What is a good self defense rifle that isn't an Assault Rifle? Hello /k/ a friend of mine told me I should come here for advice on firearms and home defense. I recently moved to Houston, TX from NYC, and while I love my new home, it isn't in the best area. I'm living alone and I think I need something to defend myself for the first time ever. I am very new to guns and I don't even like guns, but unfortunately my neighborhood demands it and I have a lot of valuables in my home. I don't want an assault weapon because I don't want to be a hypocrite about them (they shouldn't be legal but that's another story. I don't need a weapon of war, just something nice to defend my home and my belongings. Ideally it should be: 1. Large enough to serve as a deterrent so I don't have to use it 2. Legal (so again, no machine guns) 3. Something that can be non lethal if I shoot an intruder in the leg. Thank you!

Assuming you aren't a troll OP, please explain to us what features make a gun an "assault weapon".In terms of recommendations based on what you've posted, I would say a 12 gauge pump shotgun. There is a variety of ammunition types you can use with them, including some marketed as "non-lethal"; However I would highly recommend you take some kind of first-time gun owners course so you can better familiarize yourself with weapons and the laws and moralities regarding them.

An AR is the most effective tool for that that you as a civilian can reasonably acquire. Hoodrats will have full auto glocks and other assault weapons and they will be much less hesitant to use them on you.Furthermore, using a firearm in self-defense is lethal, full stop. You as a novice will never be good enough at shooting to ensure you don't shoot someone in a fatal area. "I'll shoot them in the leg!" And you hit their femoral artery and they bleed out in a matter of minutes. You have to have a mindset that if you shoot at someone with a gun, you are going to kill them. Hell, I know a guy who hit a home invading crackhead in the chest with a baseball bat only once and that stopped the crackhead's heart and he died. If you can't accept the mindset that shooting someone will kill them, don't buy a gun for self defense. If you can accept that mindset, then magdump into their chest because it's your best chance of cleanly hitting your target and not having your bullets miss and hit the stuff behind him. And a 5.56 bullet hitting a target in the chest will tumble and lose energy, reducing overpenetration. If an AR is still too distasteful, consider something like a Ruger Mini-14 or an SKS.
