Is it actually safe to shoot .40 in a 10mm? Ive got around 300 .40 bullets laying around for guns i got rid of years ago and was planning on getting a 10mm soon. Obviously its lower pressure and all that but its a shorter case and does 10mm headspace on the mouth, making the .40 seated too deep to eject or what might happen? Also still undecided on what model to get but im waiting a month or so anyway plenty of time to mull over
>>65461714No, the cartridge won't headspace correctly. It's never safe to fire a cartridge other than what's marked on the firearm. There's only a few exceptions to this rule like .38spc out of .357mag or .223 out of 5.56.
>>65461714People do it all the time, look it up if you don't trust anon, the only issue they have is gunking up the chamber and needing a deep clean to go back to 10mm.
>>65461714>Is it actually safe to shoot .40 in a 10mm? It won't explode, but the only thing you're actually headspacing on when putting a .40 in a 10mm chamber is the extractor itself, so you're being harsh on the extractor when doing that.Optionally, if it's some hypothetical very cheap blowback design which omits the extractor because you can technically do that (or you took it out for some reason), then it will headspace on nothing at all. Won't explode their either, but I imagine you could easily get a situation where the cartridge slides forward to the end of the chamber (pseudo-headspacing), and then the firing-pin can't reach the primer.>>65461720>It's never safe to fire a cartridge other than what's marked on the firearm. It's a good rule of thumb to follow, but it only takes some basic deduction to find exceptions. Some .32 caliber revolvers are able to actually chamber and fire some .32 Auto ammunition. You can also fit and fire some .38 Super ammunition in some .357 Magnum revolvers.
>>65461880 >the only thing you're actually headspacing on when putting a .40 in a 10mm chamber is the extractor itself100% wrong. No firearm in the history of firearms headspaces off the extractor. Most auto pistol cartridges headspace off the mouth of the case. >Some .32 caliber revolvers are able to actually chamber and fire some .32 Auto ammunition. You can also fit and fire some .38 Super ammunition in some .357 Magnum revolvers.Just because you can, doesn't mean you should. I can stick a .45LC into an old single shot .410 shotgun and fire it. It'll work, sure. But that doesn't mean it isn't fucking retarded and wildly unsafe.
Depends on so many different factors it reduces your question to a pointless argument starter without real resolution.
>>65462087No it doesn't. It's 100% cut and dry. DONT SHOOT AMMO THAT WASN"T MADE FOR YOUR GUN. FUCKING EVER. "B-but I fired a 9x18 out of 9mm once and it didn't explode so it's totally fine!" No, you just got lucky that your utter retardation didn't result in a catastrophic failure. Are you fingers and eyeballs worth risking just so you can be stupid for no actual benefit? I have seen sooo many guns turn into pipe-bombs in people's hands and 99.999% of the time it's because the operator of the firearm did some mongoloid mouthbreather shit. It's simply not worth the risk.
>>65462074>100% wrong. No firearm in the history of firearms headspaces off the extractor.Yeah, excluding the times when you run a cartridge that's literally a few mms shorter in place of the cartridge the firearm was designed for. In this case, it does, you're wrong, and also retarded.IE if you drop a 40S&W cartridge in a 10mm chamber, it will seat on the edge of the case, and the extractor actually won't even engage the rim - the firing pin might not even have enough travel to set the primer off.If you chamber a 40 from a mag, the extractor catches as the bullet is pushed out of the mag (at least in a glock), in which case it is in fact headspacing off the extractor. Whether or not this causes problems eventually it's open to interpretation.t. G29 owner who has fired 40S&W in a factory Glock 10mm barrel with no issues, but probably won't again.
>>65462111This is the rule of thumb if youre a retard yes, like treating all guns as if theyre loaded even if you just watched someone else clear it in front of you and never took your eyes off it
>>65462121"I got blackout drunk and didn't crash my car, thus driving drunk is totally safe." This is your argument.
>>65462129your posts reek of an oriental mindset. you rely on what is "correct" according to "experts" without understanding the fundamental mechanisms of reality. the fact that you gave the example of firing 9x18 out of a 9x19 firearm reveals your ignorance.sometimes it's stupid to fire ammunition out of a gun not marked for it. sometimes it's not. the world is not as black and white as you would like, faggot.
>>65461720>>65461714>It’s never safeBlah blah blah meanwhile I’ve shot around 2000 rounds of .40 through my gen 4 g40 no issues. OP, keep an eye on the extractor because it will accelerate wear, other than that bombs away.
>>65462241
>>65462248It just works!
>>65461880You can run 38 special 357 mag and 357 maximum in a 350 legend if it’s got relief for the rim.. also if it’s a revolver running moonclips you can run 9mm or 380 acp in it but accuracy isn’t as good because you’ve got a lot of travel before the forcing cone for those.. also there’s some less common calibers that headspace off the rim like .445 supermag which can shoot 44 mag and 44 special.. you can also run 44 mag in 444 marlin chambered guns if it has the rim tolerance, but it’ll stretch the 44 mag brass out a bit more…. You can run 223 in a 556…. And the entire family of .327 federal magnum and smaller cartridges…. Plus .500 mag/special, as well as .500 bushwacker if you’ve got that…. And 460/454casull,45 lc, 45scofield, and 45 acp with moon clips work as well as .410 shells in a few odd things.. the caliber families are fun..
>>65462218You don't understand the fundamental mechanisms of modern firearms if you think you can just shove a cartridge into a chamber that's kinda sorta the same size. Why do machinists cut chambers precisely measuring with micrometers and shit if it doesn't actually matter? Just throw the barrel in the lathe and ream out whatever size hole, it doesn't matter in reality, right? Enjoy getting shards of steel surgically removed from your face I guess. Go nuts nigga.
>>65462248>2000 rounds .40And somewhere around a thousand rounds of 10mm since then. I’m sure it makes you mad that I did something the internet said WILL kill you and here I am thriving. This G40 I’ve had for around 4 years and has seen around 6000 rounds 10mm total and 3000 .40 total. Keep hyperventilating loser.>>65462218This guy is right. Use your head instead of relying on guntubers and lawyer ass covering. But some people aren’t competent enough to take risks, so it’s probably best that they refrain.
>>65462345Probably 80% of all self built ARs are incorrectly headspaced and that’s much higher pressure than any pistol cartridge. Keep making hyperbolic categorical statements about issues you don’t understand, it’s the /k/ way.
>>65462345Lol you are an obvious noguns redditor clutching your pearls and 10mm guy reamed your ass
>>65462370WTF are you talking about? AR-15 and AR-10 barrels are headspaced off the barrel extension which is installed at the factory. You actually thought the amount of torque you put on the barrel nut effects the headspace, didn't you? It's a retard-proof design which is literally the only reason they don't explode constantly. If those same idiots tried to build a Rem 700 or something where the amount of torque at the barrel/receiver junction actually mattered, they would be pipe bombing themselves on a daily basis, I guarantee it. You just proved to everyone that you're talking out of your ass.
>>65462427>Barrel extensionWhich interfaces with?>You just proved to everyone that you're talking out of your assYour paragraph rant about barrel nut torque is amusing. I’ve never even heard that misconception before, except from you.
>>65462345accuracy and extraction, i make guns and there is leeway.
>>65462074>Most auto pistol cartridges headspace off the mouth of the caseYes, thus when you put a too short case in there, it either can't headspace at all, or it manages to get what could charitably be described as a headspace, on the extractor. The extractor is all that holds the cartridge in place in such a situation, and that's bad. The pistol isn't supposed to do this and it's probably going to cause problems if you keep doing it.>Just because you can, doesn't mean you shouldI wasn't really advocating for it. The fact that tolerances between these guns and any given make of ammunition vary for whether or not they'll even fit I think is clue enough that you're not supposed to (most of the time, it won't).That said, .38 Super is a .356 caliber cartridge, and loaded faaar lighter, so assuming it fits in the .357 Magnum revolver, there's zero way it could do damage. Likewise, .32 Auto is the same projectile size as .327 Federal Magnum, but .32 Auto would be a complete wet fart of a load for such a revolver.>>65462121Yes, thank you.>>65462129.40 S&W is the EXACT same caliber but much less powerful. Nobody is arguing that it's a good idea to shoot .40 in a 10mm, or that it's even worth trying, but it takes only the simplest of deduction to see what actually could and couldn't happen. The mere fact that 10mm Auto revolvers exist and that they can shoot .40 S&W should very additionally give you a clue as to why it isn't going to fucking kill OP if you did the same thing (but retardedly) in an automatic.
>>65461714A S&W 610 can fire both.
>>65462776I'm not arguing that it can't be done, or that it will immediately blow up your gun and kill you. All I'm saying is that it's dumb and potentially dangerous. One time I accidentally fired a bunch of 3'' 12g shells through a shotgun with a 2-3/4 inch chamber. Nothing happened, it didn't blow up and kill me, it didn't damage the firearm, but it was still incredibly dumb and *could* have ended badly. Like I said before, I have seen many many firearms blown up into pieces and it's damn near always because of pissin hot handloads, or just the complete wrong type of ammo being used. It's just not worth the risk.
>>65462865>*could* have ended badly. Not a fucking hope in hell.
>>65461714if you have a glawk 10mm just get a 40 barrel for it and all your worries are solved. Or, just buy a used glawk 22 for cheap
>>65463057I very specifically do not want a glock as not only are they gay, but glock further demonstrated their gayness by disconuing ALL but 9mmlet models across the board with gen 6
>>65463075Damn fr? I did not know this. That sux tbqht. man who had no intention on buying more handguns
>>65463084The market was captured during covid and now people are clapping like seals as production is wittled down to 1 of each thing to make it easier for jewish litigation to ensue. Gun companies have NEVER been pro gun, they make more way money during restrictions and fear mongering
>>65462783You can get it rechambered longer to fire 10mm magnum and it’ll do all 3
>>65462783>>65463098If you're gonna lug around a giant heavy revolver might as well make it a 357 or a 44
>>6546310810mm magnum is essentially a copy of 41 magnum. It pretty literally splits the performance difference between those two…
>>65463112You're making me wanna buy a fuckhueg impractical revolver. Perhaps I would settle for a plain ol' 357 though
>>65462248
>>65463129That’s the whole point of 41 mag. It isn’t 44 mag fuck huge.. but it fucks more than 357….
>>65461714>Ive got around 300 .40 bullets laying aroundAnything interesting? I shoot .40.
>>65463098>>65463112Be serious 10mm fags, nobody fucking shoots 10mm magnum. It might as well be a wildcat. 41 mag is uncommon and expensive, but it's at least somewhat available.
>>65463194Not super familiar with 10mm Magnum, it's basically 10mm +P+? Like Buffalo Bore tier?
>>65463194Its sadly obscure and it’s a bummer it never caught on… however since most 10mm revolvers can be bored out for it there’s probably gonna continue to be very weird niche for it. >>65463198It’s a physically longer cartridge, think more like 38 special = 40 s/w, 10mm auto = 357 magnum, and 10mm Mag = 357 maximum. Or at least it’s the same kind of relationship.
>>65463187Like 75% plain jane 165 grain fmj's, then a mishmash of loose critical duty bullets and 180 grain ranger t series in ziploc bags
>>65463194Also for what it’s worth my idea of “obscure and uncommon” is skewed and I reload anyway so for a revolver it isn’t out of the question to find a couple hundred 10mmM cases
>>65463181>200 grain 1325 ft/sImagine from a 16" barrel
>>65463098Hell yeah.>>65463194You can shoot 10mm Auto and .40 S&W in a 10mm Magnum revolver like they're specials, however. .40 S&W tends to be resistant to ammo droughts in this day and age.For .44 Magnum, .44 Special still exists, but just about barely, it's not like with .357 Magnum where you can find .38 Special everywhere and it can be cheaper. As for .41 Special? Forget about it.>>65463129Nothing wrong with a big iron, if that's what you really want.If you want a .357 Magnum, there do exist 7 chambered ones, and large frame 8 chambered ones, and that has all of its own appeal.
>>65461714Why not just buy a .40 gun? They are based and have proven nig killing capabilities. And that sound it makes? Glorious.
>>65463224The thing i like about revolvers beyond looking cool is shit as jumping from a giga light load to a giga hot load doesnt matter at all, where an autoloader youll have to change springs and shit. Shooting an 85 grain 800 ft/s .32 s&w long and a 115 grain 1200 ft/s .327 mag back to back is funny to me
>>65463231There are a few .40 taurus guns at my LGS for like $200-300
>>65463198It's a longer and more powerful 10mm, it was made for the AMT Automags and LAR Grizzly pistols back in those days.>>65463216Oh, you mean like actual loose projectiles? Yeah, those are the exact same caliber between .40 and 10mm. HOWEVER, hollowpoints made for .40 S&W will have problems with overexpansion if you drive them at 10mm Auto speeds, and this is a reason that a lot of 10mm ammo has been loaded soft over the years, manufacturers cheating and loading .40 hollowpoints in 10mm cases with maybe 50-100ft/s more velocity at the most. This is why'd you get unscrupulous fucks telling you that "bro, 10mm works better at lower velocities," yeah, if you fucking lie and load .40 hollowpoints in a 10mm case. They don't want to admit that they're selling a lie, that they don't ACTUALLY have real 10mm ammo. So, if you just load any .40 hollow points as plinking ammo for 10mm, it can be alright, but just be aware.
>>65463231Lol, guess Ruger didn't want to write S&W on their guns back then. All steel frame though that shouldn't be a harsh gun to shoot at all. Another good .40 S&W is the H&K USP, as it was designed around it to begin with (which is why the 9mm ones hold up for eternity). Then you have the later FN Hi-Powers in .40
>>65463237Get it anon, get it NOW. You will always have ammo to shoot at clearance prices since every store has it. I don't get why more of you guys don't have .40's they are great.
>>65463248It's genuinely not a bad idea to have a .40 as a reserve pistol for that exact reason.
Though, I should say that SOME .40 pistols are straight up just like 9mm pistols with caliber conversions, some of them are kinda unpleasant to shoot and they beat themselves.
>>65463224One of these days I’m going to find a 6 chambered redhawk in 357 mag and be able to ruin some brass loading it to 357 casull levels…. In the meantime I’m going to enjoy the .445 supermag contender barrel that’s showing up Monday..
>>65463242No like not in a box in mean, not pulled out projectiles, the fmjs are in the boxes still. Like loose cigarettes
>>65463268Oh, well fuck it then, look if you can find an old Ruger or Beretta or something in .40 for a good price, that's really about the only good thing you can use that for, and then keep it as a spare in case there's good sales on more .40
>>65463252>>65463341The P94 is the best .40 ever made. This gun laughs at any kind of .40 I shoot in it. The only other gun close to it I tried is the H&K USP. But this gun you feel almost no recoil and its big, it's makes the .40 shoot soft and accurate. Makes me wonder why Ruger hasn't brought the P series guns back in a 10mm, this gun feels unbreakable and would easily take it. You could pistol whip a future doctor with this and it would knock them out instantly it's so thick.
>>65461880>You can also fit and fire some .38 Super ammunition in some .357 Magnum revolvers.you can but you won't have a working gun afterwards. here is some dude's s&w r8 after he tried shooting several rounds of 38 super through it. when he brought it in the cylinder was locked up because the forcing cone had stripped the copper off the bullet which jammed the cylinder gap.
>>65463231how are the triggers on these? i always assumed they were pretty dogshit desu but i've never shot one before so i can't say
>>65463475How would a .356 caliber bullet do that for a .357 caliber bore?
>>65463462I'm assuming it's because plastic pistols are cheaper to make and have better profit margins, and are more popular. I'd love to see Ruger bring back the metal framed DA/SA ones though, both in 9mm and a new one in 10mm. Make a long-slide P9410 cut for an optic for competing with the Glock 40 as a hunting pistol.
>>65465696The various 9mm and 38s are all .354-.355 bore.It looks like he had very sloppy chambers and the .38 case slid forward and pressure cut it at the gap.
>>65465842no, like I said when the guy brought the gun in the cylinder was locked up by a stripped jacket that was bridging the forcing cone and the cylinder. I managed to force the cylinder open and found 2 or 3 fired cartridges and then the last one that it got stuck on. there was no lead obstructing the barrel, but a bunch of copper, and the first inch or so of rifling was totally fucked up. the gun had to go back to s&w for a barrel replacement. I have no idea how it happened but based on this I definitely wouldn't try it.
>>65466019Something more must have happened for there to have been outright fucking jacket separation.
>>65466019That's not a bullet jacket in your pic. What's in the forcing cone is obviously the same alloy as the case and not the jackets.
>>65466069none of the empty cases looked damaged. here's the other image I have saved from that time. you can see 5 unfired cartridges, 2 fired but otherwise undamaged looking ones, and the third with a 38 super headstamp, although looking at it now it was +p apparently.
>>65466183any bulging on the primers of the fired ones? i agree with the other anon that it looks more like case than jacket in your first pic, but if you've got all three fired cases and they're the same length as the cases on the unfired ones it can't be anything but jacket.
>>65466183All .38 Super cases are stamped +P to further hammer home how they aren't safe to load in some of the really old .38 ACP pistols. It's an odd legacy thing, because there's probably a few hundred thousand 1911 pistols in .38 Super in existence at the least by the year 2026, while the actual old Colt 1902 and and Colt 1903 Pocket Hammer pistols (which were originally loaded for .38 Super pressures, before they realized they couldn't quite deal with that and thus downloaded .38 ACP by like 200ft/s), are comparatively rare and not very easy to find.
>>65466233The idea of a 2011 in .38 super intrigues me for some retarded reason, or rather a 1911a2 not a 2011 and built for very hot loads of it. I wonder if theres still 9x25 dillon 1911 barrels floating around to fit for a 10mm ria 1911a2 for giga hot loads from a 6" barrel, just for maximum retardation
>>65466245https://www.ebay.com/itm/264487605308
>>65466245I'd love a fully rimless .38 Super, along with a Commander length 1911 with an aluminum double-stack frame.
