium bathtubs are not uncommon with aircraft
>>65461469Ror,Ramao
>>65461470What's so funny?
>>65461469Did you fail to read the rest of the post?
>>65461445You know that armor is HEAVY, right?
>>65461469So only the pilot is armored? Not stopping you from being shot down.
>>65461483Composite armor is actually quite light
>>65461503Comparatively light. It's still pretty heavy.
>>654614451910 called they want their stupid idea back
>>65461445Airship survival is lots of reserve buoyancy and lots of separated lifting cells. You're not going to stop hits from coming in, all you can do is hope the holes are small.
>>65461469for the pilot, not for the entire craft (especially not the entire envelope of an airship)
>>65461445Is that a cinematic from Red Alert 2?
>>65461445>video shows an armored airship being used as a superheavy bomber in a contested area>it gets shot downYou have your answer.
>>65461445No. But they made great scouts. Shame it never took off in the us after the first 3. They wouldn't have been useful for long though.
>>65461748Didn't they see use as sub hunters?
>>65461460It's not exactly lighter than air, but spider silk is much better than steel at bulletproofy stuff.
>>65461460What is UHMWPE?
>>65461445Ok tardimus maximusI'm gonna stop you right there. Hydrogen is flammable and helium is rare and expensive. It's going to cost $50 million minimum and get btfo by a $30k rocket.
>>65461445Every pound of armor is a pound less of payload. And airships have very little payload for their size.
Well. It works in anime.
>>65461445I got this game for my 12th birthday. I played it online like crazy. I remember when Westwood shut it down. Games don't normally revive. Only a handful like Mario, Golden eye, DOOM. RA2 was always called sour grapes by many people.
>>65462066I would always make 2 or 3 blimps. They were so slow they were useless beyond an anti air change of building pace. I would take the 2 or 3, send the to the corners of the map and let them sit until they were hidden, and bring them all the way back to the corners on the other side of the map. And bring them into the enemy base. 50% of the time I'd get them in when it was too late. I even won matches after losing the main ground battle in a race to kill all buildings first. can it be done? It was just a fun idea that was built into the game well balanced. When the game first came out people lost to the blimps. They thought a single missile defense in time was the answer.
>>65461445Is this cutscene from the remaster?
>>65461984Of course it works in anime. Rule of cool reigns supreme in there. I want VFs to be real but I know they're not feasible at all irl
>>65461984In anime they also have mechs, doesn't mean they exist or work IRL
>>65461445>1914-tier Airship warfare.Gods, imagine the kino.>You and your buddies are piloting a 150m long dirigible through the skies.>It's so high up that there are no clouds, planes can't fly high enough to get you.>It's incredibly bright, but also cold and airless. You're all wearing thick flight suits of leather and fur, air masks on linked to air compressor hose attachments around the vessel to let you breathe, and goggles to shield your eyes from the burning solar glare.>In the distance, your friend spots a black dot amidst the bright sky. After several minutes, you identify it as an enemy airship. Two hours later, you're close enough to fire an opening salvo from the ship guns.>The air is so thin, you can barely hear the 6 5 pounder guns and two 12 pounder long guns firing, behind the rasp of your breathing in the breathing apparatus as you clumsily labour to load new shells, or plot the range, distance, and trajectory of the enemy for a firing solution.>Rounds sail through the ribbed canvas above your head, puncturing chambers, forcing others to adapt. Meanwhile, you want to go for the gun deck, to give your shells enough resistance to ignite their fuses.>After half an hour of trading gunfire, the enemy airship is developing a downward list and soon, no longer has the capacity to fire back, given the difference in elevation.>You celebrate with a tot of rum around the crew, before eventually reaching your plotted coordinates, navigating by sextant alone, and release your payload of bomblets and flechettes down, through the clouds, onto what is believed to be an enemy depo.>Later on, you will meet up with the flagship HMS Incomparable, a 300m long flying dreadnought, and one of the greatest engineering works of artifice in the world at the time.
